Thierry Neuville has raced back into the lead in the 2018 FIA World Rally Championship after winning a gruelling Vodafone Rally de Portugal on the weekend.

Victory at the sixth round of the WRC in northern Portugal promoted Neuville to the top of the drivers’ standings for the second time this year as the series approaches its midpoint. After starting 10 points behind reigning champion Sébastien Ogier, the Belgian left Portugal 19 points ahead and with his Hyundai team still leading the manufacturers’ standings.

Neuville won by 40 seconds over M-Sport teammates Elfyn Evans and Teemu Suninen, steering his Hyundai i20 away from trouble during four days of attrition that sidelined many frontrunners.

Ogier and fellow title challenger Ott Tänak were among drivers who ended pointless after falling foul of Friday’s rock-strewn stages. Kiwi Hayden Paddon’s return to Hyundai after 11 weeks on the bench started with victory on stage two but ended abruptly with a crash later in the day that ended his rally.

Neuville hit the front near the end of Friday’s first leg after the lead changed hands six times in a frantic opening. He doubled his advantage on Saturday and pressed it home on Sunday by claiming four bonus points in the closing Power Stage to secure his second win of the year.

“It was a clever approach all weekend. I had a fantastic car which was working well and I felt comfortable,” he said. “We can be proud of what we achieved here There are a lot of Portuguese mechanics in the team and I think the party is going to be big tonight.”

Second for Evans eased the pressure after a disappointing season and teammate Suninen helped erase the frustration of Ogier’s blank weekend in the M-Sport Ford squad by claiming his maiden podium. He finished 7.3sec behind the Welshman.

Suninen held off Esapekka Lappi and Dani Sordo in an intense fight for the final podium place. Lappi was 7.4sec adrift of his fellow Finn in a Toyota Yaris with Spaniard Sordo 6.2sec further back in his Hyundai. Sordo went to bed on Saturday night in third but woke on Sunday morning in fourth after receiving a 10sec penalty for dislodging two bales on a Porto street stage roundabout on Friday night.

Round seven promises a high-summer shootout on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia. The all-gravel Rally Italia Sardegna is based in Alghero on 8-10 June.

It’s widely known that a MINI offers drivers an unrivaled exhilarating go-kart feel, transforming even the most mundane journey into something much more fun. For the first time, MINI is launching a new service to enable MINI owners to share this unmistakable experience with friends, acquaintances and family.

With the new MINI Sharing app, MINI owners can grant friends, family members or colleagues permission to open and start their vehicle via a smartphone. As part of a pilot project in the Spanish capital, this personal form of car sharing is now being tested under everyday conditions.

The peer-to-peer sharing trial is designed for a fleet of up to 500 vehicles. Owners of current MINI models produced since March 2018 will be invited to participate, and their vehicle will be equipped or retrofitted with a MINI Sharing Module that enables access and engine start via smartphone.

The trail in Madrid will provide important insights for the global expansion of the MINI brand’s sharing economy activities. The BMW Group has identified digital mobility services as one of the future fields to advance as part of NUMBER ONE> NEXT strategy.

With its increased commitment to the D-ACES (Design, Autonomous, Connected, Electrified and Services) topics, the company is playing a leading role in shaping mobility of the future.

"MINI drivers are always ahead of their time, just like their groundbreaking and modern vehicles," says Sebastian Mackensen, MINI Senior Vice President. "With MINI Sharing, we enable our customers in Spain to participate in the sharing economy. This new technology fits perfectly with our desirable cars and our innovative customer demographic."

MINI Sharing allows the vehicle owner to share their MINI with up to ten people of their choosing, with the vehicle availability highlighted in the app's inbuilt calendar function. The guest drivers can use the app to make a reservation request from their smartphone with just a few taps.

After the owner has granted their consent, the location of the vehicle and pedestrian directions are displayed on their phone. Upon arrival at the vehicle, the smartphone on which the MINI Sharing App is installed becomes the car key.

