Kia Motors has won two 2016 GOOD DESIGN awards, for the Telluride Concept and the production Cadenza sedan, in the program’s ‘Transportation’ category.

This is the seventh consecutive year in which the Korean manufacturer has received GOOD DESIGN awards, which are organized annually by The Chicago Athenaeum. Previous Kia winners include the 2014 GT4 Stinger concept car, the Soul EV, and the 2016 Sorento SUV. Both the first generation and current generation Cadenza premium sedan have now been recognized by the GOOD DESIGN awards.

The GOOD DESIGN jury – comprising independent design professionals, industry specialists and design media – evaluated entrants on a range of criteria, which included innovative design, new technologies, form, materials, construction, concept, function, utility, energy efficiency, and sensitivity to the environment. Kia’s Telluride Concept and all-new Cadenza impressed judges in all areas.

The GOOD DESIGN awards this year marked its 66th anniversary, making it one of the oldest and most influential design awards programs anywhere in the world. Established in 1950 and organized annually by The Chicago Athenaeum, the GOOD DESIGN awards program celebrates the most innovative and contemporary designs from around 50 nations each year. In previous years the jury has honored products and designs from a wide range of industries, including the latest jet airliners, space craft, and even the paperclip.

Four-time WRC World Champion Sebastien Ogier to drive for M-Sport in 2017. Having tested the brand new Ecoboost-powered Ford Fiesta in Wales last month, the Frenchman was sufficiently impressed to agree terms with the Cumbrian team.

Ogier and co-driver Julien Ingrassia were free agents having dominated the last four years in the all conquering Volkswagen Polo before the manufacturer ended its commitment to the sport. The pair are a force to be reckoned with and since starting their WRC assault in 2008, have secured four world championships, 38 victories, 56 podiums and an impressive 475 stage wins.

Ogier will lead the M-Sport team with Estonian 2016 Driver of the Year, Ott Tänak, and with just 39 days until the start of the Rallye Monte-Carlo, the defending champion cannot wait to get going.

“There will be a lot of new things this season, but I am definitely looking forward to it. We have a new generation of world rally cars, and a new team – it’s certainly an exciting time,” said Ogier. “There’s not long before we line-up at the start of Rallye Monte-Carlo and we’ve not had a lot of seat time with the Ford Fiesta WRC, but we’ll give it our best to be ready. We’re aware of the challenges, and I can see how hungry Malcolm Wilson and his team are for success.

“It’s funny to think that just a few months ago I was sitting at a motorsport forum at Wales Rally GB saying how nice it would be to work with him one day. A new partnership between Scentre Group and BMW Group Australia will see 40 new Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations conveniently installed in 10 Westfield shopping centres across NSW, QLD and VIC.

By March 2017, EV drivers will be able to access four charging stations per centre at Westfield Bondi Junction, Chatswood, Miranda, Sydney, Warringah Mall, Carindale, Chermside, Doncaster and Southland. The charging stations can be used by any EV free of charge and will see Westfield centres become the leading shopping destination for EV owners.

There are currently around 8000 Evs in operation in Australia and sales are steadily increasing, with over 35000 EVs expected on Australian roads by 2024. Together, Scentre Group and BMW Group Australia are at the forefront of delivering infrastructure to accommodate this demand.

The incredible Audi SQ7 TDI is ready to stamp its authority on the Australian performance SUV scene. The world’s fastest seven-seat diesel SUV employs a revolutionary 48v electrical architecture that underpins a new drivetrain and dynamic handling concept that challenges convention, and even the laws of physics.

The powerplant that beats at the heart of the SQ7 is an all-new 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine that produces an incredible 320 kW of power and 900 Nm of torque from 1,000-3,250rpm. This enables astonishing acceleration, reaching 100 km/h from rest in a mere 4.9 seconds. Fuel consumption is frugal, sipping only 7.2 litres per 100km.

