Fuelled by feedback and demand from the Australian market, Isuzu UTE have refined the D-MAX and MU-X range for 2018. The 18MY Isuzu UTE range, bolstered by a number of upgrades, refinements and safety inclusions, is in a prime position to continue its growth within the two most highly-competitive segments of the market — the 1-Tonne Ute and Large SUV segments.

In particular the D-MAX has been growing in popularity thanks to its durability, reliability, towing and serious off- road ability. The latest enhancements have looked to bolster this ‘fit for purpose’ position specifically for Australian conditions, while some key refinements to ride and interior look to cater for the demand for more car-like comfort. Essentially, the 18MY models will look to increase our current customer satisfaction as well as attract a wider audience.

The top of the range Isuzu D-MAX

Long established as a marque for the workman, for 2018 Isuzu UTE has refined the flagship ute offering — expanding the D-MAX range to officially include an upgraded D-MAX LS-T Crew Cab, boasting premium features previously not part of the Isuzu UTE range. Positioned at the driver seeking the perfect balance between ‘tough and rugged’ utilitarian and passenger friendly versatility and refinement, the 18MY Isuzu D-MAX LS-T is positioned to be on the shortlist of buyers considering a premium 1-tonne ute.

Straight off the back of a plethora of major-upgrades in 2017, the 18MY D-MAX range is now headlined by the flagship LS-T, featuring many of the standout features and amenities as found on the MU-X LS-T; 18” wheels with Highway-Terrain (HT) tyres, Sat Nav, roof rails and a Passive Entry and Start System (PESS) on 4x4 LS-T only. Just like the rest of the range the 18MY D-MAX LS-T is powered by Isuzu’s exclusive 3-litre turbo diesel 4JJ1-TC engine — generating 130kW and 430Nm — paired with the smooth Aisin-built AWR6B45 6-Speed Automatic Transmission. Respecting that not all owners necessarily take their ute off-road — instead preferring a ute for the unmatched family-friendly space and versatility, the flagship LS-T is available in two drivetrains; two-wheel drive or through Isuzu’s “Terrain Command” 4WD Select System.

Borrowing styling cues from the flagship MU-X LS-T, the 18MY D-MAX LS-T has been tastefully refined with the additions of a new premium leather accented interior, featuring rich genuine perforated leather (on body contact areas) which is proven to breathe better than non-perforated — plus additional accents of polyurethane leatherette on the hard wearing bolsters and rests. The dash, glovebox and armrest are trimmed in soft touch leatherette, door handles finished in chrome and the air vents and window switches finished in gloss black for a premium look — these soft-touch refinements can also be found inside the D-MAX LS-M and LS-U variants.

Another interior update for the D-MAX 18MY LS-M, LS-U and LS-T variants is the addition of two 2.1-Amp USB charge points; one in the dash, and one in the rear console. This update is fuelled by customer feedback on charging personal mobile devices whilst on the road, and can also be found across the entire MU-X range.

Comfort Suspension

With more and more families turning towards utes for their daily drive, Isuzu engineers have developed a new 3-span leaf spring setup for SX, LS-U and LS-T Crew Cab ute variants — a suspension tune developed with Australian customer feedback in mind. Through the use of stronger and lighter materials this new setup not only improves the ride, comfort and handling — the setup has proven to not compromise the payload capacity versus the 17MY 5 leaf spring setup.

Increased D-MAX GVM

Along with the 18MY suspension upgrade for Crew Cab ute variants, Isuzu Engineers have reassessed the Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) capacity of the entire 18MY D-MAX range — increasing the GVM on 4x2 models to 2,950kg and the GVM on 4x4 models to 3,050kg. This improvement increases the payload capacity of all models by 100kg in comparison to 17MY models. This upgrade gives the D-MAX 4x2 low-ride SX Single Cab Chassis class-leading payload capacity of 1,349kg.

