Euro NCAP has released the safety ratings of four new cars . Both the Audi A6 and the VW Touareg achieve a maximum five- star rating, the Ford Tourneo Connect achieves a solid four-star rating and the new Suzuki Jimny scores three stars.

The Audi A6 and the VW Touareg score particularly well for vulnerable road user protection including Euro NCAP’s new requirements for cyclist-detecting AEB. The Ford Tourneo Connect compact panel van is an updated version of the vehicle last tested in 2013. The car achieves a solid four stars against the 2018 requirements. The updated Tourneo Connect is equipped with AEB and lane support as standard, even for commercial variants, making it stand out amid competition in this segment. The Suzuki Jimny scores a three-star rating, let down by its underwhelming driver assistance systems.

Michiel van Ratingen, Secretary General of Euro NCAP said,

“Overall, these latest results demonstrate that, as Euro NCAP’s test protocols evolve and become more demanding, a 5-star rating remains an achievable although challenging objective for the auto industry.

“It is particularly positive and welcome that manufacturers are performing well in the assessment of vulnerable road user protection systems such as AEB for cyclists. Euro NCAP has now tested 6 models which feature this life saving technology. These driver assistance systems are the building blocks for potential automation in the future. Importantly they offer tangible safety benefits today.”

The new Sprinter will arrive in Australia during the month of October 2018 with a reinterpreted design, safety features at the highest level, maximum cost-effectiveness, customer and sector-oriented features and an infotainment and telematics package designed for the next era. 

Adaptable down to the last detail: 
More than 1700 different Sprinter variants can be generated by combining body types, drive configurations, cab designs, body lengths, tonnages and load compartment heights. This variability makes the new Sprinter the perfect vehicle for a wide range of transport needs and sectors. The panel van and cab chassis variants will launch in October 2018, followed by the minibus and tractor head versions early in 2019.

Front-wheel drive and new transmissions: 
The well-proven drive concept with rear and all-wheel drive is now supplemented with a new, front-wheel drive system. For reasons inherent to the design, the payload of this version increases by 50 kilograms compared to the previous model, and an 80-millimetre lower loading sill makes loading/unloading and access/egress considerably more convenient.

The absolute leader in safety: 
As an innovation driver, Mercedes-Benz Vans equips the Sprinter with safety features that were previously the preserve of passenger cars. The standard safety equipment includes Active Brake Assist, Blind Spot Assist (not applicable for cab chassis variants), reversing camera (not applicable for cab chassis variants), Lane Keeping Assist, ATTENTION ASSIST and front and window airbags for driver and co-driver. Additionally a whole range of optional safety and assistance systems are now available including the radar-based distance control system DISTRONIC, Active Lane Keeping Assist, and the Parking Package with 360 degree camera. 

Telematics system with 7-inch HD display: 
The third Sprinter generation sets completely new standards when it comes to telematics. The MBUX multimedia system (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) has a 7” HD display as standard with an optional 10.25” alternative head unit, and is controlled either via the touch-capable steering wheel controls, the touchscreen already mentioned or a completely new voice control system.

Powerful six-cylinder impresses with smooth running and ride comfort: 
High torque over a wide engine speed range: the most powerful diesel engine with a displacement of 3.0 litres delivers 140 kW and 440 newton metres of torque at 1,600 to 2,600 rpm. As the only six-cylinder in the large van segment, it not only impresses with its enormous torque, but also with its smooth running and maximum ride comfort. 

Four-cylinder family in three output classes for rear and front-wheel drive: 
Like the 3.0-litre version, the smaller four-cylinder diesel engine has common-rail direct injection. From a displacement of 2.1 litres and with rear-wheel drive, this engine generates a choice of three outputs: 84 kW, 105 kW or 120 kW. With front-wheel drive the outputs available are 84 kW or 105 kW and a motorhome segment exclusive 130 kW option. 

Practical and with a high load capacity: 
The optional loadable wheel arches and fully usable load compartment heights in combination with front-wheel drive increase the versatility of the load compartment. The maximum load capacity is 17 cu. m., with tonnages up to 5 tonnes. The maximum payload is in the weight class 5000kg permissible gross vehicle weight, at 2920kgs.