A Bluetooth connection between the smartphone and the MINI makes it possible to open the vehicle doors and start the engine by pressing the start/stop toggle switch.

If desired, the MINI owner can mark specific individuals as VIP users in the MINI Sharing App. These individuals can book the vehicle spontaneously without having to wait for the owner's consent.

After the guest driver completes their journey, the MINI will be parked in an area agreed with the owner and locked via smartphone.

The MINI Sharing App generates a report with the travel data required for billing, and the guest driver is presented with the opportunity to transfer a payment to the MINI owner via PayPal. The cost calculation for the MINI Sharing App is based on a flat rate of € 0.30 per kilometre driven.

Insurance cover for each vehicle can be extended easily, with a lump sum for each additional guest driver participating in the MINI Sharing trial. For data protection reasons, the MINI owner can view the location of their vehicle at any time via the MINI Sharing App - with the exception of instances where another passenger is traveling inside the vehicle.

MINI Sharing creates new opportunities to share the MINI experience with friends and family. Once again, MINI is taking on a pioneering and innovative role in further advancing urban mobility. Based on the trial information gathered from the MINI Sharing Community in Madrid, this innovation could go on to conquer additional cities worldwide.

Holden has announced the introduction of a new fuel-efficient 1.6-litre turbo diesel engine on its all-new, high-tech SUV, Equinox, set to go on sale across Australia from early May. Available across the range, the 1.6-litre turbo diesel boasts an impressive fuel economy from just 5.6L/100km, while retaining strong power and torque of 100kW and 320Nm respectively.

The third engine to be introduced in the Equinox range, the new 1.6-litre turbo diesel engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and available in front-wheel-drive or all-wheel drive. Introduced in late 2017, the all-new Equinox now adds longer-range driving and improved fuel economy to an already impressive list of high-tech features including wireless phone charging and heated and ventilated front seats.

The family friendly, mid-size SUV is also practical, creating a life of ease with its built in hands-free power tailgate† and advanced park assist technology.  Equinox also boasts a segment first safety alert driver’s seat which gives drivers a small vibration to alert them of potential hazards.

“The new 1.6-litre turbo diesel engine boasts leading efficiency while remaining so smooth and refined, you forget you’re driving a diesel,” said Holden’s Executive Director – Marketing, Kristian Aquilina. “The turbo diesel joins the 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre turbo petrol engines currently sold in the range, meaning we’ve got an Equinox to suit every taste, and with our extended seven-year warranty, now is a great time to buy.”

Australia’s most popular SUV looks to extend its hold on the market, with the Mazda CX-5 adding new technologies to boost performance and improve efficiency across all engine grades.

Committed to the pursuit of driving pleasure and achieving optimal efficiency in line with Mazda’s Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030 vision, Mazda has introduced a range of innovative SKYACTIV technologies to the CX-5 engine lineup to improve real-world combustion, torque and power output.

The latest and most advanced SKYACTIV-D 2.2L diesel engine will debut on the Mazda CX-5. It adds a new two-stage twin turbocharger with variable turbine geometry, helping to increase maximum power output from 129kW to 140W and maximum torque from 420Nm to 450Nm.

Taking Mazda one step closer to its goal of ideal diesel combustion, the engine adopts Rapid Multi-stage Combustion, with a new stepped egg-profile combustion chamber in piston, and ultra-high-response multi-hole piezo injectors. Combined with the benefits of the turbocharger, the engine’s compression ratio increases from 14.0:1 to 14.4:1.

A new water flow management system has also been added, quickening engine warm-up to help achieve better real-world fuel economy.

In another first for Mazda, the SKYACTIV-G 2.5L petrol engine adopts cylinder deactivation to reduce fuel consumption when driving at constant speeds.