Safety Upgrades

According to feedback from owners, half on average purchase an Isuzu for the purpose of towing — highlighting the strength and versatility of the D-MAX and MU-X powertrain. With that in mind, Isuzu engineers have added Trailer Sway Control (TSC) across all 18MY models (excluding the D-MAX 4x2 low-ride SX Single Cab Chassis manual), improving on the active safety system offerings. Stemming from the vehicle’s Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system, the TSC system monitors trailer movement through the ESC sensors and modulates throttle and brake inputs to individual wheels — bringing the towed trailer under control if unsolicited sway is detected.

Safety has always been at the forefront of Isuzu vehicle development. Previously reserved for LS variants, all 18MY D-MAX ute models now feature a rear bumper to improve occupant collision protection, along with a reversing camera as standard for increased safety and visibility — however both remain optional on cab chassis models due to the nature of the tray.

Extended Service Intervals across range

As a testament to the immense confidence we have in building durable, reliable and efficient vehicles, every Isuzu vehicle is backed by the Isuzu UTE Australia Service Plus Program which includes a 5 year warranty, 5 years Roadside Assistance and 5 year/75,000 kilometre Capped Price Servicing program – which adds further peace of mind when it comes to protecting your investment and your wallet.

Through continual refinement of our Isuzu D-MAX and MU-X, Isuzu engineers have structured a highly competitive Capped Price Servicing Program for 18MY - onwards vehicles, featuring a 12 month or 15,000 kilometre interval. In fact, over the course of 60 months the cost of ownership is one of the most economical within the 1-tonne ute and ute-based SUV class.

The new 17MY Isuzu MU-X sets a striking balance of sporty good looks with a tough and rugged stance that typifies the versatile purpose of this 7 seat SUV.

The new design grille blends harmoniously with the new design headlight assembly to give the new MU-X’s fascia an assertive appearance in keeping with the overall design philosophy, while new Bi-LED projector headlights (which are much brighter than the previous model’s projector headlights), provide increased driver visibility when driving at night.

The new Bi-LED projector headlights are also equipped with an auto-levelling feature, which automatically adjust the headlight beam to the appropriate angle whenever the MU-X is loaded with a complete complement of passengers, heavy cargo and towing. This ensures excellent driver vision when driving at night, and increases safety for all road users by reducing oncoming glare. New design front fog lights compliment LS-U & LS-T variants for increased driver visibility at night or during inclement weather.

Complementing the fresh exterior look, is a stylish new design 18-inch alloy wheel with All-Terrain (AT) tyres for all LS-U and LS-T variants, with LS-M spec MU-X riding on new design 16-inch alloys with AT tyres.

The MU-X’s interior styling has also been extensively refined, with the passenger cabin now featuring a dual-tone dashboard with soft touch finishes, new chrome and piano-black trimming, and new soft touch armrests and console coverings. In addition, new quilted design leather-accented seats feature in LS-T variants.

Further improving the value proposition, LS-U and LS-T variants now receive an 8-inch touch screen display audio system with in-built SatNav and reversing camera, and LS-M variants now include a 7-inch touch screen display audio system with reversing camera.

Upping the audio-pleasure stakes, all 17MY MU-X cabins now house eight speakers delivering crisp, clear audio for all occupants: two roof mounted speakers in addition to the two front door mounted speakers, two dash mounted tweeters and two rear door mounted speakers. LS-T variants also boast a fold-down roof-mounted 10-inch DVD screen which can be easily viewed by both the second and third row occupants. The remote control unit allows both the DVD and audio functions to be controlled from anywhere in the vehicle.

USB ports number three in all variants of the MU-X. Two are located in the front dash and one in the rear, providing convenient charge points for mobile phones and other portable devices with USB charge ports. While for heavier-duty power requirements, there are three 12 Volt power outlets, located in the centre dash console, glovebox and rear cargo area.

