Great Wall Utes have a reputation for being honest, simple and pretty tough.

As part of their 2018 Plate Clearance, Great Wall have dropped the price of their Dual Cab 4x2 petrol to $19,990 driveaway making it Australia’s lowest priced, brand new Dual Cab ute and eligible for the Government’s $20,000 instant tax write-off.

The Dual Cab has quite a bit of fruit including a 1 tonne payload, 6 airbags, tyre pressure monitoring, Bosch ABS, stainless steel sports bar, side steps, bed liner, electric driver’s seat, rear parking sensors, climate control and no charge metallic paint. The Diesel 4x2 Dual Cab is only $3,000 more at $22,990 driveaway.

The Diesel Single Cab starts from $18,990 driveaway including a free Aussie-made aluminum tray. The 2018 Plate Clearance ends 31/12/2018. For details visit greatwallmotors.com.au.

Independent vehicle safety advocate, ANCAP, has released a concerning 2 star safety rating for the ‘all-new’ Great Wall Motors Steed. 5 star ratings have also been released for the Honda Civic, Hyundai i30 and Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo Activity.

Despite claims from the vehicle brand that the Chinese dual cab is ‘all-new’ and offers ‘outstanding levels of performance, value, safety and comfort,’ the underpinnings of the Steed differ little to that of the previous generation dual cab ute which carried the V240 model name.

“This is a disappointing result for consumers and the brand,” ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, James Goodwin said. “While the Steed is equipped with six airbags and electronic stability control, features which were not offered on the previous model, there has been little change to the vehicle’s structure to improve the safety of the passenger cabin.”

ANCAP is urging consumers in the market for a new car to be wary of such claims, with independent testing key to understanding the true safety performance of a vehicle. Excessive footwell deformation, separation of footwell panels and pedal displacement was observed in the frontal offset crash test. Steering column components were a potential source of knee injury for the driver, and dash components were a potential injury source for both the driver and passenger.Protection of the driver and front passenger from whiplash injuries was also marginal.

The Steed is not fitted with top tether child restraint anchorages and is therefore not suitable for transporting young children. Achieving top results with 5 star safety performance were the Honda Civic (sedan and hatch), the Hyundai i30 and the Mercedes-Benz recreational van, the Marco Polo Activity. The Honda Civic sedan and Hyundai i30 were introduced to the market in mid-2016 and April 2017 respectively and their 5 star ANCAP safety ratings apply to all variants.

The Civic hatch will be released locally next month and its rating applies to all hatch variants with the exception of the Type R which is unrated. The 5 star ANCAP safety rating for the Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo Activity carries through as a variant of the Mercedes-Benz V-Class and applies to all models built from January 2017.

Great Wall Motors return to Australia is complete with the launch of the all-new Steed Dual Cab Ute. It draws on a history that has made the Great Wall brand the best-selling ute in the world’s largest automotive market for the past 18 years.

Featuring new levels of styling, performance, safety and comfort, the all-new Steed represents a new benchmark for the Chinese manufacturing powerhouse with a reputation for toughness and reliability.

“The new Steed is the ute Australian farmers and tradies have been looking for,” said Great Wall Motors Australia General Manager Tony Carraturo. “It represents a great combination of form and function that offers outstanding value for money. The long list of standard features – including ESP and six airbags – gives us confidence Great Wall will once again be a hit with customers in the light commercial vehicle sector wanting a great value one-tonne ute.

“Australians are renowned for recognising a great value proposition when they see it, and we are confident the new Great Wall Steed will strike a chord that resonates around the country,” said Carraturo.

The new Great Wall Steed Dual Cab Ute boasts a tough new exterior design, dominated by a new large chrome grille. Integrated with new headlamps, daytime running lamps and chrome brightwork, the Steed represents a clear evolution from the last Great Wall ute launched in Australia.

The new Great Wall is 305mm longer than its predecessor and 30mm higher. The rear tub is now 155mm longer, while a new front grille design adds a further 150mm to the front of the car. Standard exterior features include side steps, a stainless steel sports bar, mirror-mounted indicators, daytime running lamps and 16-inch alloy rims.

Inside, the new ute is packed with creature comforts designed to delight drivers and passengers alike. The list of standard features is long, including heated seats, powered driver’s seat (6-way), cruise control with steering wheel controls, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, stainless steel scuff plates and climate control air-conditioning.

Safety was a key feature for the engineering team, with the new Steed boasting six airbags, including full-length side curtain airbags. Every Great Wall Steed dual cab ute also comes standard with Bosch’s V9.0 Electronic Stability Program, including ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution, Brake Assist, and Hill-start Assist Control. It is also one of the few on the market that comes standard with Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

Mandatory on passenger vehicles sold in the USA and EU, TPMS provides the driver with instant warnings of abnormal tyre pressures. Safety experts believe incorrectly inflated tyres are responsible for numerous accidents. In addition, running correct pressures reduces tyre damage, extends tyre service life and ensures optimum fuel economy.

Powertrain

The 2016 Great Wall Steed offers two proven powertrain choices upgraded to achieve Euro V emissions compliance: a fuel-injected 2.4-litre petrol engine and a 2.0-litre common rail turbo-diesel. The powerful turbo-diesel produces a healthy 110 kilowatts of power arriving at 4000 rpm and a user-friendly 310 Newton-metres of torque available from 1800-2800 rpm. Matched to a six-speed manual transmission, the Euro V-compliant turbo-diesel Steed delivers good fuel economy of 9.0 litres per 100km and a range of more than 800 kilometres.

The engine’s torque delivery has been tuned to deliver greater responsiveness, faster torque delivery and better acceleration feel. The turbo-diesel is available in 4x2 and 4x4. For customers who prefer petrol, the Steed is available with a 2.4-litre multi-point fuel injection engine, delivering 100kW and 205Nm. Matched with a five-speed manual transmission, the petrol is available only in 4x2.

Both engines are built to help the new Great Wall Steed Dual Cab tackle Australian conditions and become the trade tool of choice for Australian farmers and tradespeople. The Steed boasts a payload of 1010kg and a braked towing capacity of 2000kg and comes standard with four heavy duty tie-down points in the lined tub.

The new Steed range is available in five colours, all of which are available at no extra charge:
