The latest independent safety assessments from vehicle safety authority, ANCAP, have demonstrated the ongoing commitment from vehicle brands to maintain 5 star standards against increasing criteria.

The Mazda CX-8 and Volvo XC40 have both achieved a 5 star ANCAP safety rating – the first models to be tested and rated by ANCAP to the latest, most stringent 2018 assessment protocols.

“The hurdles have been raised significantly for vehicles tested from 2018,” said ANCAP Chief Executive, James Goodwin.

“We now test and rate against four key pillars of assessment, and across these we have implemented a range of enhancements to encourage vehicle manufacturers to improve the active and passive safety elements of their models.”
“Most notably, we’re looking at the performance and effectiveness of active safety assist technologies, and the ability of a vehicle to protect a broader range of occupants, including children and females.”

“Parents of young children will know that not all vehicles have the ability to safely fit child restraints in all seating positions. To assist, child restraint installation now forms part of each rating.”

“We are assessing the correct installation of a range of commonly available restraints – from newborn to 10 years – in each of the rear seating positions, and 6 year and 10 year child dummies now feature in our physical crash tests.”

Vulnerable road user safety is also enhanced with added emphasis placed on avoiding crashes with pedestrians and cyclists, at day-time and night – over 100 different test scenarios.

“It’s encouraging to see Mazda and Volvo set the standard, with their CX-8 and XC40 models being the first to step up and achieve 5 stars against our increased test standards,” Goodwin said.

“Good levels of performance were achieved by the CX-8 in the area of Child Occupant Protection, with our assessment engineers praising its ability to safely accommodate child restraints in all five rear seating
positions.”

The 5 star ANCAP safety rating applies to all Mazda CX-8 variants.

“The XC40 performed well across all areas of assessment, offering emergency lane keeping functionality and the full range of autonomous emergency braking systems,” said Goodwin.

All-wheel-drive variants of the Volvo XC40 have achieved a 5 star ANCAP safety rating. The two-wheel-drive T4 has not been assessed and is ‘unrated’.

Volvo Car Australia announced the pricing for its XC40 compact luxury SUV ahead of the official Australian launch in April.

The XC40 is Volvo’s first car on its new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) and includes a range of ground-breaking technologies first introduced on its 90 and 60 Series siblings based on Volvo’s larger Scalable Product Architecture (SPA).

Volvo’s approach to safety and user experience builds on a philosophy it calls Circle of Life: a constant improvement of standards and technologies, based on consumer insights and real life data.

Safety and driver assistance features offered on the XC40 include Volvo’s semiautonomous Pilot Assist system, the latest generation of City Safety, Run-off Road protection and mitigation, Cross Traffic Alert with auto brake and the 360° Camera that helps drivers manoeuvre their car into tight parking spaces. These and other technologies make the XC40 one of the best equipped compact luxury SUVs. Whilst the XC40 is more compact that its XC90 and XC60 siblings, at 1863mm wide and 1652mm tall it is still larger than most of its competitors in the segment.

XC40 arrives onto the Australian shores, having recently been awarded European Car of the Year 2018.

Performance

At launch the XC40 comes with two powertrains. The petrol-powered T5 delivers 185 kW and 350Nm of torque. The diesel driven D4 offers 140kW and 400Nm of torque.

All Volvo XC40 variants have the latest Drive-E engine technology.

However, it is not just under the hood that the XC40 delivers healthy performance. The new Clean Zone two-zone climate system removes harmful pollutants and particles from outside the cabin to deliver Scandinavian-fresh air on the inside.

Volvo Cars’ driver infotainment system (Sensus) with smartphone integration for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is also available.

The Volvo XC40 will be available in two variants - Momentum and the sporty and dynamic R-Design.

Volvo’s new XC60 mid-size SUV has been awarded the maximum 5 star ANCAP safety rating by independent vehicle safety authority, ANCAP, achieving class-leading scores in two key areas of assessment.

“The XC60 passed the assessment achieving not only 5 stars, but taking out the highest scores to date in the areas of Adult Occupant Protection and Safety Assist,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, James Goodwin. The XC60 scored 98 per cent for Adult Occupant Protection and 95 per cent for Safety Assist.