The MU-X’s cabin offers a practical (12 cup holders and 18 storage solutions!) and comfortable environment with excellent leg, head and shoulder room for all passengers – and clever folding-rolling second row seats make passenger access to the third row seating a breeze.

Further improvements to NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) comfort levels have been achieved in the 17MY MU-X, thanks to the addition of new sound and vibration insulation across the vehicle, including to the dash console, floor transmission tunnel, windscreen seal, firewall and floorpan – providing an even more composed driving experience for all occupants.

The power within - “Pumped Up” engine with more torque

Driving the 17MY MU-X’s arrival is Isuzu’s new “Pumped Up” engine – a Euro5 emission compliant 3.0 litre 4JJ1-TC Hi-Power turbo-diesel powerplant. Recently introduced, this new engine is a world first for Isuzu. It was developed exclusively for the Australian market after exhaustive local research and testing into the use and demands of existing Australian Isuzu owners, and no other market currently features an Isuzu 3.0 litre Euro5 compliant engine.

Maximum torque output has been increased to 430Nm from the previous engine’s output of 380Nm to meet the demands of Australian operating conditions and our customer’s expectations.

In comparison to the previous engine, 380Nm of torque (previous maximum) is now on tap from 1,700 - 3,500 rpm – which is 100 rpm lower and continues 700 rpm higher – meaning the same engine rpm provides more power and the same torque can be generated at lower engine rpm.

By producing more power at lower engine rpm, and more torque, the new “Pumped Up” MU-X is not only more fuel efficient and produces less toxic exhaust emissions – but still deliver Isuzu’s famous “tree-stump-pulling grunt”, that’s fit for the biggest of jobs.

A new variable geometry turbocharger with intercooler, and ultra-high pressure common rail fuel injection ensures precise and efficient fuel delivery, and a newly designed differential has also been introduced to handle the increase in engine torque and ensure that Isuzu’s legendary durability and reliability lives on.

Revealing the excellence of Isuzu’s diesel technology know-how, the 17MY MU-X’s 4JJ1-TC Hi-Power Euro5 turbo-diesel engine has a number of new components:

  1. New design pistons
  2. New design fuel injectors
  3. New design fuel supply pump
  4. New VGS turbo-charger
  5. New larger Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler
  6. New design EGR bypass valve
  7. New ceramic glow plugs
  8. Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS)
  9. Diesel Particulate Defuser (DPD)

All these new features culminate in a more fuel efficient and low emission turbo-diesel engine that harnesses Isuzu’s century of diesel engine manufacturing, and continues to maintain Isuzu’s reputation for outstanding reliability and low cost of ownership.

“Pumped Up” transmissions designed and built for purpose

With a new Aisin AWR6B45 6-Speed Automatic Transmission with “lock-up” torque converter, drivers of the MU-X are provided the most efficient gear selection to suit a wide variety of driving conditions – further improving fuel efficiency and lowering CO2 emissions. This automatic transmission features a “adaptive learning” function, which automatically adjusts the gear changes to suit your driving style and circumstances, whether it be towing or carrying a load, driving in undulating regions or cruising at highway speeds – thereby improving both driveability and fuel efficiency.

A sequential shift mode allows the driver to select gears on demand, giving the driver the same level of control as in a manual transmission, which is extremely beneficial in off-road environments. The new Aisin AWR6B45 6-Speed Automatic Transmission also incorporates the Slip Control System Lock-up Clutch (Lock-up Torque Converter) which raises transmission efficiency in the 2nd to 6th gears (all gears except 1st and reverse) when a certain speed is reached, and improves fuel efficiency. The lock-up clutch will be released when the accelerator pedal is pressed forcefully.

This system provides increased transmission efficiency and fuel economy, and automatically operates to reduce torque converter slip loss during moderate acceleration at low speed. It also increases the efficiency effects of engine fuel-cut when coasting.