Unlike other manufacturers employing similar technology, Mazda’s system shuts down cylinders one and four in light-load situations, reducing pumping loss and mechanical resistance. When cruising at 40km/h, real world fuel economy is improved by approximately 20 per cent, and by approximately five per cent when at a constant 80km/h.

Ever evolving and improving Mazda’s petrol engines, a suite of new technologies have been added to both SKYACTIV-G 2.5L and SKYACTIV-G 2.0L engines to further improve efficiency.

A more rapid combustion is achieved with new and precisely tuned intake ports, generating a stronger tumble flow during intake stroke. Combined with a reshaped piston crown, the result is greater torque at low-to-mid rpm and improved fuel economy at high rpms.

The nozzles of the multi-hole fuel injectors have been redesigned for more efficient fuel injection, increasing pressure from 20MPa to 30MPa to realise a faster and more broadly dispersed spray.

A new Water Flow Management system (WFM) adds a coolant control valve to reduce the flow of coolant around the walls of the combustion chamber, helping reduce heat loss while the engine warms up.

The engines also adopts asymmetrical oil rings, with a larger outer radius at the top and smaller radius at the bottom edge, and revised piston skirt curvature realises an ideal barrel shape. Combined, these changes reduce mechanical resistance, contributing to better fuel economy.

Collectively, the updates to the petrol engine range have accounted for a 1Nm increase in torque for the 2.5L variant, and a 1kW increase in power for the 2.0L variant.

The top of the range Akera will also see added functionality with a 360° view monitor added to its equipment, while the Touring will introduce windscreen Active Driving Display in lieu of the flip-up display on the previous model.

This more advanced CX-5 is also now more affordable, with price drops across the range. The Maxx Sport and Touring variants will retail for $400 less than the previous model, while GT and Akera will retail for $800 less.

Mazda Australia Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi, said the updated CX-5 is another example of Mazda’s commitment to constant evolution in pursuit of best in class performance and efficiency.

“The CX-5 introduces some major developments with cylinder deactivation and the variable geometry turbocharger, but it’s the smaller technologies that advance Mazda to the ultimate goal of fuel efficiency in combustion engines,” said Bhindi.

“Mazda truly loves the motorcar, and will continue to refine, innovate and pursue technologies that enhance driving pleasure, while also delivering outstanding environmental and safety performance.”

There are 12 varieties of the updated Mazda CX-5 on offer, including three Maxx, and three Maxx Sport, and two each of the Touring, GT and Akera grades.

The Mazda CX-5 comes with a choice of SKYACTIV-G 2.0L or SKYACTIV-G 2.5L petrol engines, or SKYACTIV-D 2.2L diesel engine, and is available in FWD and AWD drivetrains paired with a 6-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission or a SKYACTIV-DRIVE automatic transmission.

The updated Mazda CX-5 is on sale now.

Ready to take on the toughest Aussie terrains, Mazda has released the New Look BT-50 exclusive to Australia. Designed and developed locally, the New Look BT-50 is purpose built for Australians looking for a tough ute that will tackle everything from the daily grind to off road adventures.

With major front-end design changes and added equipment across grades, this is the second and most comprehensive update to the Mazda BT-50 since its launch in 2011. The New Look BT-50 boasts a bold new bumper and grille to achieve a stronger road stance.

Sharpening up the bumper, the outer edges have been squared off to give the ute a lower visual centre of gravity and a more solid bearing on the road. Strong, straight lines are carried through to new fog light surrounds and a large trapezoid lower air intake with skid plate, accented with mesh texture and a 3-dimensional insert for greater contrast.

Further impressing a wide stance, the grille has also adopted horizontal lines, punctuated by a prominent Mazda badge. XTR and GT grades will have premium chrome grille fins, paired with a dark grey lower bumper insert, while XT will have satin black grille fins and black bumper insert.

The front-end changes are bolstered by equipment upgrades across the range, which includes an exciting first for Mazda, the introduction of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across all grades.