“High levels of protection were recorded for occupants in all four crash tests, with only the chest of the rear passenger in the full width test and the lower legs of the driver in the frontal offset test seeing points deducted. All body regions received full scores in the side impact and pole tests.”

“This model is fitted as standard with an autonomous emergency braking system which operates at high and low speeds and can detect pedestrians. Performance testing of this system earned the vehicle full points. It also has an intelligent speed assistance system which uses a camera to recognise and inform the driver of the local speed limit,” Goodwin said.

This 5 star ANCAP safety rating applies to all D4, D5, T5 and T6 variants. The T8 hybrid is unrated.

Volvo Cars, the premium car manufacturer, has further expands its line-up of SUVs with the launch of its new XC40 small premium SUV in Milan, Italy.

The new XC40 is the first model on Volvo Cars’ new modular vehicle architecture (CMA), which will underpin all other upcoming cars in the 40 Series including fully electrified vehicles. Co-developed within Geely, CMA provides the company with the necessary economies of scale for this segment.

From start of production, the XC40 will be available with a D4 diesel or a T5 petrol four-cylinder Drive-E powertrain. The XC40 will also be the first Volvo model to be available with Volvo Cars’ new 3-cylinder engine.

Production of the new XC40 starts in Volvo Cars’ plant in Ghent, Belgium in November.

Volvo Car Australia has announced the pricing for its All-New XC60 luxury SUV ahead of the official Australian launch in October. The All-New XC60 will be available in three variants - Momentum, Inscription and the sporty and dynamic R-Design. The new car replaces Volvo’s highly successful original XC60, which in the nine years since its launch became the bestselling premium mid-sized SUV in Europe, with nearly a million units sold globally. The XC60 represents around 30 per cent of Volvo’s total global sales.

The All-New XC60 is fully loaded with new safety technology making it one of the safest cars on the road. Steer Assist has been added to the ground breaking City Safety system. A new safety system called Oncoming Lane Mitigation uses steer assist to help mitigate head-on collisions. The system works by alerting a driver who has unwittingly wandered out of a driving lane by providing automatic steering assistance, guiding them back into their own lane and out of the path of any oncoming vehicle. This system is active between 60-140 km/h.

Volvo’s Blind Spot Indication System (BLIS) now uses Steer Assist functionality to reduce the risk of lane-changing collisions. Pilot Assist, Volvo’s advanced semi-autonomous driver assistance system, which takes care of steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 130 km/h, is available in the All-New XC60.

Performance

The All-New XC60 comes in a wide range of powertrains. The diesel D4 engine offers 140kW and the D5 with Power Pulse technology delivers 173kW. The petrol-powered T5 delivers 187 kW and the T6, which with both turbo and superchargers attached, delivers 235kW and 400 Nm of torque.

Volvo’s T8 Twin Engine petrol plug-in hybrid comes in at the top of the powertrain range, delivering a combined 300kW and acceleration from 0-100 Km in just 5.3 seconds. All-New Volvo XC60 variants have the latest Drive-E engine technology. However, it is not just under the hood that the All-New XC60 delivers healthy performance. Volvo Cars, the premium car manufacturer, will this month start production of its new XC60 mid-size SUV in Gothenburg, Sweden. The new XC60 will leave the factory 90 years to the month after the first ever Volvo, the ÖV4, saw the light of day on April 14th 1927.

This first Volvo sold a total of 275 vehicles in its life time, which was modest even in those days. The new XC60 replaces one of the best-selling model in Volvo’s 90-year history.

The new XC60 replaces the old

Volvo’s original XC60 became a phenomenon with climbing sales every years since it was first introduced in 2008. Seven years after it was revealed, it became the best-selling premium mid-sized SUV in Europe and in its ninth year it is still the best seller. The current XC60 today represents around 30 per cent of Volvo’s total global sales of 966,000 and this month the number of original XC60’s produced will surpass 1,000,000.

“Volvo is very proud of its history. The past 90 years have been exciting, but the 10 years left until the 100 year anniversary may come to be more exciting as industry focus shifts to autonomous driving, electrification and connectivity,” says Håkan Samuelsson, chief executive of Volvo Cars. “The new XC60 is in many ways the embodiment of these trends.”