All Sprinter variants have service intervals up to a maximum of 40 000 kilometres or two years. Its comprehensive warranty means peace of mind for three years or until the vehicle has travelled up to 200 000kms. Standard Roadside Assist comes at no extra cost during the manufacturer warranty period. This means customers are covered anywhere in Australia. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.  Furthermore a simple and flexible range of ServiceCare pay as you go and pre- paid capped priced servicing options will provide transparent servicing costs and peace of mind for customers. 

Australasia’s independent authority on vehicle safety, ANCAP, has awarded Australasia’s top-selling passenger car a 5 star ANCAP safety rating following testing against the most stringent criteria.

The new generation Toyota Corolla hatch achieved high scores across all four key areas of ANCAP assessment:

Provided as standard, all variants of the Corolla offer collision avoidance technologies including autonomous emergency braking (AEB) – which can detect, mitigate or avoid crashes with other vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists; and lane keep assist (LKA) – where if the vehicle deviates from its lane unintentionally, provides automated steering assistance to allow the driver to correct the lane position.

“The safety improvements provided in this generation of the Corolla are a significant step forward,” said ANCAP Chief Executive, James Goodwin.

“The Corolla is a trusted nameplate and Australia and New Zealand’s highest selling passenger car, so it is encouraging to see this affordable, volume-seller continue to achieve a high safety standard.”

“This result clearly shows safety is not a luxury, with private and corporate fleet buyers able to access high levels of safety as advanced collision prevention technologies become increasingly available.”

“Mainstream models, like the Corolla, are now offering advanced speed assistance systems which can read road signs. These systems are the building blocks for automation, and convey the need for vehicle brands, regulators and infrastructure providers to work together to see safety and efficiency benefits realised,” Goodwin added.

A 5 star ANCAP safety rating applies to all petrol and hybrid Toyota Corolla hatch variants (hybrid variants tested) available in Australia and New Zealand.

The latest independent safety assessments from vehicle safety authority, ANCAP, have demonstrated the ongoing commitment from vehicle brands to maintain 5 star standards against increasing criteria.

The Mazda CX-8 and Volvo XC40 have both achieved a 5 star ANCAP safety rating – the first models to be tested and rated by ANCAP to the latest, most stringent 2018 assessment protocols.

“The hurdles have been raised significantly for vehicles tested from 2018,” said ANCAP Chief Executive, James Goodwin.

“We now test and rate against four key pillars of assessment, and across these we have implemented a range of enhancements to encourage vehicle manufacturers to improve the active and passive safety elements of their models.”
“Most notably, we’re looking at the performance and effectiveness of active safety assist technologies, and the ability of a vehicle to protect a broader range of occupants, including children and females.”

“Parents of young children will know that not all vehicles have the ability to safely fit child restraints in all seating positions. To assist, child restraint installation now forms part of each rating.”

“We are assessing the correct installation of a range of commonly available restraints – from newborn to 10 years – in each of the rear seating positions, and 6 year and 10 year child dummies now feature in our physical crash tests.”

Vulnerable road user safety is also enhanced with added emphasis placed on avoiding crashes with pedestrians and cyclists, at day-time and night – over 100 different test scenarios.

“It’s encouraging to see Mazda and Volvo set the standard, with their CX-8 and XC40 models being the first to step up and achieve 5 stars against our increased test standards,” Goodwin said.

“Good levels of performance were achieved by the CX-8 in the area of Child Occupant Protection, with our assessment engineers praising its ability to safely accommodate child restraints in all five rear seating

The 5 star ANCAP safety rating applies to all Mazda CX-8 variants.

“The XC40 performed well across all areas of assessment, offering emergency lane keeping functionality and the full range of autonomous emergency braking systems,” said Goodwin.

All-wheel-drive variants of the Volvo XC40 have achieved a 5 star ANCAP safety rating. The two-wheel-drive T4 has not been assessed and is ‘unrated’.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class will arrive in Australia during the month of August with standard features such as the MBUX multimedia system with widescreen cockpit and touchscreen, plus a host of active standard safety features.

