Hyundai has unveiled its all-new Veloster and Veloster Turbo models at the North American International Auto Show. The fresh design was a collaborative effort of Hyundai designers from Seoul, South Korea and the U.S. design centre in Irvine, California. The new Veloster features a comprehensive exterior and interior redesign, powertrain enhancements, and a bevy of new and improved infotainment and connectivity features. The 2019 Veloster begins production in March 2018 in Ulsan, Korea, with Australian market availability in the second half of 2018.
“Our new 2019 Veloster represents an even more compelling offering for young and young-at-heart automotive enthusiasts with more expressive design, involving dynamics and cutting-edge infotainment features,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president of Product, Corporate and Digital Planning at Hyundai Motor America. “When combined with Hyundai’s outstanding value and efficiency, the new Veloster is sure to attract a progressive new group of enthusiast buyers.”
The Veloster merges the design appeal of a sport coupe with the versatility of an additional passenger side rear door in an asymmetrical two-plus-one configuration for easier rear-seat access. From the front, available LED headlights and LED Daytime Running Lights flank a striking new grille design. Functional air curtains add both a visual design cue and an active aerodynamic function. Hyundai’s signature cascade grille shape has morphed into a strong, three-dimensional design that sets the sport coupe apart.
Much of the redesign is derived from enhanced proportions and volume; the new shape clearly conveys focused dynamic performance, even standing still. Its stance is more muscular, with higher-volume fenders and wheel arches for a more planted appearance. The cowl point and A-pillar are further rearward and now connect the hood line and belt line into an integrated, powerful gesture. Available 18-inch alloy wheels aggressively fill the wheelhouse openings. Further, the roofline has been lowered for a unique profile and a distinctive coupe-inspired essence. The fender line is also more coupe-like, and the rear now has a more aggressive integrated diffuser design. Available LED taillights help complete the rear view with a high-tech appearance.
Also available is a full darkened roof treatment for a high-contrast performance appearance. Veloster’s dynamic rear design has a distinctive glass hatch and center-fascia chrome exhaust tips, with a single outlet for the 2.0 litre model and dual-outlets for the Turbo model.
The asymmetrical design carries through to the interior, with a driver-focused layout and on the Turbo model, a contrasting colour environment that visually separates the driving cockpit. Each trim level has unique colours, materials, and accents, further differentiating each model with varying hues and textures.
2.0 LITRE ENGINE
The Veloster 2.0 litre 4-cylinder engine uses the Atkinson-cycle for superior efficiency and lower emissions.
The 2.0 litre engine delivers a peak output of 110kW at 6,200 rpm (estimated) and maximum torque of 179Nm at 4,500 rpm (estimated). The Nu 2.0-litre also features Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing, an electronic throttle control, variable induction and innovative anti-friction coatings. The engine is coupled to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission. Three driver-selectable modes include Normal, Sport, and Smart, according to changing driver preferences.
1.6 LITRE TURBOCHARGED ENGINE
The 1.6 litre turbocharged, direct-injected four-cylinder engine produces 150kW at 6,000 rpm (estimated) and 264Nm. of torque from 1,500-4,500 rpm (estimated). In addition, there is an over-boost function that raises peak torque output to 274Nm under maximum acceleration. Engine tuning maximises low- and mid-range torque, for optimum acceleration under daily driving conditions.
Veloster Turbo is paired with either a standard six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT). Both transmissions were developed in-house by Hyundai. The Veloster Turbo seven-speed dual-clutch transmission features steering wheel-mounted paddle-shifters and SHIFTRONIC® transmission gear control. In addition, all Veloster Turbo models feature Active Sound Design, which enhances intake and exhaust powertrain sound character inside the cabin for a more visceral driving experience, especially during spirited driving. Turbo models also offer three selectable driving modes, including Normal, Sport and Smart, according to driver preferences for engine, transmission and steering feel.
TORQUE VECTORING CONTROL
All Veloster models offer Torque Vectoring Control (TVC). This active cornering feature utilising capabilities from the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and powertrain control systems, allows Veloster to improve dynamic cornering during more enthusiastic driving. TVC uses wheel-speed sensors coupled with ESC algorithms to apply precise braking force to the inside front wheel during spirited cornering. This active braking redirects power to the outside front wheel in the turn, reducing wheelspin for enhanced cornering grip and corner-exit acceleration. Overall, this provides Veloster drivers with an incremental margin of cornering precision during enthusiastic driving.