The flagship GT will take another step up in class, offering more convenience and design differentiation as standard. The GT adds a chrome Sports Bar with integrated high-mounted LED stop light, a heavy-duty tub liner to protect the tub and tailgate from scuffs and dents, tailgate central locking to safely secure gear in the tray and a single 12 volt auxiliary socket and light to aid visibility in the tub.

The XT will see the biggest changes with the addition of a Reverse Camera to improve rear vision and a 7-inch Alpine Infotainment System to keep drivers connected to the world around them.

Mazda Australia Managing Director, Vinesh Bhindi, said the Australian-only BT-50 is an important step in the vehicle’s evolution.

“The BT-50 has already won fans in Australia, offering safety, comfort, performance and answering customer’s practical needs with great towing power and payload,” said Bhindi.

“We know Australian customers want all this and a tough looking exterior, so we heeded demand and worked with local engineers to refresh the front-end and toughen up the BT-50.”

“The utility segment is a huge priority in Australia and for Mazda; we’re always looking to improve and enhance our product offering, to remain competitive and appealing to our customers,” said Mr Bhindi.

Making the BT-50 an even more enticing package, drivers will see ownership costs reduced, with servicing intervals updated from 10,000km/12 months to 15,000km/12 months.

Based on a 15,000km/12 month interval, this will save owners of the New-Look Mazda BT-50 more than $850 at the five year service mark. When looking at real-world Mazda owner mileage of 25,000km per annum, there is a potential saving of $1920 after five years.

The potential for cost savings is boosted with driveaway pricing on all New-Look Mazda BT-50 models, starting from $28,990.

The BT-50 will go on sale across Australia in May. To learn more about the New Look BT-50 or to find your local Mazda dealer, visit www.mazda.com.au.

Fuelled by feedback and demand from the Australian market, Isuzu UTE have refined the D-MAX and MU-X range for 2018. The 18MY Isuzu UTE range, bolstered by a number of upgrades, refinements and safety inclusions, is in a prime position to continue its growth within the two most highly-competitive segments of the market — the 1-Tonne Ute and Large SUV segments.

In particular the D-MAX has been growing in popularity thanks to its durability, reliability, towing and serious off- road ability. The latest enhancements have looked to bolster this ‘fit for purpose’ position specifically for Australian conditions, while some key refinements to ride and interior look to cater for the demand for more car-like comfort. Essentially, the 18MY models will look to increase our current customer satisfaction as well as attract a wider audience.

The top of the range Isuzu D-MAX

Long established as a marque for the workman, for 2018 Isuzu UTE has refined the flagship ute offering — expanding the D-MAX range to officially include an upgraded D-MAX LS-T Crew Cab, boasting premium features previously not part of the Isuzu UTE range. Positioned at the driver seeking the perfect balance between ‘tough and rugged’ utilitarian and passenger friendly versatility and refinement, the 18MY Isuzu D-MAX LS-T is positioned to be on the shortlist of buyers considering a premium 1-tonne ute.

Straight off the back of a plethora of major-upgrades in 2017, the 18MY D-MAX range is now headlined by the flagship LS-T, featuring many of the standout features and amenities as found on the MU-X LS-T; 18” wheels with Highway-Terrain (HT) tyres, Sat Nav, roof rails and a Passive Entry and Start System (PESS) on 4x4 LS-T only. Just like the rest of the range the 18MY D-MAX LS-T is powered by Isuzu’s exclusive 3-litre turbo diesel 4JJ1-TC engine — generating 130kW and 430Nm — paired with the smooth Aisin-built AWR6B45 6-Speed Automatic Transmission. Respecting that not all owners necessarily take their ute off-road — instead preferring a ute for the unmatched family-friendly space and versatility, the flagship LS-T is available in two drivetrains; two-wheel drive or through Isuzu’s “Terrain Command” 4WD Select System.