Also on offer is a 6-Speed manual transmission designed exclusively by Isuzu. It features “close ratio” gears and “triple cone” synchronizers to provide easier gear selection and long service life. This new 6-speed manual transmission is also linked to a Gear-Shift Indicator on the driver’s instrument panel which intelligently displays the recommended gear position for optimum fuel efficiency.

Excellent towing performance

Thanks to the abundance of low-down torque on tap, the MU-X makes for a confident towing partner – be it a boat, caravan, horse float or trailer. All MU-X variants offer 3-tonne towing capacity (braked), and thanks to the under-stressed engine calibration, delivers exceptional fuel economy even when under load. Reversing cameras (with guide lines) on all models now make hitching up a breeze.

A focus on safety

All variants of the MU-X are equipped with a reversing camera and Rear Park Assist (RPA). They offer an extensive and impressive level of occupant protection; six airbags (dual front, side and full-length curtain), 4-channel 4-sensor Anti-skid Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), as well as Hill Start Assist (HSA) and Hill Decent Control (HDC).

MU-X cabins are constructed from High Tensile Steel for outstanding strength and rigidity to create a resilient passenger safety cell. To further enhance this design criteria, Isuzu engineers have made use of tailor-blank welding construction techniques in those areas that warrant additional strength for increased occupant protection, including anti-intrusion door beams.

There are height adjustable head restraints for all occupants and dual pre-tensioners with load limiters for the front seatbelts, along with ISO-FIX child restraint points in the second row.

Off-road ready

Front independent double wishbone suspension with coil springs, gas shocks and stabiliser bar allows the driver positive feedback and steering control regardless of the terrain underfoot, and a rear five-link suspension configuration also with coil springs, stabiliser bar and gas shocks provide superior stability and generous wheel articulation when traversing off road.

All 4x4 variants of the MU-X offer an impressive level of ground clearance, affording these models true rugged off-road performance. For added protection, 4x4 models are also equipped with a 2mm steel front skid plate, steel sump and transfer case guards plus protection for the leading edge of the fuel tank when travelling off-road.

Further confidence is provided with Hill Descent Control (HDC) which assists driver control by controlling the vehicle’s brakes to maintain a constant low speed when descending steep slopes, or on slippery off-road surfaces. Increased driver control means increased safety, and importantly, HDC is offered on all Isuzu MU-X variants, including 4x2 models.

Perfect for fleet

A robust ladder frame chassis ensures long term durability when exposed to harsh driving environments – making the MU-X ideal for heavy-duty fleet applications. Flat-fold seating creates a cargo space for the biggest of loads of up to 1,830 litres, and with competitive pricing, low maintenance costs and outstanding fuel economy, the MU-X presents cost-conscious businesses with a smart alternative when it comes to satisfying their fleet requirements. Isuzu’s ultra-reliable 3.0L Isuzu turbo-diesel engine completes the business case ensuring downtime becomes a thing of the past.

Isuzu UTE Australia (IUA) has bolstered its offerings across both its D-MAX ute and MU-X SUV range with the introduction of three new 4x2 variants. Available in dealerships this month, the D-MAX ute range will be enhanced with the addition of a 4x2 SX Space Cab Ute High-Ride and 4x2 SX Crew Cab Chassis High-Ride, both available in 5-speed auto transmission only.

IUA is keen to maintain its status as the fastest growing brand in the 1-tonne ute segment, and regards the new 4x2 D-MAX variants another resource to increase its market share in arguably Australia’s most competitive automotive segment. IUA’s 4x2 D-MAX range has enjoyed a significant uplift in the sales charts this year – more than doubling 2014’s volume – the result of resurgence in both fleet and private buyer purchases. The introduction of these two new 4x2 versions takes the total variants now available in the D-MAX range to 25.