Furthermore, Veloster Turbo features a quicker-ratio steering rack and revised steering calibration to match.
DUAL CLUTCH TRANSMISSION (DCT)
Hyundai’s EcoShift DCT takes the benefits of a manual transmission, such as low fuel consumption, and blends these with automatic transmission benefits, such as high comfort levels and driving ease. In addition, the DCT enables direct connection for high efficiency and uninterrupted torque transfer during shifts. The DCT also incorporates Hyundai’s Hillstart Assist Control (HAC), designed to minimise rolling backwards on steep ascents.
TURBO MODEL SPORT-TUNED DYNAMICS
Veloster Turbo models are fitted with a McPherson strut front suspension, coil springs, gas shock absorbers and front stabiliser bar. The rear suspension is a lightweight independent multi-link design with a stabiliser bar to further control body roll. The rear suspension uses gas-pressurised shock absorbers for ride comfort with excellent control. Veloster features electric power steering that adjusts assistance to changing driving conditions while improving fuel economy over a conventional steering system. 18-inch alloy wheels are available with Michelin® Pilot Sport 4 tyres.
ADVANCED STANDARD SAFETY
Veloster offers advanced active safety features, including standard Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), which uses the car’s front-facing camera to detect an imminent collision and avoid impact or minimise damage by braking autonomously. Three additional systems also utilise the front-view camera to boost safety and convenience: Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), High Beam Assist (HBA) for the available LED headlights, and Driver Attention Warning (DAW).
By sensing road markings, LKA helps to prevent accidental lane departure by helping to steer the vehicle as required. HBA automatically controls the high beam headlights by dimming and illuminating them automatically as needed with approaching traffic, while the Driver Attention Warning system monitors a spectrum of driver-related characteristics to detect driver fatigue or careless driving.
Veloster radar systems also assist with the available Blind-Spot Collision Warning (BCW) to detect approaching vehicles from the rear that may be obscured from view and alert the driver of their presence during lane changes. The Rear Cross-Traffic Collison Warning (RCCW) detects when another vehicle may have entered the car’s rearward path, such as when backing out of a parking spot, and provides a driver alert. Veloster Turbo also offers available Smart Cruise Control for additional driver convenience.
All Veloster models feature a rearview camera with dynamic guidelines for superior parking visibility. Velosters have an exceptional level of standard safety features highlighted by a Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system, which optimally manages ESC (Electronic Stability Control) and the Motor-Driven Power Steering (MDPS).
VSM works to control two effects. The first is when a driver accelerates or brakes on a split-mu surface (slippery on one side, dry pavement on the other) and the vehicle wants to pull in one direction. VSM detects this condition and sends a signal to the MDPS to apply steering assist to counter this force. VSM counters the pull and automatically provides counter steering. VSM reacts the same way during sudden lane changes or fast cornering.
All Veloster models feature six airbags—including dual front, front seat-mounted side-impact, and front and rear side curtain airbags. Velosters also features a state-of-the-art braking package. The package includes four-wheel disc brakes and an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) including Brake Assist, which provides maximum braking force when a panic stop is detected, and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), to automatically adjust the braking force to front and rear axles based on vehicle loading conditions.
ADVANCED INFOTAINMENT AND CONNECTIVITY
Veloster offers a full suite of sophisticated technologies paired with user-friendly functionality to keep passengers informed and entertained. The premium infotainment system offers various advanced connectivity features, including Android Auto™ and Apple CarPlay™. Also available are SiriusXM® Radio, HD Radio and next-generation Blue Link® LTE-powered connectivity. The standard seven-inch color LCD display includes AM/FM/MP3 touchscreen audio, auxiliary input jacks, and Rear View Monitor. The available floating-design eight-inch touchscreen navigation display includes next-generation Blue Link, traffic flow and incident data via HD radio, and Infinity® premium audio with eight speakers, including a subwoofer and Clari-Fi ™ music-restoration technology. Smartphone integration is also included in the premium system.
A Heads-Up Display system is available, projecting a virtual image onto the transparent panel mounted behind the instrument panel and helping the driver to keep his or her eyes on the road. With a generous projected-image size and outstanding luminance, the Heads-Up Display ensures both excellent day- and night-time visibility. Information projected includes speed, navigation instructions, cruise control, Lane Departure Warning and audio system information. When in Sport mode, the system projects more driver-focused information including RPM, KPH and transmission gear. Deployed vertically by a simple touch of a button beside the steering wheel, the display disappears into the dashboard when not in use.
