Honda has invested in advanced bi-directional charging technology at its European R&D site in Offenbach, Germany, which is helping to balance demand and store energy more efficiently across the facility.

The new charging system incorporates renewable energy generation and is a test bed for hardware that will be available to private households in the future.

The technology installation in Germany follows the debut of the domestic Honda Power Manager Concept at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The concept previewed a fully integrated energy transfer, which takes power from the grid and can return stored energy from electric vehicle (EV) batteries – through ‘Vehicle-to-Grid’ or ‘V2G’ technology. This latest trial installation at Honda’s Offenbach site applies the same principles on a larger scale.

Through bi-directional energy transfer, electricity is drawn from the grid or is generated by photovoltaic solar panels and is used to charge EVs plugged in to the system. While an EV is plugged in, the energy held in its battery can be transferred back to help stabilise the grid at times of short or surplus supply.

Jörg Böttcher, Vice President of Honda R&D Europe, said: “With the installation of the latest bi-directional charging technology at our R&D site in Germany, we are adding the next technology to our Smart Company project, which will further enhance our research activity in the field of zero-emission society and future mobility.”

With the help of the bi-directional hardware and with the technology of The Mobility House*, Honda aims to optimise energy management at its European R&D campus, maximising the use of renewable solar power in particular. The project is testing the interaction, compatibility and power flow between specific electrical components, including the renewable energy cells and the EV batteries. The installation represents a collaboration between Honda R&D Europe, energy service provider The Mobility House and Swiss technology company EVTEC.

The investment in the bi-directional energy transfer technology further enhances the world’s most advanced public charging station for plug-in vehicles, which was launched at Honda R&D Europe in summer 2017. Its state-of-the-art 940V capability can deliver up to 150kW of energy, enabling as many as four vehicles to charge simultaneously with different types of connectors. Since its installation in June, the EV charging station has supplied power for 447 charge sessions and has saved 3.87 tonnes of CO2.

EXTERIOR: A FRESH NEW LOOK

The Mahindra PikUp’s clean, contemporary lines improve the look of the vehicle while maintaining a tough signature stance. The most compelling changes are to the front of the vehicle where the grille, headlights, bonnet and foglamps have all undergone a substantial redesign.

The new grille design is smarter, utilising a glossy black finish with subtle chrome accents (S10 Models), as well as a more prominent Mahindra badge, while the lower air intake has been reshaped to provide a stronger visual integration with the grille. Black mesh inserts are consistently applied to both the main grille and the lower air intake, creating a more consistent appearance.

The headlights on either side of the grille are also completely new, with a cleaner, more resolute appearance and a new curved LED Daytime Running Light signature for the S10 Double Cab. Bolder fog lamps are mounted in restyled apertures that are linked to the lower edge of the headlights. The redesigned front-end styling is accompanied by static bending projection lamps.

INTERIOR: THE NEW AGE STYLE

The spacious cabin of the Next Generation PikUp has undergone important upgrades as part of the model line-up. Perhaps the most obvious improvements are to the upholstery and the six-inch (6”), full colour touch screen display on the S10 Double Cab models located in the centre console.

The Mahindra PikUp’s cabin is also comprehensively equipped. As the flagship model of the range, the S10 Double Cab benefits from useful features such as remote central locking, cruise control, satellite navigation, reversing camera and a multifunction steering wheel.

The upgrade doesn’t end here. With smart features like auto wipers and intelligent headlamps the vehicle promises to take the customer experience to the next level of comfort and performance. Fully Automatic Climate Control further enhances the comfort of occupants in the S10 variants.

DRIVETRAIN: POWER AND EFFICIENCY

The Next Generation PikUp has an updated 2.2- litre four-cylinder mHawk turbodiesel engine which makes use of a variable geometry turbocharger to produce 103kw. The impressive torque peak of 330 Nm is reached at just 1,600rpm, and sustained to 2,800 rpm, ensuring excellent in-gear acceleration and great towing power.

The turbodiesel engine is linked to a six-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels, with 4×4 transmission with low range. The entire range of the Next Generation Mahindra PikUp is fitted with an Eaton MLD (Mechanical Locking Differential) as standard.