The new XC60 is one of the safest cars ever made and offers the latest in safety technology, including the new Oncoming Lane Mitigation system which uses a steer assist to help mitigate head on collisions. Volvo’s semi-autonomous driver assistance system, Pilot Assist, which takes care of steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 130 km/h, is available in the new XC60 as an option.

With the new XC60 now on the market and gradually becoming available for order on markets across the globe, Volvo is set for another record year of sales in 2017.

90 year anniversary

Volvo’s founder Assar Gabrielsson saw an opportunity for car manufacturing in Sweden after having observed the growing auto industries in the U.S and Europe from his position within sales at the Swedish ball bearing manufacturer SKF, a supplier to the car industry. Pointing towards Sweden’s readily accessible steel, cheap labour and skilled engineers, he managed to convince SKF to invest in a spin-off car business called AB Volvo.

The first mass-produced Swedish car was quite a conventional vehicle with elements of American car design, a wooden frame made of ash tree and beech, a 1.9 litre side valve engine and artillery wheels with wooden spokes. Only one colour combination was available: dark blue with black fenders. Despite all these changes over the last 90 years, one thing has remained the same, the company’s commitment to making the world’s safest cars.

Leading independent vehicle safety advocate, the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP), released its latest round of safety ratings covering the Australian and New Zealand markets. Top levels of safety performance were seen with the Audi A5, Volvo S90 and Hyundai Ioniq each achieving the maximum 5 star ANCAP safety ratings. Falling behind however was the New Zealands old Hyundai i20 achieving a 4 star ANCAP safety rating.

“A range of brands and vehicle categories are covered with these ratings and the majority performed very well across all areas of our assessment,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, James Goodwin. “The Hyundai i20 fell down in the areas of Child Occupant Protection and Safety Assist with important active safety technologies such as autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and blind spot monitoring not available.”

“Autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and reversing collision avoidance are however standard on all variants of the new hybrid model introduced by Hyundai – the Ioniq. Lane support systems and a manual speed limiter are also standard features adding to its top safety credentials.”

“As expected, the Volvo S90 features a range of advanced safety technologies and its standard-fit autonomous emergency braking system performed extremely well, with complete collision avoidance in all scenarios and at all test speeds.”

“High scores were also achieved by the Audi A5 which is equipped with an ‘active’ bonnet and advanced AEB system which can detect and avoid collisions with pedestrians,” said Goodwin. “The safety specification of S90 models sold locally does however differ to those sold in Europe with no driver knee airbag. Specification of the A5 also differs between Australia and New Zealand with adaptive cruise control and lane support systems provided as standard for New Zealand consumers yet optional for Australians. It is disappointing we continue to see this happen across brands,” Goodwin said.

IntelliSafe Assist – Pilot Assist

Volvo continues its leadership in safety and autonomous driving by introducing the second generation of Pilot Assist in the All-New S90. This system combines the functionalities of Lane Keep Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control and further improves this so the vehicle is kept in the centre of the lane with light steering adjustments (driver must keep their hand on the steering wheel). It also has steering assistance available at speeds above 50 km/h and without a car in front. The Pilot Assist now works up to 130 km/h.

City Safety – Large Animal Detection

Volvo City Safety which currently detects pedestrians and cyclists, has been enhanced in the All-New S90 to detect large animals (e.g. horses and cows). The radar/camera unit can detect large animals standing on the road or slowly moving across it with the side towards the car. If a collision is judged to be imminent and the driver does not react, the car will brake itself with a maximum speed reduction of 15 km/h, so as to avoid or mitigate a collision.

Run-Off Road Mitigation

Volvo’s Run-Off Road system uses data from the radar/camera unit and visible road markings and road edges to determine if road departure is imminent. The Run-Off Road Mitigation system intervenes by helping the driver steer in a path that will reduce the risk of road departure – and if this is not enough, it will also reduce the speed of the car. Run-Off Road Mitigation is active between 65-140 km/h, day and night.

Should a road departure be unavoidable, prepared front seat belts and energy absorbing seat cushions will offer the driver and front passenger maximum protection.