The new A-Class is as youthful and dynamic as ever, but grown-up and comfortable like never before. It completely redefines modern luxury in the compact class, and revolutionises interior design. Technologically the new A-Class not only takes first place thanks to MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience: it also offers a number of functions that were previously the preserve of the luxury class.

All models of the new A-Class are powered by new, efficient petrol engines and in conjunction with the 7G-DCT transmission. Available from launch will be the A 200 powered by a new four cylinder called the M 282 with a displacement of 1.33 litres and up to 120 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque. Combined fuel economy is just 5.7L per 100 km.

"Hey Mercedes"

One of the strengths of MBUX is its intelligent voice control with natural language comprehension, which is activated by the keyword "Hey Mercedes". The new LINGUATRONIC (included in MBUX with extended functions and with large media display) supports many infotainment functions, for example, destination input, phone calls, music selection, writing and hearing messages.

Conventional voice control systems in cars call for certain fixed commands from their users. Thanks to natural speech recognition, MBUX's LINGUATRONIC, on the other hand, obeys virtually every command, recognises and understands nearly all sentences from the fields of infotainment and vehicle operation.

The intelligent language assistance is activated either via a button on the steering wheel or with the command "Hey Mercedes". It's not the human who has to adapt to the machine, but the other way round.

The voice control is also capable of learning. On the one hand it tunes into the user and their voice and also understands non-native speakers better. The system also no longer answers stereotypically, but varies in the dialogue output too.

Tailor-made and capable of learning

MBUX is highly personalisable and configurable. It is also capable of learning and adapts to suit the user.

In the Widescreen cockpit, the customer has the opportunity to select from three display styles: alongside Classic and Sport, the Discreet style is also offered as a special feature – all displays are reduced to what is absolutely essential here.

Via the 10.25-inch instrument cluster, users can individually configure the information shown there: as an alternative to the classic speed display in the left-hand tube, displays such as the analogue clock, trip computer (from start, from reset, range) or information on the current radio station/media title can be placed there. In the right-hand tube, as an alternative to the rev counter, an assistance graphic, the current consumption, the ECO display or a navigation map can be displayed.

All settings can be saved in a profile. If two drivers share a car, each can call up his/her favourite settings easily.

Another individualisation possibility with MBUX with extended functions are so-called theme worlds such as private, business, relaxation, sport, etc. One person can have several theme worlds. They are activated by clicking on the menu bar. The data record of a theme world can include e.g. climate settings, seat adjustment, radio station, navigation destination, driving mode.

Artificial intelligence is used for the prediction features; which are also part of extended MBUX functions. With these, MBUX anticipates what the user would like next. For instance, anyone who often telephones their mother on Tuesdays during the journey home will receive her telephone number as a suggestion on the display on this day of the week. Anyone who regularly switches over to a radio station with news at a certain time also receives this as a suggestion.

And if the navigation system detects a route frequently driven, navigation to this destination is already started in the background. For example, MBUX suggests the fitness studio on the navigation screen. The driver then only needs to confirm, and all the information on the route, such as congestion warnings, is already to hand.

New PEUGEOT PARTNER has generous load capacity and payload; it is also fitted with an overload alert system - a really new on-board technology to guarantee total safety in all circumstances.

The process is simple and effective - the mass is automatically measured when the ignition is switched on; it can also be measured from the load area when the vehicle is stationary by means of a specific control located in the load area.

Once 90 per cent of the total load capacity has been reached, a white LED lights up on the control button; if the maximum authorised load is exceeded a yellow LED lights up, supplemented by a visual warning on the dashboard.

  • Active Safety Brake is deployed if a risk of collision is detected.
  • A tow-bar stabiliser stabilises a trailer by neutralising lateral movements and slowing down the vehicle, if necessary.
  • Automatic headlight dipping.
  • Blind spot monitoring, with a warning in the door mirrors.
  • Hands-free entry and start.