The all-new Holden Equinox, Australia’s most user-friendly SUV, has been put to the test by Australia’s motoring experts ahead of going on sale and bolstering Holden’s growing SUV line-up. Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Mark Bernhard said, with the all-new Equinox, Holden is responding to changing Australian buyer habits while delivering all the high-tech features and exceptional vehicle dynamics Holden has built its name on.

Available at Holden dealers from early December, Equinox launches with two standout turbo-petrol engines (diesel to launch in 2018). With exceptional leading fuel economy, the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol with six-speed manual/auto uses just 6.9L/100km while offering 127kW power and 275Nm torque.

For drivers that want a little more oomph, there’s the stunning, class-leading 2.0-litre turbo-petrol with 9-speed auto, capable of producing 188kW and 353Nm – enough to propel Equinox to 100kph in just over seven seconds.

Equinox’s impressive performance is also underpinned by an adaptive All-Wheel-Drive system† that provides incredible stability, traction and handling. The advanced system uses both pre-emptive and feedback control to precisely control the amount of torque going to the rear wheels, delivered through an electro-hydraulic clutch pack mounted to the rear differential. Monitoring vehicle speeds and throttle position amongst other things, the system can predict the exact amount of torque that is required, ultimately providing the driver with confident handling to provide peace of mind.

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) has announced that the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has awarded the all-new Eclipse Cross SUV Coupe the highest 5-star safety rating. The ANCAP revealed that the Eclipse Cross achieved a 97 per cent rating for Adult Occupant Protection and an 80 per cent Pedestrian Protection rating.

The new SUV Coupe’s ‘Forward Collision Mitigation’ system performed well, with collisions avoided or mitigated in all test scenarios and at all test speeds. Overall, the Eclipse Cross scored maximum points in many of the tests performed, helping the vehicle to secure the highest safety rating possible.

This 5-star ANCAP safety rating will apply to all variants of the Eclipse Cross SUV. MMC began shipment of the new Eclipse Cross compact SUV to Australia already with sales will commencing this month.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia has announced its all-new Eclipse Cross SUV Coupe will go on sale from December 22nd.

The all-new Eclipse Cross, the first of a new generation of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation cars will join the brands current lineup of SUVs: the ASX compact SUV and the Outlander and Outlander PHEV mid-size SUVs. Combining the spaciousness and versatility of a mid-size SUV, Eclipse Cross is capable and desirable thanks to sharp exterior design, engaging driving characteristics, appealing interior, advanced technologies and safety features.

All versions of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will be powered by an all-new direct injection turbocharged petrol engine developing 110kW of power and 250Nm of torque matched to an advanced new automatic transmission with Sport mode, manual override and paddle shifters. The new transmission benefits from the latest step logic technology to combine the packaging and running cost benefits of a CVT with the smoothness and responsiveness of a traditional automatic.

The Eclipse Cross will be available with two or four-wheel drive, the latter incorporating the latest generation of Mitsubishi’s Super All-wheel Control (S-AWC) system that offers a choice of three advanced drive modes – Auto, Snow and Gravel.

The cockpit-style driving environment in the Eclipse Cross reinforces its focus on driving pleasure and the spaciousness of the cabin is further enhanced by slide-and-recline adjustment for the 60:40 split rear seat on all models. To optimise loading capability, passenger comfort and to facilitate loads of various sizes and shapes, the rear seat back has eight different recline settings and the base has up to 200mm of travel.

The Eclipse Cross protects its occupants, other drivers and pedestrians with a comprehensive array of active and passive safety features and systems which have ensured the vehicle attained a 5 star safety rating in Euro NCAP testing.

Styling of the new Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, which was inspired by and evolved from the Mitsubishi XR PHEV II Concept car, incorporates its dynamic contours and wedge-shaped beltline, resulting in a dynamic SUV coupé-like shape with a tapered roofline, short overhangs and muscular front and rear fenders. The deeply sculptured upper and lower side character lines are also carried over from the XR PHEV II Concept.