Borrowing styling cues from the flagship MU-X LS-T, the 18MY D-MAX LS-T has been tastefully refined with the additions of a new premium leather accented interior, featuring rich genuine perforated leather (on body contact areas) which is proven to breathe better than non-perforated — plus additional accents of polyurethane leatherette on the hard wearing bolsters and rests. The dash, glovebox and armrest are trimmed in soft touch leatherette, door handles finished in chrome and the air vents and window switches finished in gloss black for a premium look — these soft-touch refinements can also be found inside the D-MAX LS-M and LS-U variants.

Another interior update for the D-MAX 18MY LS-M, LS-U and LS-T variants is the addition of two 2.1-Amp USB charge points; one in the dash, and one in the rear console. This update is fuelled by customer feedback on charging personal mobile devices whilst on the road, and can also be found across the entire MU-X range.

Comfort Suspension

With more and more families turning towards utes for their daily drive, Isuzu engineers have developed a new 3-span leaf spring setup for SX, LS-U and LS-T Crew Cab ute variants — a suspension tune developed with Australian customer feedback in mind. Through the use of stronger and lighter materials this new setup not only improves the ride, comfort and handling — the setup has proven to not compromise the payload capacity versus the 17MY 5 leaf spring setup.

Increased D-MAX GVM

Along with the 18MY suspension upgrade for Crew Cab ute variants, Isuzu Engineers have reassessed the Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) capacity of the entire 18MY D-MAX range — increasing the GVM on 4x2 models to 2,950kg and the GVM on 4x4 models to 3,050kg. This improvement increases the payload capacity of all models by 100kg in comparison to 17MY models. This upgrade gives the D-MAX 4x2 low-ride SX Single Cab Chassis class-leading payload capacity of 1,349kg.

Safety Upgrades

According to feedback from owners, half on average purchase an Isuzu for the purpose of towing — highlighting the strength and versatility of the D-MAX and MU-X powertrain. With that in mind, Isuzu engineers have added Trailer Sway Control (TSC) across all 18MY models (excluding the D-MAX 4x2 low-ride SX Single Cab Chassis manual), improving on the active safety system offerings. Stemming from the vehicle’s Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system, the TSC system monitors trailer movement through the ESC sensors and modulates throttle and brake inputs to individual wheels — bringing the towed trailer under control if unsolicited sway is detected.

Safety has always been at the forefront of Isuzu vehicle development. Previously reserved for LS variants, all 18MY D-MAX ute models now feature a rear bumper to improve occupant collision protection, along with a reversing camera as standard for increased safety and visibility — however both remain optional on cab chassis models due to the nature of the tray.

Extended Service Intervals across range

As a testament to the immense confidence we have in building durable, reliable and efficient vehicles, every Isuzu vehicle is backed by the Isuzu UTE Australia Service Plus Program which includes a 5 year warranty, 5 years Roadside Assistance and 5 year/75,000 kilometre Capped Price Servicing program – which adds further peace of mind when it comes to protecting your investment and your wallet.

Through continual refinement of our Isuzu D-MAX and MU-X, Isuzu engineers have structured a highly competitive Capped Price Servicing Program for 18MY - onwards vehicles, featuring a 12 month or 15,000 kilometre interval. In fact, over the course of 60 months the cost of ownership is one of the most economical within the 1-tonne ute and ute-based SUV class.

HAVAL has previewed its first plug-in hybrid ahead of its official reveal at Auto China 2018 in Beijing. Launched under the company’s luxury brand – WEY – the P8 is set to write a new chapter in the company’s history and represents the first model built on HAVAL’s new Pi4 (plug-in intelligent four-wheel drive) platform.

Combining a 2.0-litre petrol engine driving the front wheels, in tandem with an 85kW rear-mounted electric motor, the P8 boasts an impressive output of 250kW/524Nm and a zero to 100 km/h acceleration of just 6.5 seconds.