A large 8" colour touch screen provides connectivity. Located within easy reach and tilted towards the driver, it comes with two USB sockets, one Jack socket, Bluetooth and a wireless smartphone charger. The system is supplemented by Mirror Screen that is compatible with Mirror Link®, Apple Carplay™ and  Android Auto™. 
The connected 3D  navigation system features voice control enabling points of interest to be found in a simple and intuitive way. It takes into account real-time traffic conditions (TomTom Traffic). It can display car-parks, service stations and the local weather forecast.

Scaled for efficiency

The fundamental needs of professional users were the main focus when we developed New PEUGEOT PARTNER : optimum functionality under all circumstances.

The dimensions are perfectly in line with the segment, with a length of 4.40m for the Standard version ensuring an optimum effective usable length of 1.81m. With a capacity ranging from 3.30m3 to 3.80m3 depending on the version, this is sufficient to accommodate 2 Europallets.

The Long version, which is  4,75m long (+35cm). provides even greater load capacity. The effective length of this version is 2.16m and a load capacity ranging from 3.90m3 to 4.40m3.

New PEUGEOT PARTNER is built on a version of the EMP2 platform that is used for the latest brand models. This tried-and-tested base enables shorter overhangs and a small turning circle for easy manoeuvring: the kerb to kerb turning radius is only 10.82m for the Standard version and 11.43m for the Long version.

The payload is one of the best in the segment, with values of 650kg up to 1000kg for certain versions, both Standard and Long. The very low fuel consumption versions have a 600kg payload.


Six anchoring rings are provided as standard to ensure that your loads are safely secured. As an option, four more half-height rings may be added.  The loading area is easy to use in all circumstances as it contains a 12V socket and superior lighting with 6 LEDs providing an output of 237lm.

Petrol engines feature two versions of the 1.2 PureTech engine:

Australasia’s independent vehicle safety authority, ANCAP, has released a 3 star ANCAP safety rating for revised Ford Mustang models following a specification upgrade to improve its safety performance.

Following the publication of a 2 star ANCAP safety rating for the Ford Mustang in January 2017, Ford has revised the specification of its Mustang for the right-hand-drive Australian and New Zealand markets, resulting in an upgrade to 3 stars.

“Improvements have been made to the Mustang’s Safety Assist features as well as tuning to restraint systems,” said ANCAP Chief Executive, James Goodwin.

The following equipment is now fitted as standard:

  • Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) – City, Interurban and Vulnerable Road User
  • Forward collision warning (FCW)
  • Lane support system (LSS) – lane departure warning & lane keeping assist

These changes see an increased Safety Assist score of 61 per cent - improved from an original 16 per cent, and an increased Pedestrian Protection score – rising from 64 per cent to 78 per cent.

“Structurally however, the revised Ford Mustang is identical to the Mustang we originally rated, meaning it still falls short of our expectations in the areas of Adult Occupant and Child Occupant Protection.”

“The inclusion of driver assistance aids such as AEB and lane keep assist is a definite step in the right direction, yet these upgrades have neglected to address the injury risk posed to rear seat occupants as well as whiplash protection,” Goodwin said.

The revised Ford Mustang enters Australian and New Zealand markets 12 months after revised left-hand-drive models were made available for the European market.

The 3 star ANCAP safety rating applies to Fastback (V8 and EcoBoost coupe) variants built from December 2017. Fastback variants sold from December 2015 through to those built in December 2017 hold a 2 star ANCAP safety rating. Other variants are unrated.

Honda Australia has announced the full suite of Honda Sensing safety and driver-assist technologies will be fitted as standard equipment across all next-generation models. The rollout of Honda Sensing is in fact already underway, with more than 20 per cent of current model variants equipped with the advanced technology systems.

Honda Sensing is the exclusive intelligent suite of safety and driver-assist technologies currently available in Australia on the Honda Accord, Civic sedan, Civic hatch, CR-V and Odyssey.

Honda Australia Director, Stephen Collins, said: “Australian new car buyers are becoming increasingly aware of the latest safety technology in vehicles across the board but there is confusion on how they work.

“Honda is committed to bringing cars to the Australian market that are as competitively priced and value-packed as possible, and having the very best in safety technology is one of our highest priorities,” he said.