Customers expect to be connected to their electronics at all times, so Veloster comes standard with a multifunction seven-inch touchscreen display. Veloster audio/navigation systems also offer:

Veloster also offers available smartphone wireless charging. To charge a device, simply place a compatible smartphone on the wireless-charging interface located in the center console storage, recharging without the need for cables. The system indicates when the phone has fully charged, reminds occupants to remove their phone when exiting the vehicle, and detects when a foreign object is in the recharging area that could interfere with charging. The system is fully compliant with WPC’s Qi standard for ease of use.

Hyundai has unveiled its high performance Veloster N model at the North American International Motor Show.
Hyundai’s high performance N line-up was developed to make the driver’s heart beat faster whenever they’re behind the wheel. Instead of focusing on outright performance numbers, Hyundai chose to emphasise the N driver’s heartbeats per minute (BPM), rather than revs per minute (RPM). With fun-to-drive character as a top priority, Veloster N has been developed to deliver thrilling cornering ability coupled with everyday sports car drivability and race track capability.
Veloster N was born in Namyang, Hyundai’s global R&D centre, and was thoroughly honed at its Nurburgring-based testing centre in Germany. The Veloster N begins production in September 2018 in Ulsan, Korea.

N EXTERIOR DIFFERENTIATION
From the outside, Veloster N provides an exclusive N-design front fascia and grille with dedicated front air ducts for enhanced brake cooling.
In profile, exclusive N-design rocker side sills and available lightweight 19-inch alloy wheels with a machined-finish dual-spoke star design clearly differentiate the N model from other Veloster variants. Tyres are of the ultra-high performance category, with standard 225/40R18 Michelin Pilot SuperSport for the 18-inch wheel design and exclusive-compound 235/35R19 Pirelli P-Zero for the 19-inch alloy wheel.
The rear of the Veloster N sports a larger N-design rear spoiler, rear fascia design with integrated diffuser, and performance-diameter, high-flow dual exhaust.
N INTERIOR DESIGN
On the inside, Veloster N offers exclusive N-design front cloth sport seats with performance-focused bolstering, N-design steering wheel, shift knob, N-logo door sill plates, and N-design instrument cluster. Interior details are accented by an N performance blue accent theme. As engine speed approaches redline, the N-design centre cluster displays a progressive sequential shift indicator, alerting the driver of an impending shift point for maximum acceleration.
The 2.0 litre direct-injected turbocharged engine delivers 202kW at 6,000 rpm (estimated) and up to 353Nm of torque from 1,450-4,700 rpm (estimated) for responsive, thrilling performance at every RPM range. The turbo system intercooler is isolated from the condenser and radiator for even more efficient cooling of the intake charge. The system also benefits from a two-stage induction system for maximum output at all rpm ranges.
The engine compression ratio is 9.5:1, high for a turbocharged engine.
The high performance engine is backed up by a close-ratio, short-throw six-speed manual transmission with downshift rev-matching capability. The transmission uses carbon-coated synchro rings and gear material reinforcement for smoother operation and lower overall shift force coupled with a positive engagement feel.
The Veloster N clutch also utilises a double-layer facing clutch disc design for increased burst strength and torque capability. In addition, the powertrain sports a multi-mode, high-flow active sport exhaust system with a variable exhaust actuator. In N mode, this system yields an exhilarating engine over-run exhaust crackle during spirited-driving upshifts and rev-matched downshifts.
N SUSPENSION GEOMETRY AND TUNING
Generous torque from the turbocharged powertrain is smoothly and efficiently driven to the tarmac by an N Power Sense Axle design.
Veloster N’s Power Sense axle geometry features a zero-scrub radius for more precise steering, quicker response, and a direct on-centre feel, with increased steering linearity. The geometry is further optimised for linear torque build up and corner-exit precision. Roll angle is also decreased due to a shorter roll-moment arm, resulting in enhanced grip.
The motor-driven power steering system is rack-mounted and secured at three locations for reduced flex and more direct handling, especially during high-performance driving. For even greater body rigidity and suspension precision under high dynamic cornering loads, a specially designed, unobtrusive rear strut brace reinforces the rear multi-link suspension mounting points.
Unique suspension tuning is derived from a multi-mode electronically-controlled suspension with a track-focused N mode available. The suspension uses a load transfer control system that reduces dive during braking, enhances roll control during cornering and reduces rear suspension compression under hard acceleration.