Power is delivered to a combination of front wheels (petrol), rear wheels (electric) and all wheels (combined) through a Getrag six-speed dual clutch transmission. Based on the WEY VV7 luxury SUV, the P8 measures 4765x1931x1655mm, has a 2950mm wheelbase and rides on either 20 or 21-inch wheels.

The bold lines of HAVAL’s first PHEV start with the wide-mouthed trapezoidal grille, and continues through the angular LED headlamps, flowing through to the fastback-inspired body and aggressive rear end dominated by the four exhaust pipes. The top-hinged tailgate can be opened automatically by waving a foot underneath the rear bumper.

Inside, the P8 adopts the VV7’s T-style console, angled purposefully toward the driver. The SUV comes loaded with luxury features, including panoramic sunroof, LCD instrument panel, premium sound system, 9-inch touch screen and leather seats with heating, massage and ventilation.

Demonstrating the company’s commitment to adopting the latest safety features, the P8 comes complete with autonomous emergency braking (AEB), forward collision warning (FCW), blind spot monitoring (BSM), lane departure warning (LDW), lane keep assist (LKA) and 360° camera. To aid pedestrian safety, the WEY P8 employs an aluminum alloy bonnet.

The PHEV system offers a 50 kilometre range on pure electric, 660 km range with both motors working in tandem and fuel economy of just 2.3 L/100km. Charging from a 220V home power point can be achieved in seven hours, or just four from a dedicated charger.

Auto China is one of the world’s largest auto shows, alternating each year between Shanghai and Beijing. Last year it attracted more than 800,000 customers. This year’s Auto China will be held at the China International Exhibition Centre in Beijing from April 25 to May 4.

Australian enthusiasts will be able to buy the new-generation Ford Fiesta ST in 2019. The fun-to-drive, dynamic and innovative hot-hatch will arrive in local showrooms in the second quarter of 2019 to join the Australian Ford Performance line-up, which includes the new 2018 Ford Mustang and first-ever Ranger Raptor.

The existing Fiesta ST is the winner of numerous motoring awards both around the world and right here in Australia, where it claimed the MOTOR Bang For Your Bucks trophy two years in a rowi. In fact, with 22 awards globally in its debut year, the existing Fiesta ST had earned more honours than any small performance vehicle from Ford ever upon its arrival, since beaten by the latest Ford Focus RS.

“There is a strong appetite and passion for the Fiesta ST in our line-up, and can see the affinity and esteem that Australians have with driving enjoyment of the existing model,” said Ford Australia President and CEO, Graeme Whickman. “Fiesta ST shows the depth of enthusiast models that we’re bringing to Australia, with everything from this hot hatch through to the Ranger Raptor,” said Whickman.

The next generation Fiesta ST is the most compact model in the Ford Performance line-up and has been created to bring driving thrills and involvement like no other. Built in Germany and based on the highly-praised seventh-generation Fiesta – the current World Rally Champion with Ford Performance partner, UK-based M-Sport – the 2019 Fiesta ST is powered by a 147kWii three-cylinder turbocharged engine from Ford’s award- and race-winning EcoBoost engine line-up, matched exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission.

The Fiesta ST is also renowned for its chassis dynamics, with its dynamic ability, driver involvement and point-to-point real-world performance developed even further for the new generation.

Ford Performance

The Ford Performance global organisation serves as an innovation laboratory and test-bed to create unique performance vehicles, parts, accessories and experiences for customers. This includes developing innovations and technologies in aerodynamics, light-weighting, electronics, powertrain performance and fuel efficiency that can be applied more broadly to Ford’s product portfolio.

“Next generation Fiesta ST customers will benefit from innovations developed by Ford Performance for the Ford GT supercar and Focus RS hot hatchback, including high power EcoBoost and Drive Mode technologies,” said Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance. “Working as one unified Ford Performance team helps us better deliver our core fun-to-drive experience and democratise sophisticated performance-enhancing features for every customer.”

Further details of the Ford Fiesta ST will be announced closer to the its on-sale in 2019.
