The all-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class range is set to receive a healthy boost before the end of the year with the introduction of the new A 250 4MATIC. Available for a limited time, the A 250 4MATIC arrives with the same generous levels of standard equipment as the A 200, but adds more power and all-wheel drive traction.

The M 260 four-cylinder engine in the A 250 4MATIC is essentially a further development of the previous M 270. Utilising 165 kW of power and 350 Nm of torque and combined with the standard 7G-DCT dual clutch transmission, the A 250 4MATIC is able to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds. Combined fuel consumption is 6.6L per 100 km.

The 4MATIC system has been developed further, and now offers even more driving pleasure and efficiency. Using the DYNAMIC SELECT switch, the driver is able to influence the 4MATIC characteristics even more than before.

4MATIC components include the power take-off to the rear axle, which is integrated into the automated dual clutch transmission, and the rear axle differential with an integrated multi-plate clutch. This is no longer electro-hydraulically powered, but instead electro-mechanically.

Drive torque distribution between the front and rear axles is fully variable. Depending on the driving situation, 100 per cent of the drive torque can be directed to the front axle (e.g. when driving straight ahead with no increased slip at the front axle), or in borderline cases up to 50 per cent can be directed to the rear axle if the friction coefficient suddenly changes.

Using the DYNAMIC SELECT switch, the driver is able to influence the characteristics of 4MATIC even more than before. In the A-Class there are two characteristic curves available for clutch control. Models equipped with 4MATIC have a four-link rear suspension.

As with the A 200, the Mercedes-Benz A 250 4MATIC packages 18-inch aero alloy wheels, MBUX multimedia system with widescreen cockpit (2 x 10.25-inch digital screens), TOUCHSCREEN Central Display with NTG 6 MB Navigation, standard LED headlights with Adaptive High Beam Assist, keyless start and wireless charging.

The A 250 4MATIC also arrives with a host of standard safety equipment such as nine air bags (front, pelvis side, and window bags for driver and front passenger, side bags for rear occupants and knee bag for driver), Active Brake Assist with semi-autonomous braking function, Active Parking Assist including PARKTRONIC, Active Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Assist with exit warning, Traffic Sign Assist and reversing camera.

Timing and information regarding upcoming models in the A-Class range, including the entry model A 180, will be announced before year end.

The all-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class will arrive in Australia during the month of August with standard features such as the MBUX multimedia system with widescreen cockpit and touchscreen, plus a host of active standard safety features.

The new A-Class is as youthful and dynamic as ever, but grown-up and comfortable like never before. It completely redefines modern luxury in the compact class, and revolutionises interior design. Technologically the new A-Class not only takes first place thanks to MBUX – Mercedes-Benz User Experience: it also offers a number of functions that were previously the preserve of the luxury class.

All models of the new A-Class are powered by new, efficient petrol engines and in conjunction with the 7G-DCT transmission. Available from launch will be the A 200 powered by a new four cylinder called the M 282 with a displacement of 1.33 litres and up to 120 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque. Combined fuel economy is just 5.7L per 100 km.

"Hey Mercedes"

One of the strengths of MBUX is its intelligent voice control with natural language comprehension, which is activated by the keyword "Hey Mercedes". The new LINGUATRONIC (included in MBUX with extended functions and with large media display) supports many infotainment functions, for example, destination input, phone calls, music selection, writing and hearing messages.

Conventional voice control systems in cars call for certain fixed commands from their users. Thanks to natural speech recognition, MBUX's LINGUATRONIC, on the other hand, obeys virtually every command, recognises and understands nearly all sentences from the fields of infotainment and vehicle operation.

The intelligent language assistance is activated either via a button on the steering wheel or with the command "Hey Mercedes". It's not the human who has to adapt to the machine, but the other way round.

The voice control is also capable of learning. On the one hand it tunes into the user and their voice and also understands non-native speakers better. The system also no longer answers stereotypically, but varies in the dialogue output too.

Tailor-made and capable of learning

MBUX is highly personalisable and configurable. It is also capable of learning and adapts to suit the user.

In the Widescreen cockpit, the customer has the opportunity to select from three display styles: alongside Classic and Sport, the Discreet style is also offered as a special feature – all displays are reduced to what is absolutely essential here.

Via the 10.25-inch instrument cluster, users can individually configure the information shown there: as an alternative to the classic speed display in the left-hand tube, displays such as the analogue clock, trip computer (from start, from reset, range) or information on the current radio station/media title can be placed there. In the right-hand tube, as an alternative to the rev counter, an assistance graphic, the current consumption, the ECO display or a navigation map can be displayed.

All settings can be saved in a profile. If two drivers share a car, each can call up his/her favourite settings easily.

Another individualisation possibility with MBUX with extended functions are so-called theme worlds such as private, business, relaxation, sport, etc. One person can have several theme worlds. They are activated by clicking on the menu bar. The data record of a theme world can include e.g. climate settings, seat adjustment, radio station, navigation destination, driving mode.

Artificial intelligence is used for the prediction features; which are also part of extended MBUX functions. With these, MBUX anticipates what the user would like next. For instance, anyone who often telephones their mother on Tuesdays during the journey home will receive her telephone number as a suggestion on the display on this day of the week. Anyone who regularly switches over to a radio station with news at a certain time also receives this as a suggestion.

And if the navigation system detects a route frequently driven, navigation to this destination is already started in the background. For example, MBUX suggests the fitness studio on the navigation screen. The driver then only needs to confirm, and all the information on the route, such as congestion warnings, is already to hand.