The engine’s two variable-vane exhaust turbochargers sit inside the V8’s 90-degree vee, and operate in series to produce a maximum of 2.4 bar boost. They are supported by an electric compressor that acts like a supercharger to drive the turbochargers when exhaust gas pressure is insufficient. This innovative solution eliminates ‘turbo lag’, as the compressor wheel can spin up to 75,000rpm in less than 250 milliseconds.

In order to provide the electric compressor with enough energy (up to 7kW is required) to spin up so quickly, a world-first 48-volt electrical architecture runs in parallel with the standard 12-volt system that powers the usual ancillaries. A compact lithium-ion battery can store up to 0.5 kWh and can deliver up to 13 kW.

This power is also used by another 48v system that makes its debut in the SQ7 TDI – the electromechanical stabilisation system. In the simplest terms, the front and rear anti-roll bars are twisted against each other by two electric motors during sporty driving to ensure tight body control, whereas they are decoupled while cruising over bumpy roads to ensure excellent ride comfort. The effect of this system almost defies the laws of physics for such a large vehicle. To further support agile handling, this is available in combination with an all-wheel steering system and the quattro self-locking centre differential on the rear axle in a Dynamic Package for $13,500.

The SQ7 TDI rides on a specially tuned adaptive air suspension system, and to further boost its appeal, it also features a sports exhaust system with sound actuator for a distinctive engine sound inside and outside the car. Features that have already made the Q7 model range so successful also complement the SQ7 TDI, like full seven-seat accommodation with an electrically folding third row, rear seat entertainment system with the optional Audi smart tablet, as well as the sumptuous finish through the cabin that gives all occupants a true feeling of luxury.

The SQ7 TDI is the only vehicle in the entire Audi range that comes equipped with the brand’s full suite of advanced driver assistance safety assistance systems as standard equipment: Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) up to 85 km/h, Side assist, Rear cross traffic assist, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Traffic Jam assist, as well as lane assist make up some of the most popular items.

Nissan Patrol Y61 Wagon Legend Edition

Nissan has developed the Y61 Patrol Legend Edition to celebrate its long heritage in Australia. Based on the Y61 Patrol wagon ST, the Legend Edition comes equipped with more than $10,000 of additional value and is limited to 300 units. It is on sale at authorised Nissan dealerships across Australia. 

Powering the Y61 Patrol Legend Edition is the model’s proven 3.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, delivering 118kW of maximum power and a peak torque of 380Nm (manual, between 2,000 – 2,400 rpm) and 354Nm (automatic, at 2,000 rpm). 

Customers can choose from either a five-speed manual transmission or four-speed automatic transmission. 

The Y61 Patrol’s off-road capabilities come courtesy of various technical solutions. The low ratio (2.02:1) in the transfer case eases progress in steep and particularly rough terrain and the automatic locking free-wheeling hubs (which turn the front wheels in unison) simplify off-road driving in rough conditions. The rear differential lock helps deliver impressive traction in particularly tough terrain. The three-link coil-sprung front suspension aids in wheel articulation, as does the five-link rear suspension which also uses coil springs. Both deliver a comfortable ride in on-road conditions.

Nissan Patrol Y62

The Nissan Patrol Y62 retains the same iconic Nissan Patrol goes-anywhere strengths that have carried the nameplate for 60 years and six generations. This sixth generation Patrol model boasts the power of an efficient and muscular 5.6-litre V8 petrol engine, driving through an advanced seven-speed automatic transmission and a sophisticated, electronically controlled, ALL MODE 4X4 system.

Suspension is independent all round, a departure from the live axles of the previous generations, helping enhance off-road traction.  The Nissan Patrol Y62’s body is larger than previous generations, delivering luxurious accommodation for up to eight passengers (Ti model grade; seven seats in the range-leading Ti-L model grade).

Even with the third row of seats occupied there remains ample space to stow a full-size cooler box in the load bay, which is accessed by via a single piece lift-up tailgate. With the second and third rows of seats folded to form an almost flat floor, more than 3100-litres of cargo space are released.