“Honda is well known for its excellence in engineering and while we are not first to market with this technology, we strive to ensure we are best to market. I’m confident that our Honda Sensing package will provide Australian consumers with a system that is intuitive and effective in its role of driver assistance.”

The results of a Honda-commissioned survey of 1,200 new car buyers intending to purchase in the next two years, showed that there is a significant opportunity and need to educate the market on the importance and benefit of crash prevention technology.

While customers generally understood airbags, anti-lock brakes and safe body structures, their knowledge of many of the newer safety technologies available was quite low.

Lane keeping assist/lane departure warning/lane change monitor and accident avoidance/collision detection/warning signal technologies were only top-of-mind with a small proportion of the surveyed new car intenders (12 per cent and 10 per cent respectively).

However, once educated on each technology, the market appeal for the advanced safety features increased significantly.

“It’s clear that if you’re talking about the customer – and Honda is focusing on this – you have to approach this type of safety technology with a customer education message,” Collins said.

“With this knowledge we plan to stagger the rollout of Honda Sensing and at the same time educate customers, ensuring they walk the journey with us and understand how Honda Sensing will complement their driving experience.”

British driver Kris Meeke’s future in the FIA World Rally Championship is in doubt after the official Citroën team dropped him from the remainder of the 2018 season, citing “an excessively high number of crashes”.

Team principal Pierre Budar said the stunning decision was a preventative measure for the safety of Meeke and co-driver Paul Nagle, who were lucky to escape a violent crash on last weekend’s Rally Portugal.

The pair’s Citroën C3 went off the road and into trees at high speed on Saturday afternoon. He and Nagle weren’t injured, but the car was destroyed.

The most dramatic move in the WRC season so far means Meeke won’t contest Rally Italia Sardegna on 7-10 June, where Citroën will be represented by Craig Breen/Scott Martin and Mads Ostberg/Torstein Eriksen.

The team said it would shortly announce its line-up for the remainder of the season, including Kennards Hire Rally Australia on 15-19 November. Nine-time champion Sébastien Loeb has one more appearance scheduled in his three-event comeback programme with Citroën, in Spain in October.

A team statement from its base near Paris on Thursday afternoon said: “Due to an excessively high number of crashes, some of which were particularly heavy and could have had serious consequences with regard to the crew’s safety, and given that the risks involved were unjustified by the sporting stakes at play, Citroën Racing WRT has decided to terminate the participation of Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle in the 2018 WRC.”

Pierre Budar added: “This wasn’t an easy decision to make because it effects (sic) a driver and a co-driver, but it is largely founded on safety issues which come under my preoccupations as Team Principal. We have consequently chosen to make this decision as a preventive measure.”

Citroën did not say if Meeke would be involved with the team after this year.

Mentored by the late world champion Colin McRae, the Ulsterman, now 38, got his chance with the WRC elite when he joined Citroën late in 2013, just in time for Rally Australia. Blazing speed netted victories in Argentina in 2015, Portugal and Finland in 2016 and Mexico and Spain in 2017; his Finnish win was the first by a British driver.

But his talent seemed too often compromised by crashes. Last year, although he won in Mexico, a disappointing mid-season run of results led to him being benched in Poland.

Meeke contested Rally Australia in 2013 (retired), 2014 (4th), 2015 (3rd) and last year (7th).

All variants of the new Jaguar E-PACE have achieved an industry-recognised 5 star ANCAP safety rating. Jaguar’s first compact SUV has been tested to provide the highest standard of safety, with high scores of 86 per cent for adult occupant protection, 87 per cent for child occupant protection and 77 per cent for pedestrian protection.

The E-PACE performed well in the side and frontal test for both adult and child occupants. In the pedestrian tests, E-PACE scored highly, particularly for the protection of a pedestrian’s head in the event of a collision. The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) is Australasia’s leading independent vehicle safety advocate. ANCAP recommends 5 star rated cars.

The advanced technology is able to detect a collision risk with cars or pedestrians in the road ahead and automatically apply the brakes.

In safety assist tests, E-PACE performed well with a score of 72 per cent. The Autonomous Emergency Braking system demonstrated its high reliability when tested at highway speeds of 80km/h.