Outstanding cornering is further achieved via an available electronic torque-vectoring N Corner-Carving Limited-slip Differential. The N Corner Carving Differential improves launch performance, reduces acceleration slip understeer and increases maximum cornering speed via precise torque-vectoring.
Veloster N offers a wide range of driver tuning preference via its N Grin Control System drive mode selection system. Modes include Normal, Sport, N, Eco and N Custom, differentiating engine throttle response, engine speed rev-matching, exhaust note, active differential tuning, suspension damping rates, steering feel and yaw-control characteristics.
N Custom mode allows comprehensive driving character preferences via uniquely customisable settings for each tunable driving attribute.
Veloster N available braking offers oversized 13.6-inch performance rotors on the front axle and 12.4-inch rotors on the rear, for confident, heat-dissipating braking performance coupled with a firm pedal feel.

MINI Electric Concept: Urban Driving Fun with zero-emissions.
MINI has once again chosen the Los Angeles Auto Show to stage its vision of future mobility MINI-style with the US premiere of the MINI Electric Concept.
In November 2008 the International Auto Show in California became showcase for the world premiere of the MINI E. For the first time ever the British premium automotive producer presented a purely electrically- driven vehicle, based on the predecessor of the current MINI Hardtop 2 door.
The MINI E was originally produced as a small series of 600 electric vehicles and was field-tested in real, everyday driving situations. The BMW Group incorporated the knowledge drawn from this trial into the development of the BMW i3 among other vehicles.
Electro-mobility MINI-style – to be experienced on the road soon
The design and vehicle concept of the MINI Electric Concept illustrate perfectly how electric mobility in the urban environment can enrich the distinctive charm, individuality and driving experience of a MINI. The MINI E’s powerful electric engine excites with quick reactions at the touch of the accelerator. Its energy is derived from a lithium-ion battery. MINI-typical agility as well as maximum range is, therefore, ensured when driving emission-free.
The MINI Electric Concept epitomizes a distinctive form of electro- mobility which will soon be experienced in every day driving. The BMW Group has already announced the development of a purely electrically driven MINI series vehicle. The first of these large-scale produced MINIs with battery-electric drivetrains will be available from 2019 – exactly 60 years after the launch of the classic Mini.
This model ensures electro-mobility is a MINI-typical experience of driving fun, style and individuality. The electric drivetrain will be built at the BMW Group’s e-mobility centre at Plants Dingolfing and Landshut in Bavaria before being integrated into the car at Plant Oxford, which is the main production location for the MINI 3 door model.
Forerunner for electric driving fun: The MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4.
The MINI Electric Concept will be presented side-by-side with the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4. The British brand’s first Plug-in-Hybrid model is already paving the way for pure electric driving fun.
The MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 is an all-rounder with a difference. With five seats, a generous boot and numerous mod cons it ensures on-brand driving fun, either side of the city boundaries. Its power is derived from a combustion engine and an electric motor, which combined reach a system performance of 221hp. In pure electric mode the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 reaches a top speed of 78mph, ensuring a large part of the daily driving can be completed emission free.
When an increase in performance is required the combustion engine is activated. The precisely steered interaction of the power to the front wheels through the combustion engine, and to the rear wheels through the electric motor ensures an intelligent all-wheel drive. Superior driving fun in all weather conditions and on all road surfaces is, therefore, guaranteed.
MINI Countryman and MINI Clubman: Two individual characters in the premium compact segment.
The Plug-in-Hybrid drivetrain renders the new MINI Countryman a pioneer in the area of sustainable mobility. Furthermore, two additional engine variants of the largest and most versatile MINI model in the US American market are available.
The MINI Cooper Countryman is powered by a 134 hp 3-cylinder engine. The 4-cylinder engine of the MINI Cooper S Countryman enables a top speed of 189 hp. Both models come as standard with a 6-speed manual transmission and optionally with either a 6-speed automatic transmission or 8-speed automatic transmission (MINI Cooper S Countryman only). Key Exhibition Models
Honda Sports EV Concept:
Honda exhibited the world premiere of the Honda Sports EV Concept, a concept model that combines EV performance and AI (artificial intelligence) inside a compact body with the aim to realise the joy of driving the user can feel with a sense of unity with the car.
