Holden’s dream ute just became a reality. Enter the Colorado Z71 Xtreme, Holden Colorado’s newest edition, based on the celebrated Colorado Xtreme concept vehicle, first unveiled at the Bangkok International Motor Show in 2016.

Designed and built by Holden’s talented Port Melbourne-based design team, the Colorado Xtreme showcased a wide range of concept accessories that captured customers’ imagination; accessories that have now inspired the new vehicle.

Holden’s Colorado Z71 Xtreme’s tough exterior loaded with accessories is matched by its off-road capability, ready to take on any terrain or driving conditions.

To help tackle all types of activity, the Colorado Z71 Xtreme, based on the top of the range Colorado Z71, adds a best-in-class winch system equipped with a heavy-duty bash plate, as well as 10,000 lb load capacity and a 30m synthetic line.

Colorado Z71 Xtreme’s high visibility LED light bar, combined with a winch bar, upgraded front suspension, all terrain tyres and vehicle recovery kit, add to its go anywhere capability, day or night.

Holden’s tough, limited-edition ute also boasts a long list of concept vehicle inspired genuine accessories, designed and developed in Australia.

“The top end of LCV market continues to develop, and we’re seeing a growing number of customers demanding greater off-road capability,” said Holden’s Product Marketing Manager, Andre Scott.

“The Colorado Xtreme was a concept car that resonated with our customers, and to not only put it into production, but elevate it, is very exciting,” said Holden’s Product Marketing Manager, Andre Scott.

“Backed up with a long list of accessories, customers can have confidence that their ute will not only look rugged but will be able to perform in the harshest of environments,” he said.

Equipped with a big 2.8 litre Duramax Turbo Diesel engine, 500Nm of torque* and a 3.5 tonne towing capacity, the Colorado Z71 Xtreme boasts the same impressive credentials of the Colorado Z71, with a new-look tough exterior and upgraded off road capability to match.

Holden’s Australian engineers have steered significant engineering and development changes on the new and improved, high-tech 2017 Colorado. Fresh from its recent public reveal, the 2017 Holden Colorado is set to go on sale from early September, with Holden engineers confident the new vehicle will more than handle Australia’s distinctive driving conditions and customer requirements.

“The variety of roads in Australia and the variety of ways in which Australians use trucks means the 2017 Colorado has to be versatile enough to handle everything thrown at it,” said Holden’s Lead Development Engineer, Amelinda Watt. “We know customers like to drive their Colorado off-road or on unsealed roads, but we also know they spend a lot of time on the bitumen. We’ve focused on improving refinement and driveability with a range of chassis changes, including electric power steering as well as engine and transmission noise and vibration refinements.

“We’ve also had the benefit of international experience, as the Colorado program was a co-development project between GM Brazil, GM Thailand and Holden – a great example of the type of engineering work Holden will be responsible for in the future.”

International Engineering Collaboration

With significant input and involvement from the outset of the 2017 Colorado program, Holden engineers were able to drive change into the popular truck, based on Australian customer feedback and expectations. In collaboration with Colorado’s GM Brazil Homeroom and GM Thailand Manufacturing facility, Holden engineers shared their expertise with international colleagues throughout the development of the product.

Holden engineers participated in numerous development activities and drive events in Brazil in addition to completing critical local testing at Holden’s Lang Lang Proving Ground and on public roads around Victoria. The final development drive for the Colorado program, known internally as the ‘100 per cent Buy-off ride’, was managed by Holden in Australia and tackled a variety of terrain. Combined with an extensive Captured Test Fleet program, local testing accumulated more than 100,000 km on inner-city and suburban roads, rural country roads and 4x4 tracks in state forests.

“Being involved from the start of Colorado’s development has given us the opportunity to ensure we have been able to address customer feedback,” Watt said. “It’s also been beneficial to hold the final development drive in Australia and have colleagues from Brazil ,Thailand, India, USA and Europe visit and see first-hand the type of terrain our customers drive on.”

Improved Driveability (Chassis Changes)

As the 4x4 Crew Cab truck segment continues to increase each year (doubled since 2006), it’s clear customers are using their Colorado for much more than simply hauling the tools to work. They need their truck to be versatile and easy enough to drive every day.

Co-developed with the GM Brazil team, Colorado’s Electric Power Steering (EPS) delivers a more responsive feel, giving the driver increased confidence. A revised, steering calibration in combination with a faster steering rack (going from 41mm/rev to 48mm/rev), and the number of turns lock-to-lock lowered (3.9 to 3.29) delivers a car-like feel and a more precise response.

Major changes to Colorado’s suspension, co-developed by Holden with GM Brazil, delivers improved body control and ride isolation. The changes include the introduction of digressive front and rear shocks, an increase in size of the front stabiliser bar (29/31mm to 34mm) and revised spring rates.

Other key developments in Colorado’s chassis include a revised set of engine, transmission and body mounts to provide a more refined and composed ride, in addition to a new final drive ratio (only in Australia) on manual transmission Colorado which will improve drive quality, particularly while towing.