The Patrol Y62’s V8 petrol engine delivers 298 kW of maximum power and 560 Nm of torque, with 90 per cent of torque available from just 1600 rpm. The seven-speed automatic transmission offers a wider range of gear ratios giving smoother acceleration from rest, improved ride comfort, and better economy.

The new ALL MODE 4X4 drive system is controlled via a circular electronic switch cluster located behind the gear selector, allowing the driver easy mode selection for: sand, rock, snow or on-road driving, activation of the rear differential lock, VDC on/off and Hill Descent Control. The ALL MODE 4X4 controller also allows the driver to select between 4H and 4L.

The Patrol Y62 also features Hill Start Assist and a helical limited slip differential for easy off-road driving.

A notable feature of the Patrol Y62’s chassis is Nissan’s Hydraulic Body Motion Control (HBMC) on the suspension system. This reduces body roll in high-speed corners on sealed surfaces and maximises suspension travel in extreme off-road driving conditions. The HBMC system’s cylinders replace traditional shock absorbers and anti-roll bars.

The Patrol’s combined-cycle fuel consumption is 14.4-litres^ per 100 kilometres travelled. As a comparison, the previous Patrol Y61 fitted with the 4.8-litre six-cylinder used 17.2-l/100km^.

Alfa Romeo Australia has confirmed a four-model line-up for the highly anticipated Giulia premium sedan range when it launches in Australia in February 2017. Based on an all new rear-wheel drive architecture, all Giulia models benefit from perfect 50/50 weight distribution, best in class power-to-weight ratios, and innovative engine and driver technologies.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia stands out for its distinctive Italian design, which is expressed through an impeccable sense of proportions drawn from the flexible technical architecture, as well as the sophisticated simplicity and quality surfaces used both inside and out.

The all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia’s Australian line-up will comprise of five models across four equipment grades – Giulia, Super, Veloce and range-topping Quadrifoglio. There are three petrol and one diesel engine variant, all with an eight-speed automatic transmission standard.

The entry level Giulia is powered by a new turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 147kW and 330Nm, the latter on tap from 1750-4000rpm. This endows the Giulia with both performance and efficiency: 0-100km/h in just 6.6 seconds, and a combined cycle fuel economy of 6.0L/100km.

Standard safety specification includes new efficient active safety systems, including Forward Collision Warning (FCW) with Autonomous Emergency Brake (AEB) and pedestrian recognition, Integrated Brake System (IBS), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) – all of which contributed to the all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia being awarded a five-star EuroNCAP rating, with 98 per cent protection result for adult occupants, the highest score ever achieved by a car, despite the more severe EuroNCAP evaluation system introduced in 2015.

The entry-level Giulia comes generously equipped with leather upholstery, 18-inch alloy wheels, bi-Xenon headlamps, keyless go, stop/start technology, satellite navigation, dual-zone climate control, rain sensing wipers, cruise control, rear parking sensors and a reverse parking camera.

As with all Alfa Romeos, the Giulia’s interior focus is on the driver with the Alfa DNA rotary driving mode selector, a 3.5-inch TFT colour cluster instrument panel, UConnect 6.5-inch display infotainment system with DAB and Bluetooth connectivity, and an 8-speaker audio system.

Next in the range is the Giulia Super, available with a choice of 147kW/330Nm petrol engine or a new-generation 2.2-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel which produces 132kW and 450Nm (from 1750-3750rpm). This engine is a veritable fuel miser, rated at just 4.2L/100km on the urban/country combined cycle, yet still capable of 0-100km/h in 7.1 seconds.

In addition to the base Giulia’s already generous specification, the Giulia Super sports an even higher grade of leather which also adorns the dash and doors, an eight-way power driver’s seat, active cruise control and heated steering wheel. Safety also steps up with the inclusion of blind spot monitoring.