Mitsubishi’s brand identity is strong, integrating the Dynamic Shield grille, with fog lamps and indicators set lower within striking bumper recesses, while the LED headlights and daytime running lights are located in the main headlamp assembly. The detailing, such as the mesh upper grille, subtly contributes to the sporty visual character of the car.

In addition to its more stylish design, the Eclipse Cross also represents a significant enhancement of the perceived quality of Mitsubishi Motors products, with materials, textures, colours and trim more consistent with the concept of fine Japanese craftsmanship and arranged such that they contrast and complement each other perfectly.

The Eclipse Cross features a new dashboard architecture that uses a horizontal axis design. The logical layout also works to visually widen the interior, while the tall centre console helps create a cockpit-like environment to further enhance the dynamic driving experience.

The Eclipse Cross is finished with high-quality trims to create a stylish and crafted feel throughout the cabin. Carbon and piano black accents are used for the instrument panel, steering wheel, centre console and door panels, while high finish silver trim frames the lower dash, centre console, front door armrests and air vents. Mitsubishi’s latest model also benefits from all-new front seats featuring body-hugging side bolsters, optimised foam density and thicker cushioning.

Within its compact dimensions (2,670 mm wheelbase, 1,805 mm overall width and overall length of 4,405 mm), the Eclipse Cross offers an airy and spacious interior. Luggage space is optimised with a 60:40 split rear seat, with slide-and-recline adjustments, which provides rear occupants with plenty of legroom (200 mm sliding range) while also allowing occupants to adopt their favourite seatback position (16-32° via eight reclining steps).

Adding to the overall roominess, the clever twin bubble roof design ensures plenty of headroom, a benefit which isn’t compromised if the car is equipped with the panoramic glass roof. Other features that aid practicality and comfort are wide opening rear doors (75°), multiple storage areas including a large double-compartment glovebox, centre console with sunglass tray, underfloor cargo box and new ‘Sync’ function for the air conditioning to synchronise the left and right temperature.

Audio

Mitsubishi’s Smartphone link Display Audio (SDA) enables compatible smartphone connectivity through Android Auto and Apple Car Play systems. Users can connect to selected apps, including navigation, stored on their smartphone through the system’s 7-inch colour touch screen or via voice control. The system also allows users to make calls or send SMS messages hands free. SDA is a standard feature on all Eclipse Cross models.

The SDA system is combined with a new Touchpad Controller, which allows for a more intuitive operation of the infotainment system. Placing the Touchpad Controller in the centre console allows the driver to operate the SDA system easily and without having to shift seating position. (Note: The Touchpad Controller is not compatible with Android Auto)

Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB+) is standard on all variants of Eclipse Cross, along with traditional AM/FM tuner.

A Mazda Premium Path Forward

The 2016 Mazda CX-9 three-row large SUV was a remarkable step for Mazda. It once again elevated Mazda, showing if Mazda built an SUV with superior driving dynamics, class-above refinement, an abundance of amenities, technology and a strong engine, customers would come. After more than a year since going on sale, approximately 61 per cent of all Mazda CX-9s sold in Australia have been either high-grade GT models or top-trim Azami models. In fact, so great is the appeal of the Azami, it has resulted in 40 per cent more retails than expected.

It was natural, then, that Mazda would follow this plan with its flagship sedan. Mazda6 has received improvements every year it has been on sale. Updates for the previous model year added more sound insulation throughout its cabin and Nappa leather interior appointments. Mazda6 also received standard G-Vectoring Control, a Mazda-exclusive technology that makes steering response more direct and linear by using a minute reduction of engine torque at turn-in to put extra weight on the front tires.

But simply adding Nappa leather and some new technologies does not a flagship model make.

Thus, Mazda6’s chassis has also been thoroughly revised to provide a more supple ride, greater agility and dramatically improved NVH. Mazda6’s Atenza interior features authentic Japanese materials that evoke a sense of classic Japanese design. The colour of its brown Nappa leather seats was inspired by the aged wood in ancient Japanese temples, the UltraSuede® NU trim has a subtle gold tint, using a similar technique to that which is used to make ornate kimonos, and Sen wood, a type of wood often used in taiko drums and Japanese furniture, is used to accent the cabin and enhance the premium feel.