Car-like refinement

The key to Holden engineers achieving improvements to powertrain noise and vibration in the 2017 Colorado is the introduction of a Centrifugal Pendulum Absorber (CPA) torque converter. Watt said: “CPA torque converters are more commonly found in premium diesel passenger cars, its introduction is a first for the truck segment in Australia which is exciting.

“The CPA torque converter helps reduce engine noise and vibration by cancelling out torsional vibrations in the driveline normally felt in the cabin. The added benefit to the CPA is the ability to apply a revised transmission calibration strategy with results in driveability and fuel economy improvements.”

Additionally, Colorado’s relocated balance shaft, along with a new engine acoustic pack and wind noise package, ensures a quieter and more comfortable driving environment.

Active and passive safety

The 2017 Colorado has been developed to the highest safety standards with additional active and passive safety features ensuring Colorado is not only one of the most high-tech vehicles in Australia, but also one of the safest. For slow speed reversing manoeuvres, a rear-view camera is available as standard across the range*. Forward Collision Alert and Lane Departure Warning accompany Front and Rear Park Assist and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System to provide a comprehensive active safety package**.

An upgrade in passive safety features includes key structural improvements in addition to a new driver’s knee airbag, which takes Colorado’s total airbag count to seven.

The redesigned 2017 Chevrolet Colorado has made its public debut in Brazil, giving Australians an indication of what’s on the horizon for the popular Holden Colorado later this year. Following the Bangkok reveal of the GM Australia built Colorado Xtreme show vehicle, the redesigned 2017 Colorado is introduced with fresh styling, increased technology and an extended range of accessories inspired by the show vehicle.

Holden’s Executive Director – Sales, Peter Keley, said the redesigned Colorado promised greater refinement, new advanced connectivity and safety features, along with distinctive new styling.

“The Chevrolet Colorado revealed by our Brazilian colleagues is the result of ongoing work between Holden and Chevrolet Brazil and a clear indication of where the Holden Colorado is heading,” Keley said. “With significant local engineering, this vehicle will be the most refined Colorado ever while maintaining all of the capability of the current model. When combined with a new design that balances elegance and strength, it will perfectly bridge the gap between weekday workhorse and weekend explorer.

“It will also follow the lead set by Spark, Captiva and Insignia VXR, boasting advanced technology features, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in a new Holden MyLink infotainment system.”

Tough and Refined Design

The 2017 Colorado has been designed with a tough, yet refined appearance. Its lines are more angular and purposeful, a nod to its American-truck DNA, giving it strong proportions to ensure it looks robust and tough, reflecting its serious off road capability.

The redesigned Colorado adopts a global design language that communicates power, strength and prestige. Sculptural artistry and precision are emphasised by a distinctive, sporty front fascia, combined with an extended slim line grille and more muscular bonnet that give the vehicle a tough, strong stance. Colorado’s expressive new look combined with new slim LED daytime running lamps give it an unmistakable road presence and ensure it will stand out from the crowd.

Colorado’s interior introduces an element of prestige to its rugged design, with a full styling makeover that focuses on comfort, spaciousness, refinement and technology. Designed with the driver and passenger in mind the new-look dash and seat trims elevate the premium feel of the vehicle, while the redesigned center console boasts an easy to use, intuitive layout featuring an eight inch color touchscreen and houses the latest MyLink infotainment system, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Soft touch sophisticated materials, fabrics and finishes are used throughout the truck ensuring it is as comfortable as it is capable. Thoughtful use of materials ensure they are durable while enhancing occupant comfort, while new trim inserts feature tailored stitching that creates a whole new level of refinement.

Further enhancing Colorado’s striking design and ‘go anywhere’ character is a wide range of genuine Holden accessories inspired by the recently showcased Colorado Xtreme show truck. Positive feedback to the truck, revealed at the 2016 Bangkok International Motor Show, means as much as 70 per cent of the truck’s accessories will be made for the 2017 Colorado.

Customers with a desire to personalize their vehicle will be able to choose from popular additions including safari bar, sports bar and optional alloy wheels, allowing customers to effectively recreate the well-received show car.

Whilst Australian Colorado customers are attracted by a stylish, tough vehicle design, they demand it to be able to perform exceptionally well dynamically. Armed with customer feedback of the current Colorado, Holden engineers collaborated with international colleagues to ensure they were able to give Colorado a more refined, comfortable drive without losing any of the capable, tough characteristics it is known for.

Holden’s Vehicle Development Manager, Jeremy Tassone, said the 2017 Colorado was developed with key Australian engineering input to ensure the vehicle would meet the needs of a range of customers in different markets.

“Colorado customers use the vehicle for different purposes depending on the market,” said Tassone. “Australian customers demand quality from their vehicle in every area, regardless of whether it’s being used as the weekday workhorse or for weekend surf trips. We’ve worked hard to make sure we have engineered greater refinement without losing any of Colorado’s tough characteristics, off-road capability and impressive towing capacity.”

With a striking new design, advanced connectivity features and refined driving characteristics, the new and improved 2017 Colorado will go on sale in Australia later this year.