New PowerPulse Engine Technology

PowerPulse technology is a brand new Volvo technology that allows for quicker acceleration from standstill, by reducing the turbo lag found in Diesel engines when the accelerator is pressed quickly at low revs in first or second gear. This is done by adding a small electric compressor which releases air into the exhaust system before the turbocharger – thus making the turbocharger’s turbine wheel start to spin instantly and thereby also the compressor wheel.

Swedish car manufacturer Volvo has told a NSW parliamentary inquiry that self-driving cars could be on sale in NSW within five years if local road laws are changed.

Appearing before the NSW Staysafe Committee’s public inquiry into driverless cars and road safety, Volvo said advances in technology meant that fully autonomous self-driving Volvos could be on sale by 2021, and could be safely driven on selected roads like the M5 and M7.

Volvo has called on the state government to conduct a self-driving car trial in Sydney before 2021 as part of ongoing efforts to address traffic congestion in Australia’s largest city. A self-driving car can accelerate, brake and steer itself without intervention by the driver.

“Volvo believes it is feasible to conduct a safe driverless car trial in Sydney on a connected road system like the M5, M7, M2 and M1,” said Kevin McCann, Managing Director of Volvo Car Australia. “This would pave the way for changes to the road laws prior to self-driving cars going on sale in NSW. This is possible within five years if local roads laws are changed to accommodate the cars.

“Having self-driving cars on our major roads in Sydney is not science fiction. It’s reality, and it is approaching very fast. Volvo and other manufacturers have developed self-driving technology and safety features to a very advanced level.

“Major cities around the world, like London and Los Angeles, are planning for it right now. Sydney is Australia’s largest city with the most traffic, so it makes sense for the state government and transport agencies to start planning now for the technology that could be on our roads by 2021,” McCann said.

In 2017 Volvo will run the world’s largest self-driving car trial on the Swedish city of Gothenburg involving up to 100 XC90 Volvos being driven by ordinary motorists. Last November Volvo was a key player in the first limited trial of driverless cars in Adelaide.

Volvo Cars will work together with Microsoft, the leading platform and productivity company, to jointly develop next generation automotive technologies. The two companies revealed how Microsoft HoloLens, the world’s first fully untethered holographic computer, might be used in future to redefine how customers first encounter and explore a car, as well as how cars might be bought and sold in future.

Areas of future collaboration between the two companies could include autonomous driving technologies and the utilisation of data generated from connected cars to create new services. Today’s HoloLens demonstration was conducted at Microsoft’s global headquarters in Redmond, USA, and showed how mixed reality might be used by customers to configure cars in three dimensions. With HoloLens, a powerful, wearable computer, holograms are mixed into the physical world.

“HoloLens offers the freedom to create a bespoke experience which customers can steer themselves. Imagine using mixed reality to choose the type of car you want – to explore the colours, rims, or get a better understanding of the features, services and options available,” said Björn Annwall, Senior Vice President, Marketing Sales and Service at Volvo Cars. He added HoloLens technology might also liberate dealers from more traditional sales environments and allow them to take a car configurator out on the road in small Pop-Up stores, shopping malls or on the high street, opening up new sales channels and introducing cars to a far larger potential audience.

At the HoloLens demonstration, participating journalists were also given a mixed reality preview of Volvo’s new S90 premium sedan, which will be unveiled in reality at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. The event offered an indication of the potential of mixed reality to transform the relationship between the customer and the car. Journalists were able to experience Volvo’s new sedan and its latest autonomous driving technology in 3D before the car has even been built and launched.

“We are thrilled to be working with Volvo Cars to reimagine what is possible in car design, discovery and purchasing. We are excited to be at this intersection of technology and human-centric design with Volvo,” Scott Erickson, Senior Director, Microsoft HoloLens at Microsoft Corp.

The demonstration marks the beginning of longer term cooperation between Volvo and Microsoft that will embrace a range of new technologies, all of which have implications for the automotive industry. One area of focus will be autonomous driving. Volvo Cars is a pioneer in car safety and is leading the way when it comes to connected cars and autonomous driving. It has announced a programme called Drive-Me in which 100 self-driving and connected cars will be given to real customers on real roads around the Swedish city of Gothenburg by 2017, the world’s largest autonomous driving experiment.

Other areas of cooperation are expected to include how information gathered by cars and their drivers can be used to enhance the driving experience and the possibility of using predictive analytics to improve safety.