Perhaps the greatest upgrade of Mazda6 Atenza is its source of motivation. Mazda’s award-winning, SKYACTIV-G 2.5T petrol turbo engine returns for its second application. The SKYACTIV-G 2.5T is an engine renowned for its nearly instantaneous, ample torque, courtesy of its Dynamic Pressure Turbo, which accelerates exhaust gasses through a tiny inlet to quickly spool up its turbocharger at low RPM before opening a larger secondary passage to use throughout the engine’s operational range. The engine produces torque on par with a 4.0-litre V-8 engine. Mazda6 was already a class favorite among discerning drivers. These latest upgrades will launch Mazda6 above the mainstream sedan fray, changing the idea of what an affordable midsize sedan can and should be.

‘Mature Elegance’: A Design Vision

Mazda’s striking VISION COUPE concept that debuted at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show portended a revitalised focus on elegance. Mazda6 carries a similar theme, called “Mature Elegance,” creating an added level of sophistication to Mazda’s KODO—Soul of Motion design language that complements its aspirational ambitions.

Up front is Mazda6’s new grille, which accentuates a look of depth, with a strong framework, low centre of gravity and wide stance. Its standard LED headlights integrate fog lamps and carry a crisp, wide lighting signature. Painted surfaces extend lower on the body, and new 17- and 19-inch wheel designs complement the upgraded appearance. Finally, Soul Red Crystal paint makes its debut on Mazda’s sedan, joining Machine Grey Metallic and a full palette of available paint colours.

Inside, the interior is all-new, with only the steering wheel and small trim pieces carried over from its predecessor. Most noticeable is its horizontally stretched dashboard that accentuates Mazda6’s width and belies a sense of subtle sophistication. On Mazda6 Atenza models, Sen wood, Nappa leather and UltraSuede® NU adorn the doors, seats and dashboard, providing an atmosphere that can coddle on any High St just as easily as it can enliven spirited drives along the Great Ocean Rd.

Technology Aplenty

Lest one thinks the new Mazda6 hasn’t received the technology to match its upscale interior, there’s more in store. 

Mazda6’s front seats have been fully redesigned. They are wider, with high-density, vibration-absorbing urethane foam that creates a firm, supportive seating surface. Yet, they’re supple enough to keep the driver and passengers comfortable for long trips. Introducing next-generation seat materials and concepts, first seen at August 2017’s Mazda Frankfurt Technology Forum, Mazda6’s seats are designed to help keep front passengers’ spines in the natural S-shape humans use when standing. 

Ventilated front seats in Mazda6 Atenza are a first for the brand, and wick away warm air from the front passenger and driver’s backs to keep them cool. Rear seats have also been redesigned with high-density urethane foam, enabling greater comfort.

Engines to Suit Customers’ Tastes

Mazda6 offers three powertrain options in Australia, starting with the torquey, fuel-efficient SKYACTIV-G 2.5 naturally aspirated engine. Mazda6’s 2.5-litre, four-cylinder engine comes with a host of upgrades to reduce internal friction and improve efficiency across all RPM, and it adds a greater level of refinement. 

Cylinder deactivation in a four-cylinder engine, enables the outside two cylinders to shut down when the vehicle is operating at steady speeds between 40 and 80 km/h, but all four cylinders work instantaneously when needed for maximum performance. A centrifugal pendulum has been adopted in the torque converter of the six-speed SKYACTIV-DRIVE automatic transmission, counterbalancing any vibration that might otherwise be felt when running on two cylinders. The result is an imperceptible switchover between two and four-cylinder modes, yet with very tangible efficiency benefits.

GT and Atenza models will feature Mazda’s award-winning turbocharged SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine as standard. First available in the current-generation Mazda CX-9 large SUV, the SKYACTIV-G 2.5T is a technological tour de force that produces 420Nm of torque from just 2,000 RPM and 170 kW on 91-RON fuel. 