Honda Urban EV Concept:
Built on a newly-developed dedicated EV platform, the Honda Urban EV Concept is a concept model which indicates the technology and design directions for Honda’s future mass-production EV models. A new model based on this concept will go on sale first in Europe, and then in Japan in 2020.
The Honda NeuV is an EV concept model that explores the potential of mobility products, which will be further expanded by automated driving technologies and AI. NeuV makes judgments about the driver’s state of stress based on facial expressions and/or tone of voice and provides assistance to the driver to support safe driving, and by learning the driver’s lifestyle and preferences, provides suggestions to the particular driver, realising communication between driver and mobility.
The Honda CR-V is an SUV model enjoyed by customers in more than 160 countries around the world. The lineup of this all-new CR-V includes a series-first hybrid model equipped with Honda’s original “SPORT HYBRID i-MMD” two-motor hybrid system, which will be available in front-wheel drive and 4WD variants. The all-new CR-V is already on sale in various markets, including Australia and is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in 2018.
Based on Honda Sport Hybrid i-MMD, the output and capacity of the battery were increased, and the EV range of more than 100 km was made possible. The Clarity PHEV, a new-generation plug-in hybrid model, features an exterior form with low vehicle height, spacious cabin that seats 5 adults and a large-capacity cargo area. The Clarity PHEV is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in summer 2018.
Honda RoboCas Concept:
The Honda RoboCas Concept is a small-sized electric mobility product created to make people’s dreams and ideas come true. Different types of carrying space with a canopy can be freely combined with a compact-sized vehicle body base which has a driving function.
Honda Riding Assist-e:
The Honda Riding Assist-e is an experimental motorcycle model Honda developed by applying proprietary balance control technologies Honda amassed through its research in the field of robotics. Honda’s aim for this model is to offer motorcycle riders greater peace of mind and make life with motorcycles more fun for people by mitigating the risk of a fall.
Neo Sports Café Concept:
Honda exhibited the world premiere of the Neo Sports Café Concept, which is a concept model for a naked sport model that combines the fun and beauty of a sport bike with a new-generation motorcycle package.
The PCX Electric is an electric scooter equipped with a high-output motor developed independently by Honda as well as the Honda Mobile Power Pack, a detachable mobile battery pack. Honda PCX Electric is scheduled to go on sale in 2018 in the Asia region including Japan.
Honda newly-developed an original hybrid system designed for motorcycles. This compact hybrid system employs a high-output battery and ACG starter to assist the engine and enables PCX Hybrid to realize a “torqueful” riding performance. Honda PCX Hybrid is scheduled to go on sale in 2018 in the Asia region including Japan.
Gold Wing Tour /Gold Wing
Honda exhibited the Japan premiere of the Honda Gold Wing grand touring model, which has been evolving as a flagship motorcycle model of Honda, and will underwent a full model change. The all-new Gold Wing features new technologies including a newly-developed horizontally-opposed 6-cylinder engine, 7-speed DCT and Honda’s original double wishbone suspension. The GOLDWING is planned to go on sale through Honda's new "Honda Dream" sales channel to be launched in April 2018.
Super Cub 110, a commemorative model recognising the 100 million-unit milestone
The Super Cub 110 is a special model Honda produced exclusively for the Tokyo Motor Show to commemorate the achievement of the 100 million-unit global production milestone this year and the 60th anniversary next year for the Super Cub series.
Super Cub C125
The Super Cub 125C inherited and evolved the attractive design and functionality as a personal commuter from the first-generation Super Cub (C100). This new 125 cc model features the latest equipment such as a smart key and electric seat opener and yet realizes ample power for a comfortable riding experience.
Cross Cub 110
Featuring a crossover style which will look good for both urban area riding and outdoor activities, the Cross Cub 110 proposes a new value of Honda Cub motorcycles. As a model oriented toward recreational use, the “tough” image is being emphasised with the adoption of a leg shield and wider tyres.
A 125cc horizontal, single-cylinder engine was installed to the signature body of the Honda Monkey with a sense of intentional deformation which comes from the short & tall body proportion unique to the Monkey series. Adopting unique features such as LED lights and digital meters, the Monkey 125 explores the new appeal of the Honda Monkey model.
Honda Exhibits at the TOKYO CONNECTED LAB 2017
Honda Ie-Mobi Concept (pronounced: ee-a mo-bee – “Ie” is a Japanese word for “home”): Honda Ie-Mobi Concept is an electrical mobility product that seamlessly connects a home and the car. Honda Ie-Mobi Concept makes it possible to supply electricity from the car to the home and from the home to the car. Moreover, this vehicle can be used also as a small room with the size of approximately 4.95m2.