Australians looking for even more sporting prowess in their distinctly Italian sports sedan will be drawn to the Giulia Veloce, powered by a higher-performance version of the turbo 2.0-litre petrol engine, tuned for 206kW and 400Nm. The Giulia Veloce accelerates to 100km/h in 5.8 seconds, yet sips just 6.1L/100km on the combined cycle.

The Giulia Veloce also gains a number of specification advantages over the Giulia Super, including Alfa SDC adjustable suspension, limited-slip rear differential, 19-inch Veloce alloys and an uprated braking package, with calipers distinctively finished in red.

Inside, the Veloce’s cabin steps up the visual performance with aluminium dash inserts and pedals, a sports leather seats and steering wheel, and a premium sound system.

Those who want the best in life will have eyes only for the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, the pinnacle of the Giulia range and the Nurburgring lap record holder. Preliminary results from Australia’s first on-road vehicle emissions test program cast doubt over the relevance of laboratory testing and suggest consumers are commonly being misled. Commissioned by the Australian Automobile Association (AAA), the test results also suggest forthcoming national emissions reduction regulations may be based on flawed assumptions.

In the wake of the Volkswagen scandal, the AAA commissioned the study of 30 vehicles to clarify how real-world emissions differ from those observed in a laboratory setting. Engineering firm ABMARC is using portable, laboratory-standard equipment to analyse emissions produced by vehicles driving in and around Melbourne.

Results show emissions of noxious gasses up to four times the regulatory limits, while greenhouse gas emissions and fuel consumption was up to 35 per cent higher than figures shown on the relevant Government-mandated Fuel Consumption Label, and 20 per cent higher on average. Full results are due by mid-2017, however results from the first 10 vehicles are being released to help inform two important Government reviews; the work of the Ministerial Forum on Vehicle Emissions, and the ACCC’s market study into the new car retailing industry.

AAA Chief Executive Michael Bradley said: “These results suggest that as emissions regulations around the world become more stringent, auto manufacturers are producing vehicles that limit emissions in the laboratory, but not necessarily in the real world.

“Proponents of stricter regulations say higher vehicle and fuel costs passed on to motorists will over time be offset by fuel savings, but our results undermine such assurances as savings accrued only in a laboratory are of little use to consumers in the real world.

“With the Government actively considering stricter standards for Australia’s vehicle and fuel sectors, it’s critical that real-world testing is introduced to ensure motorists aren’t asked to pay more for regulation that fails to deliver environmental benefit.

“The AAA notes that the European Union is currently transitioning away from relying solely on laboratory testing to improve the effectiveness of its emissions regulatory model and we encourage the Australian Government to do likewise.”

Currently, to comply with the Government’s Australian Design Rules, vehicle manufacturers must only meet noxious emissions standards in a laboratory test, and have laboratory-based fuel consumption information displayed on the Fuel Consumption Label at point of sale.

There is no way for Government or consumers to know the degree to which these laboratory results translate in the real world, when a vehicle is driven in Australian conditions using Australian fuels. Therefore, a continued reliance upon laboratory testing will clearly limit the market’s ability to encourage the uptake of lower emissions vehicles.

The AAA’s Transport Affordability Index shows the average Australian household spends around $17,000 per year on transport costs, while AAA national polling shows ‘fuel efficiency’ is the top consideration for about a quarter of Australians when buying a car.

“Only with accurate information can consumers encourage manufacturers to deliver cleaner vehicles into the Australian market,” Bradley said. “And only with accurate information can the Government develop and police regulations delivering the maximum benefit to the environment at the least cost to Australian motorists”.

In addition to the Commodore’s unique all-wheel-drive system, further details surrounding the ‘FlexRide’ suspension system have also been confirmed. The continuously adaptable FlexRide chassis electro-hydraulically adapts the dampers to the road and the driving conditions 500 times per second or 30,000 times per minutes.

Additionally, the driver can save personal preferences for the steering characteristics, throttle response and dampers via the ‘Sport’ button.