Mazda’s industry-first Dynamic Pressure Turbo builds boost nearly instantaneously by using a small inlet port to force air into its turbocharger, akin to how water velocity increases when one holds his or her thumb over a hose. From there, a secondary valve can open up at higher RPM for increased airflow and maximum horsepower. A pulse-scavenging 4-3-1 manifold that prevents exhaust backpressure and helps the engine breathe freely.

Cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is used to reduce combustion temperatures, preventing knocking and therefore reducing the need for fuel-enrichment (when extra fuel is dumped into the cylinders as a means to cool the engine). 

In too many instances, turbocharged engines are mated to continuously variable automatic transmissions (CVT), operating in a narrow band of efficiency, sacrificing a connectedness between driver and car—a valued characteristic of all Mazda vehicles called Jinba Ittai. Mazda’s six-speed SKYACTIV-DRIVE automatic transmission, paired as standard to the SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine, keeps its torque converter locked through most of its operation, giving a more connected sense of controllability than many other automatic transmissions.

Finally the 2.2L SKYACTIV-D diesel engine will continue to be available as an option on Touring grade and up.

All three engines complement Mazda6, with the naturally aspirated petrol engine serving as an all-around efficient, responsive powertrain, its turbocharged sibling amplifying the driving performance for which Mazdas are known and diesel offering effortless and efficient long-distance driving.

But What’s an Engine without a Chassis?

In this latest round of thoughtful improvements, engineers have revisited every aspect of Mazda6’s chassis, with its suspension offering a smoother, more linear ride quality and greater NVH refinement similar to the ultra-quiet CX-9. Its steering rack is now rigid-mounted to the chassis, offering greater steering response and feel, and its SKYACTIV-CHASSIS has been stiffened in complement with the revised suspension to offer both a smoother ride and to improve outright dynamic performance.

Enabling this more comfortable ride without compromising the Mazda6’s handling, the suspension geometry has been revised, with roll-steer changes that promote more neutral handling. The steering rack also is now rigid-mounted to the chassis, offering more direct steering response.

Additionally, body reinforcements, thicker sheet metal in the rear wheel-wells, reinforced chassis bracing and even thicker suspension trailing link mounts help improve interior conversation sound quality, putting Mazda6 into rarified air when it comes to quietness, refinement and capabilities.

In Pursuit of Mazda Premium

In pursuit of Mazda Premium, an engine isn’t enough. A chassis isn’t enough. An elegant interior and world-renowned design aren’t enough. Refinement and technology aren’t enough. But together, they complete what Mazda expects to be yet another step to elevate the brand beyond the realm of mainstream vehicles, offering a “Mazda Premium” experience that will delight customers. 

As with its predecessor, the new Mazda6 will land among the world’s best cars, for those who love to drive. But it will aim higher, moving Mazda’s consideration with customers to a new, class-above place, because Mazda never stops challenging. New Mazda6 is expected to go on sale in Australia towards the second half of 2018.

Another intoxicating chapter is about to be written in the success story of the BMW i8, as the updated version of the 2+2-seater – the world’s highest- selling plug-in hybrid sports car since its launch in 2014 – is joined by the new BMW i8 Roadster in the line-up. The open-top two-seater with electrically operated soft-top adds a whole new sensation of freedom to the combination of locally emission-free mobility and high-calibre performance. It opens the door to virtually silent motoring with zero CO2 emissions, bringing an extra edge of purity to the experience of open-top Sheer Driving Pleasure.

Like the new BMW i8 Coupe, the new BMW i8 Roadster is based on the LifeDrive vehicle architecture with aluminium chassis and carbon-fibre- reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell. The further optimised BMW eDrive technology employed in both models comprises a high-voltage battery with significantly expanded cell capacity and energy content, and an electric motor generating a higher peak output. The result is a noticeable increase in dynamic performance, operating range and the amount of driving possible using purely the electric drive system.

The proportions, lines and surface design mark out both the BMW i8 Coupe and BMW i8 Roadster as belonging to a new breed of sports car. On an individual level, the BMW i8 Coupe stands out as an extremely sporty 2+2 seater, while the BMW i8 Roadster oozes all the freedom of open-top motoring for two. The two models sport “Coupe” or “Roadster” lettering respectively on their C-pillars. The choice of exterior paint finishes now includes the new E-Copper metallic and Donington Grey metallic shades.