Honda Fure-Mobi Concept (pronounced: foo-ray mo-bee – “Fure” comes from the Japanese word “Fureai” which means interaction, contact or touch):Honda Fure-Mobi Concept was developed under the theme of human-to-human interaction. This model has a size equivalent to that of a one-person electric wheelchair, but seats two people and realises smooth travelling on walkways or indoor spaces. Honda developed this model with the hope that this vehicle, which enables two people to move around together, will make people more proactively want to enjoy an outing.
Honda Chair-Mobi Concept:
Honda Chair-Mobi Concept is a chair-type mobility product that can be casually used in indoor or outdoor spaces. Its compact size and ability to turn in a small radius enable it to come into a tight space. The height-adjustable seating face features a function to maintain a level seat even while it is driven uphill or downhill. Honda developed this model as a mobility device that is capable of manoeuvering as flexibly as a pedestrian so that it can be used in various occasions.
Honda Ai-Miimo Concept
Honda Ai-Miimo Concept was developed based on the Honda Miimo, an electric self-propelled robotic lawn mower. By installing AI, it was turned into a model that communicates with its user and supports the user in their everyday life. Honda developed this model with the hope to create an existence that goes beyond the framework of a “product” but brings smiles and pleasant moments in people’s lives just like a pet or family member.
The Nissan IMx, an all-electric crossover concept vehicle offering fully autonomous operation and a driving range of more than 600 kilometers, was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show.
The innovative concept vehicle provides a glimpse into the future of Nissan Intelligent Mobility, Nissan’s approach to changing how cars are powered, driven and integrated with society. It’s designed to strengthen the link between car and driver as a close, reliable partner that delivers a safer, more convenient and more enjoyable drive.
By offering unprecedented enjoyment in motion and the ability to control the vehicle’s drive mode, the Nissan IMx aims to transform the everyday life of drivers.

Making travel more enjoyable: Nissan Intelligent Driving
At the core of the IMx’s technological features is a future version of ProPILOT that offers fully autonomous operation. When ProPILOT drive mode is selected, the system stows the steering wheel inside the dashboard and reclines all seats, giving the driver more space and allowing the vehicle’s occupants to relax and enjoy their commute. When Manual drive mode is selected, the vehicle returns the steering wheel and seats to their original position, seamlessly transferring control back to the driver.
Promoting the convenience and pleasure of electric driving: Nissan Intelligent Power
The Nissan IMx zero-emission concept vehicle adopts Nissan’s new EV platform, designed for maximum efficiency. It allows the floor to be completely flat, resulting in a cavernous cabin and enhanced driving dynamics. With a low center of gravity, the chassis delivers sharp handling that promises to redefine the crossover segment.
The powerful yet quiet powertrain delivers enhanced excitement. The IMx is propelled by a pair of high-output electric motors at the front and rear, giving it all-wheel-drive capability. They combine to produce 320 kW of power and an astounding 700 Nm of torque, sourced from a high-capacity battery which has been redesigned and re-engineered for increased energy density. This new battery supports a driving range of more than 600 kilometers on a single charge, so occupants can enjoy an extended adventure without worrying about recharging.
Becoming part of the social infrastructure: Nissan Intelligent Integration
The Nissan IMx can also contribute to the social infrastructure like no other vehicle before it. For example, after transporting its owner to the airport, the IMx can park itself in a spot where the vehicle can connect to the local power grid and act as a “virtual” power plant by returning electricity to the grid, an extension of its vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-building features. Once the owner returns, the IMx can pick them up at the terminal and drive home. The whole process is carried out efficiently, thanks in part to the increased battery capacity and connected-car technologies, including Seamless Autonomous Mobility.
New EV design philosophies for the autonomous era
Until now, vehicles have been designed with a clear differentiation between exterior and interior. Exterior design provides a sense of security from the outside, while the interior design gives drivers an appropriate environment for concentrating on driving.
This purpose-based differentiation is likely to change with the arrival of fully autonomous vehicles. Nissan’s designers sought to redefine the interior space of the IMx to create a sense of openness, while maintaining a feeling of privacy. To achieve this, they endeavored to design a space that links up the inside and outside of the vehicle.