Following on from the success of its 4x4 stablemate, IUA has also introduced a 4x2 edition of the ‘top of the range’ seven-seat MU-X LS-T. Available in auto transmission only, the 4x2 LS-T retains a class-leading three-tonne towing capability (braked) and five-star ANCAP safety rating. These new models all feature Isuzu’s exclusive 3.0-litre turbo diesel engine and are supported by ‘Service Plus’ – Isuzu UTE’s five-year/130,000km warranty with five years roadside assistance and three-year Capped Price Servicing program.

To launch these new models, Isuzu UTE is offering special introductory ‘drive-away’ pricing for a limited time only on the following vehicles:

  • D-MAX 4x2 SX D-MAX Space Cab Ute $31,990 Drive-away (RRP $34,300)
  • MU-X 4x2 LS-T AT $43,990 Drive-away (RRP $46,700)
  • D-MAX 4x2 Crew Cab Chassis RRP $36,100

Isuzu UTE Australia has introduced a limited edition D-MAX to its one-tonne ute line-up, the 2015 X-RUNNER. On sale now at $51,990 drive-away - just 360 units of the X-RUNNER will be available.  Based on an Isuzu D-MAX 4x4 LS-Terrain, the X-RUNNER takes the standard interior features of the D-MAX to the next level, with the addition of auto climate control air-conditioning, Sat-Nav system, Rear Park Assist and reverse camera. The X-RUNNER also receives the convenience Isuzu’s new Passive Entry & Start System (PESS) – which makes entry and exit of the vehicle a breeze when you’ve got your hands full. A dark-grey interior trim exclusive to the X-RUNNER adds another unique touch.

The exterior of the X-RUNNER also makes a statement. Available in the choice of two striking limited-edition metallic colours - pearlescent white and lapis blue, with unique contrasting striping and decals, the X-RUNNER also turns heads with an aggressive front and rear body kit, alloy sports bar and tub liner.

The X-RUNNER is covered by Isuzu UTE’s five-year ‘bumper to bumper’ warranty and five-year Roadside Assistance and has a five-star ANCAP safety rating. And to make the X-RUNNER an even sweeter deal, Isuzu UTE has just introduced a new Capped Price Servicing (CPS) program to complement their class leading warranty. ‘Isuzu UTE Service Plus’ provides customers with the ultimate peace of mind and a consistent pricing structure which means no surprises, and no need to ‘shop around’ for the best vehicle servicing deal.

In reality how many four-wheel drive vehicles actually leave the bitumen? The figures vary depending on the source … but we don’t believe enough. So Isuzu UTE Australia has introduced a new initiative to help their owners to get the most out of their Isuzu vehicle in a safe and structured environment under expert tutelage – The I-VENTURE CLUB. The I-VENTURE CLUB offers Isuzu owners the opportunity to join excursions to some of Australia’s most breathtaking and challenging off-road destinations, with the support of qualified 4x4 instructors to teach them the skills and techniques required to handle the toughest cross-country terrain.

“The I-VENTURE CLUB is a new way to experience four-wheel driving – It’s an exclusive Isuzu owners club that brings together like minded people and encourages them to utilise the adventure that is inherent in all of our vehicles,” said Dave Harding, Isuzu UTE Australia’s Assistant General Manager – Marketing & PR.  “The development of the I-VENTURE CLUB was a result of enquiry we received from our customers who were searching for somewhere safe to learn the ins-and-outs of off-road driving without damaging their vehicles, or embarrassing themselves by getting stuck somewhere at high tide!” he added. The I-VENTURE CLUB has ‘day-trip’ events planned across all states of Australia this year, with longer overnight and weekend journeys, as well as ‘special interest’ events also in the pipeline.

“The I-VENTURE CLUB will offer different experiences to different customers – from the ‘first time out’ novice to the experienced hardcore off-roader … and via our dedicated website it will become a hub where our owners can get together to share their stories, pick up some professional advice and ultimately use their vehicles for what they were designed for – and that’s adventure,” Harding said. Information on the current I-VENTURE trips available can be found at www.iventureclub.com.au.