The BMW i8 Roadster: emotion-packed design, a character all of its own

The BMW i8 Roadster carries over the BMW i design language into another vehicle concept, and is awash with individual highlights that radiate elegance and fire the emotions. The soft-top roof has a visual lightness to go with its low physical weight and serves as a defining element of the silhouette in reinforcing the road-hugging impression made by the car’s low centre of gravity. The body’s dynamic wedge shape can also be best appreciated when viewing the two-seater in profile.

When opened, the BMW i8 Roadster’s broad roof retracts fully into the rear end. A unique mechanism allows the soft-top to be folded into a compact package and stowed away in a perpendicular position, creating around 100 litres of additional storage space behind the seats. The all-electric roof opens and closes very quietly in 15 seconds, a process which can be initiated while travelling at up to 50 km/h. Dropping down the roof raises the rear window by around 30 millimetres into a comfort position, where it can serve as a draught stop.

Innovative lightweight design cuts the roadster weight penalty. The familiar lightweight design measures used for previous BMW i models have been meticulously adapted to the specific requirements of the i8 Roadster. The open-top two-seater comes with newly designed frameless gullwing doors made from CFRP with an aluminium outer shell, while the windscreen frame is made entirely from CFRP. This ultra-strong high-tech material is ideally equipped to provide exceptional rigidity, maximising the car’s occupant protection even if it rolls over.

CFRP is also used to manufacture the side skirts with their extra-large cross- section. Additional struts and panels in the front and rear axles also help to maximise the body’s rigidity. The unladen weight of the new BMW i8 Roadster stands at 1,595 kilograms, meaning the design’s inherent weight penalty vis-à-vis the Coupe is limited to around 60 kilograms, a remarkably low figure for an open-top car.

Optimised BMW eDrive technology: more power, longer range, a further enhanced electric driving experience

Rigorously further developed BMW eDrive technology and the optimised operating strategy of the intelligent energy management lead to a significant increase in the number of driving situations where the electric motor can be solely responsible for powering the car. This underscores the ground- breaking character of the new BMW i8 Coupe and ensures that drivers of the new BMW i8 Roadster can enjoy silent and locally emission-free open-top motoring to the full.

Underpinning this new level of electric driving experience is an updated version of the lithium-ion battery developed for the BMW i8. The high-voltage unit is located centrally in the car’s underbody. Its cell capacity is up from 20 to 34 Ah and gross energy capacity rises from 7.1 to 11.6 kWh (net: 9.4 kWh). All of which means the electric motor has more energy at its disposal. The cell configuration allows a 9 kW/12 hp increase in peak output to 105 kW/143 hp, lacing quick sprints on pure-electric power with an even more vivid streak of dynamism.

In the standard driving mode, the new BMW i8 Coupe and new BMW i8 Roadster can be driven exclusively on the electric motor alone – from step-off to a speed of 105 km/h, which is up from 70 km/h in the original i8. The combustion engine is only brought into play at higher speeds or when the driver stamps down hard on the accelerator, and is switched off again far more frequently when a measured driving style is maintained. Pressing the eDrive button allows both models to travel at up to 120 km/h on electric power alone. The electric range of the new BMW i8 Coupe in the NEDC test cycle has increased to 55 kilometres (34 miles)* and the new BMW i8 Roadster posts a figure of 53 kilometres (33 miles)*.

Engine with optimised emissions

The internal combustion engine has also undergone further optimisation to ready it for the new BMW i8 Coupe and new BMW i8 Roadster. The three- cylinder unit extracts maximum output of 170 kW/231 hp from its displacement of just 1.5 litres, along with peak torque of 320 Nm (236 lb-ft). In the process, it generates an even sportier soundtrack. A particulate filter is now fitted to further reduce emissions by absorbing the particulate matter contained in the exhaust gases.