The new A-Class will launch on August 10 across Australia and will be available from all authorised Mercedes-Benz dealerships, the A 200 is priced at $47,200 (MRLP).

The new A200 is the first of a complete range of A-Class vehicles that will be progressively launched in Australia. Timing and information regarding upcoming models in the A-Class range, including the entry model A 180 and the A250 will be available later this year.

Mercedes-Benz Australia has announced pricing and specification for the new generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class which goes on sale in January 2016. Combining benchmark driving dynamics and safety technologies with enhanced design and connectivity features, the new A-Class is sportier than ever, and ready for a new generation.

“The progressive new A-Class continues the success story of our compact car range” said Horst von Sanden, CEO and Managing Director, Mercedes-Benz Cars Australia/Pacific. “Since 2013, the A-Class model range has enhanced the youthful appeal of our brand, and been one of the real highlights in our product offensive. This latest generation delivers even greater comfort and value to our customers.”

The new generation A-Class model range provides exceptional value right from the entry level A 180. Consuming just 5.8 L/100km from a 1.6 L turbocharged engine, the A 180 includes 17” wheels, Garmin® MAP PILOT navigation, Blind Spot Assist, reversing camera, KEYLESS Start, DYNAMIC SELECT and a Diamond Grille in black as standard. The A 200 (petrol) produces 115 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque from a 1.6 L engine and includes 18” wheels, a Mirror Package and sports seats with lumber support in addition to the entry level equipment. Sharing the identical level of specification, the A 200 d consumes just 4.2 L/100km, while producing 100kW and 300Nm from a 2.1 L diesel engine.

The A 250 Sport 4MATIC now produces 160 kW of power in combination with the 7G-DCT dual-clutch transmission. Arriving with 4MATIC all-wheel drive as standard, the A 250 Sport 4MATIC also includes 18” AMG wheels, AMG Bodystyling, AMG Ride Control suspension, LED fixed headlamps, KEYLESS-GO, a panoramic sunroof and ambient lighting with 12 colours. The Mercedes-AMG A 45 4MATIC delivers performance that is unrivalled in its class – the new car accelerates from 0 - 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds and produces a maximum output of 280 kW and a peak torque of 475 Nm.

The revised gear ratios, aerodynamic fine-tuning and the new AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes raise overall performance to a higher level, and underline the claim to leadership in this market segment. Completely new for the Mercedes-AMG A 45 4MATIC, the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package sharpens up the vehicle dynamics even further. One major component is the newly developed, mechanical front axle locking differential, which significantly improves traction in sporty driving environments. The greatest advantages become apparent during fast acceleration out of bends, where the locking differential allows maximum grip and high rates of lateral acceleration.

The Mercedes-AMG A 45 4MATIC arrives with 19” AMG wheels, AMG Performance Seats, AMG Performance Exhaust, AMG DYNAMIC SELECT (including Race Mode), COMAND Navigation, Harman Kardon DISTRONIC PLUS and Heated Front Seats as standard. With DYNAMIC SELECT, the vehicle characteristics can be adjusted at the touch of a button, as the system modifies the engine, transmission, suspension, steering and air conditioning to meet the driver's perference.

The four optional driving modes include “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Eco” and “Individual” settings. DYNAMIC SELECT allows a particularly broad range of setting options in combination with the new suspension with adaptive damping, including Comfort mode with comfortable damping characteristics and Sport mode for a sporty and more taut damper set-up. All models are equipped with DYNAMIC SELECT as standard.

"With the DYNAMIC SELECT driving programme selector, the new chassis with adaptive damping and LED high-performance headlamps, the new generation of the A-Class demonstrates just how high the level of innovation can be in this segment", says Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, Group Research & Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. Already familiar from the Mercedes-AMG GT S and Mercedes-AMG C 63 S, AMG DYNAMIC SELECT now also allows the widest possible selection of driving dynamics in the Mercedes-AMG A 45 4MATIC. To this end, five driving modes including “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport +”, “Individual” and “Race” are available for selection.

Striking lines, dynamically curved surfaces and coupé-like window lines characterise the exterior of the A-Class, following the design philosophy of sensual purity. With a diamond grille, new LED high-performance headlamps (standard on the A 250 Sport 4MATIC and AMG A 45 4MATIC), and newly designed tail lamps with dual tailpipe trim integrated into the bumper, the new generation emphasises the sportiness and dynamics of the successful compact class model series. With its dramatic design in the style of the successful MERCEDES-AMG PETRONAS Formula 1 team, the special "Motorsport Edition" model will particularly appeal to racing fans.

Available on the A 250 Sport 4MATIC, Petronas green highlights adorn the rim flanges of the AMG wheels, AMG rear aerofoil, areas of the front and rear bumper trim, and exterior mirrors. Eye-catching details are also carried into the interior including Petronas green surrounds of the air vents and the contrasting topstitching.

With numerous driving assistance systems from the drowsiness detection system ATTENTION ASSIST to DISTRONIC PLUS, the A-Class provides occupants with comprehensive support and protection. The A-Class range arrives with a host of standard safety technologies including: 9 Airbags, PRE-SAFE®, Blind Spot Assist, COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS and an Active Bonnet. The Mercedes-AMG A 45 4MATIC also arrives with DISTRONIC PLUS and Lane Keeping Assist (Passive) as standard. The new-generation A-Class is the first Mercedes-Benz model to be available (from December production) with comprehensive smartphone integration: Apple® CarPlay® (for iPhone® owners). In the case of e.g. Apple® CarPlay® the system supports telephoning, navigation and listening to music, receiving and sending text messages and emails as well as Siri voice control.