  • Standard’: The automatic control selects the best set-up based on the information collected by the vehicle sensors.

The new central ‘Drive Mode Control’ software is the heart and soul of the adaptive chassis. It continuously analyses the information provided by the sensors and setting and recognizes the individual driving style. The individual systems are then optimized for the best traction and road position.

Exterior Design:

The design of the next Commodore is based on the ‘Monza’ Concept car, created by the Opel Design team in Germany. The prominent front grille and the slim-line headlamps are directly inspired by the Monza Concept enhance the wide horizontal gesture of the front end and provide it with a bold appearance. The grille sits lower than on the outgoing model and further emphasises the solid stance.

The side window graphics feature with an upper chrome strip, rather than a full-chrome treatment, and the coupé-like roofline graphically pull the car down and emphasize its stretched appearance. The ‘blade’ light catcher in the lower doors pulls attention rearwards. The new Commodore is as sleek as it looks: it has an exemplary drag factor of 0.26 making it one of the most aerodynamic vehicles in its class.

At the rear, clear and simple lines combined with the slim, precise double-wing LED signature also give the car a wider appearance. The newly designed center high-mounted LED stop lamp has been integrated into the roofline. It helps to give the rear end a more high-tech look typical of premium brands’ vehicles.

Interior Design:

The attention to the smallest detail is also evident inside the Commodore. The cockpit is organized along horizontal lines, enhancing the feeling of elegant lightness and of space. The cockpit is orientated to the driver for a sportier feeling. The generous center console that further embraces the driver provides the feeling of sitting in a much larger class of vehicle. Clean lines, modern surfaces and first-class craftsmanship with soft-feel materials at all touch points contribute to a feeling of elegance and grace.

Infotainment system design:

Equal attention has been paid to the controls and the infotainment interface. The frameless touchscreen of the infotainment system exudes a sophisticated and technical charm. Many functions are controlled via the touchscreen in order to simplify the interface, while three clusters of buttons have been designed to allow quick and intuitive operations: the upper ones for the major functions of the infotainment system, the central ones for climate and heating controls, the lower ones for driver assistant controls. This very clear set-up avoids drivers and passengers having to dive into sub-menus on the touchscreen to find the most essential functions.

The Street Machine Summernats, proudly supported by Rare Spares has officially launched the 30th instalment of Australia’s largest annual horsepower party.

Parliament House in Canberra and more than a dozen spectacular street machines provided the colourful backdrop to welcome the high octane four day automotive extravaganza back to Canberra, taking place this January 5 – 8, 2017.

Summernats co-owner Andy Lopez welcomed everyone in attendance and spoke of the significance of the events 30th birthday and the continued growth of the Summernats ahead of the event.

“It’s our 30th Birthday and we are growing, but certainly not growing up. We have gone from 1,200 cars and 75,000 people attending in 2010. Today I can confirm we have over 2,200 cars already entered to Summernats 30 with more expected. This is more than a 15 per cent increase on our best ever year and pretty jaw dropping,” said Andy.

“We are also expecting close to 110,000 people through the gates over the four days. The event is obviously doing something right, as it continues to attract those who have made it successful and yet also attracts new people every year.”

The Summernats will kick off with the huge annual Citycruise on Thursday at midday, which is a great free event for the Canberra city. The action packed schedule continues over the four days including the world’s biggest burnout competition, the Burnout Masters, elite show judging plus great concerts with an all Aussie line–up including ARIA winners Drapht and Spit Syndicate, plus Airbourne and Thirsty Merc playing on Saturday night. Saturday evening will also see the awarding of Australia’s most coveted Street Machine award in the country, the Summernats Grand Champion.

“I want to thank the Summernats team who bring the event together every year. We have a total of 700 people employed in Canberra over the event over the four days in a huge variety of roles, working in what is a quiet time of year, which is great.
In 2015 an ACT Government commissioned economic impact report confirmed Summernats brings in around 20 million dollars into the ACT economy over the event period.