The system output produced by the electric motor and engine acting in unison is now 275 kW/374 hp. The new BMW i8 Coupe accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.4 seconds, while the new BMW i8 Roadster takes a tick longer with a time of 4.6 seconds. Both models have an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. Combined fuel consumption, as calculated in the EU test cycle for plug-in hybrid vehicles, stands at 1.9 litres per 100 kilometres * for the BMW i8 Coupe and 2.1 litres per 100 kilometres * for the BMW i8 Roadster, plus 14.0 kWh and 14.5 kWh of electrical energy respectively per 100 kilometres*. Petrol CO2 emissions come in at 42 grams per kilometre* for the BMW i8 Coupe and 46 grams per kilometre* for the BMW i8 Roadster.

Hybrid-specific all-wheel drive, precision-tuned chassis

The electric motor’s power is transmitted to the front wheels and the engine’s drive to the rear wheels, resulting in a hybrid-specific all-wheel-drive system that is controlled by the car’s intelligent energy management. In hybrid mode, the electric motor provides a power boost to assist the engine when the driver is accelerating with particular vigour. It is also able to recuperate energy and feed it to the high-voltage battery on the overrun and under braking. The petrol engine’s high-voltage starter-generator can likewise generate additional reserves of electricity, thereby ensuring sufficient energy is on tap at all times for the electric drive system in the new BMW i8 Coupe and new BMW i8 Roadster.

When the navigation system’s route guidance function is activated, the intelligent energy management ensures the electric motor is employed as extensively as possible and as judiciously as possible from an efficiency point of view. The system analyses the route in full and sets up the powertrain management to run on purely electric power, particularly over low-speed sections of the journey.

The model-specific tuning of the suspension and damping systems, the specially configured steering characteristics, a firmer roll stabilisation set-up and targeted modification of the DSC parameters together guarantee that the new BMW i8 Roadster retains all of the plug-in hybrid sports car’s trademark handling and performance qualities. Dynamic Damper Control is included as standard on both models. The standard 20-inch light-alloy wheels fitted to the new BMW i8 Roadster feature a lightweight construction and each weigh around one kilogram less than the lightest wheels previously offered for the BMW i8.

Exclusive equipment with innovative style

The new BMW i8 Coupe and new BMW i8 Roadster come with Carpo interior trim as standard, comprising full-leather upholstery in Ivory White for the Coupe and Ivory White/Black for the Roadster. As well as Halo interior trim, the list of optional extras also includes new Accaro interior trim with an Amido/E-Copper colour scheme. Standard specification also includes features such as a leather sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons and shift paddles, electrically adjustable and heated seats, the multifunctional instrument display, the Driving Assistant including Surround View, the BMW Display Key and the Navigation system Professional. The main menu in the Control Display is now presented in the form of horizontally arranged tiles with a live mode.

The equipment options available include a model-specific BMW Head-Up Display, the non-dazzling BMW Laserlight with BMW Selective Beam and acoustic pedestrian warning.

Seamless connectivity with BMW Connected and ConnectedDrive

ConnectedDrive Services are also included as standard, providing access to functions such as Real Time Traffic Information and On-Street Parking Information, as well as Concierge Services. The BMW Connected personal mobility assistant interfaces the vehicle with the customer’s selected touchpoints, such as a smartphone or smartwatch, via the flexible Open Mobility Cloud platform.

Numerous products and services offered as part of the 360° ELECTRIC portfolio are designed to help make electric mobility in the new BMW i8 Coupe and new BMW i8 Roadster a convenient and practical experience in everyday life. Both models are supplied with a mode 2 charging cable as standard that enables the high-voltage battery to be recharged from a standard domestic socket in under four-and-a-half hours. Hooking the vehicle up to a BMW i Wallbox allows charging to be performed at a rate of up to 3.6 kW and completed in under three hours. The BMW i Wallbox Connect makes it possible to utilise the globally unique BMW Digital Charging Service – the key to intelligent charging which either optimises cost efficiency or ensures preferential use of self-generated solar power.

All figures relating to performance, consumption, emissions and range are provisional

*The fuel consumption, CO2 emissions, power consumption and operating range figures were determined according to the European Regulation (EC) 715/2007 in the version applicable. New mid-sized SUV, the BMW X3, enters the Australian and New Zealand markets with a 5 star ANCAP safety rating.

“The new BMW X3 offers high levels of safety for all members of the family,” said ANCAP Chief Executive, James Goodwin. Credible scores were achieved in the areas of Adult Occupant Protection (93 per cent), Child Occupant Protection (84 per cent) and Pedestrian Protection (70 per cent) with ‘Good’ or ‘Acceptable’ injury risk ratings recorded for the majority of critical body regions. ‘Marginal’ levels of protection were recorded for the chest of the rear passenger in the full width test and the chest of the driver in the pole test.

“The X3 is also well-specified with active safety technologies offering a slightly higher standard safety specification than the X3 offered in Europe. Lane departure warning and intelligent speed assistance systems are offered as standard inclusions on Australian and New Zealand models,” Goodwin said.

“It is encouraging to see standard safety inclusions being prioritised for our market,” Goodwin added. This 5 star ANCAP safety rating currently applies to xDrive20d variants only.

Los Angeles. MINI’s appearance at the Los Angeles Auto Show 2017 will focus on the diversity of its current model programme as well as its vision of future driving fun, so typical of the MINI brand.

The highlight of the show will be the US premiere of the MINI Electric Concept. The British premium brand’s concept vehicle is the precursor to emission-free mobility, MINI-style. The MINI-typical go-kart feeling takes on a whole new level thanks to the purely electric drivetrain.

From 1 – 10 December 2017 MINI will also be presenting its entire spectrum of models to visitors of the LA Auto show. The new, limited Ice Blue Edition, which has been produced especially for the US market, will also be on display.

For 15 years now MINI has been consistently exciting a growing fan base with efficient driving fun, distinctive design and individual style. MINI Electric Concept: Urban Driving Fun with zero-emissions.

MINI has once again chosen the Los Angeles Auto Show to stage its vision of future mobility MINI-style with the US premiere of the MINI Electric Concept.

In November 2008 the International Auto Show in California became showcase for the world premiere of the MINI E. For the first time ever the British premium automotive producer presented a purely electrically- driven vehicle, based on the predecessor of the current MINI Hardtop 2 door.

The MINI E was originally produced as a small series of 600 electric vehicles and was field-tested in real, everyday driving situations. The BMW Group incorporated the knowledge drawn from this trial into the development of the BMW i3 among other vehicles.

Electro-mobility MINI-style – to be experienced on the road soon

The design and vehicle concept of the MINI Electric Concept illustrate perfectly how electric mobility in the urban environment can enrich the distinctive charm, individuality and driving experience of a MINI. The MINI E’s powerful electric engine excites with quick reactions at the touch of the accelerator. Its energy is derived from a lithium-ion battery. MINI-typical agility as well as maximum range is, therefore, ensured when driving emission-free.

The MINI Electric Concept epitomizes a distinctive form of electro- mobility which will soon be experienced in every day driving. The BMW Group has already announced the development of a purely electrically driven MINI series vehicle. The first of these large-scale produced MINIs with battery-electric drivetrains will be available from 2019 – exactly 60 years after the launch of the classic Mini.

This model ensures electro-mobility is a MINI-typical experience of driving fun, style and individuality. The electric drivetrain will be built at the BMW Group’s e-mobility centre at Plants Dingolfing and Landshut in Bavaria before being integrated into the car at Plant Oxford, which is the main production location for the MINI 3 door model.

Forerunner for electric driving fun: The MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4.

The MINI Electric Concept will be presented side-by-side with the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4. The British brand’s first Plug-in-Hybrid model is already paving the way for pure electric driving fun.

The MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 is an all-rounder with a difference. With five seats, a generous boot and numerous mod cons it ensures on-brand driving fun, either side of the city boundaries. Its power is derived from a combustion engine and an electric motor, which combined reach a system performance of 221hp. In pure electric mode the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 reaches a top speed of 78mph, ensuring a large part of the daily driving can be completed emission free.

When an increase in performance is required the combustion engine is activated.