They also wanted to convey the key characteristics of electric vehicles – quiet and smooth with a sense of light, yet powerful and dynamic. They took inspiration from the Japanese concepts of ma, a sense of space and time, and wa (harmony), expressing the coexistence of two seemingly contradictory concepts – “stillness” and “motion.”
Exterior design: showcasing the unique characteristics of electric vehicles
The IMx’s styling conveys its clean and sporty electric-vehicle attributes by incorporating Nissan’s signature design features. From the familiar V-motion grille, the supple character line rises and flows to the hood and rear end. The broad surfaces of the distinctively shaped front fenders start from the grille and expand seamlessly onto the body sides, creating a sense of layers.
The vermillion accent color, contrasting vividly with the pearl white-colored body, is inspired by uramasari, which describes the beauty and extravagance found on the inside of traditional Japanese kimonos.
Interior design: spacious and relaxing, with simplicity
The IMx concept vehicle’s interior adheres to the basic concept of space that can be found in a traditional Japanese house, suggesting a sense of openness.
The car’s panoramic OLED instrument panel displays a view of the external environment in the background. A separate, wood grain-patterned display, positioned below the instrument panel and wrapping around the interior door trims, gives occupants a subtle sense of the outside, similar to a shoji, a traditional Japanese paper screen.
The katanagare diagonal pattern on the seats has been delicately etched with a laser cutter. The head rest – patterned like kumiki, a Japanese interlocking wood puzzle – is made from silicon-material cushioning and a frame produced by a 3D printer.
Artificial intelligence enables the driver to control the instrument panel with eye movements and hand gestures. This intuitive interface results in fewer physical controls and switches, making the cabin of the IMx simple yet highly efficient and adding to its supreme comfort.
Subaru unveiled its VIZIV Performance Concept at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show. The VIZIV series of concepts embodies Subaru’s vision for the future of making cars that deliver “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind.”
The first sedan body of the series, the VIZIV Performance Concept symbolizes superior Subaru driving performance and the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) layout, powered by a Boxer engine honed over more than five decades of development.
In sports sedan form, it conveys the concept of driving enjoyment that Subaru continues to pursue. In anticipation of widespread future deployment of automated driving technologies, advanced driver assist functions, combining the next generation EyeSight® system with other devices, are installed.
The name VIZIV derives from “Vision for Innovation.”

The VIZIV Performance Concept draws inspiration from previous production models symbolizing the Subaru driving experience: the Legacy (Liberty in Australia), which defined Subaru as a driver’s car, plus Impreza and WRX, which took the World Rally Championship by storm.
Based on Subaru’s “Dynamic X Solid” design philosophy, this next-generation sports sedan encapsulates driving enjoyment.
Driving performance is highlighted by a low centre of gravity, the dynamic flare of the guards, use of carbon fibre parts in the bumpers, guards and roof, and the glimpse of the exhaust in the rear bumper. The three-dimensional form of the front grille is flanked by hawk-eye headlights while the muscular guards point to the reliability of Symmetrical AWD.
ADVANCED DRIVER ASSIST TECHNOLOGIES
Subaru has teamed advanced driver assist technologies scheduled for launch around 2020, with the high performance offered by the Boxer engine and Symmetrical AWD - creating a sports sedan symbolizing the “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind” expected of its cars.
By also incorporating further enhancements to EyeSight driver assist technology, radar and highly accurate GPS and navigation systems, Subaru continues to pursue the ultimate levels of safety, aimed at eliminating accidents.
BRZ STI SPORT
Also unveiled in Tokyo was the BRZ STI Sport. While on-sale only in the Japan domestic market, some elements will be included in a yet-to-be disclosed Australian variant, which will be on sale around end of year. The new range-topping variant in Japan has been jointly developed with Subaru Tecnica International (STI), to achieve new levels of driving performance, quality feel and luxury.
The suspension features flexible V-braces and flexible draw stiffener front suspension. Exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels and high-performance tyres are used. The ZF-made SACHS shock absorbers, and coil springs specially tuned by STI, improve steering response and suppress roll - achieving flexible but highly stable driving performance.
The exterior is highlighted by an exclusive front bumper and adopts glossy black components, emphasizing strength and superb driving performance. The interior colour motif is unique to the variant, featuring Bordeaux red coordination. Quality materials include genuine leather and Alcantara® seats.
Exclusive components are used for the instrument panel and its glare shield, and for the steering wheel, creating a sporty and special space.

At the 45th Tokyo Motor Show, which opens to the public on October 27, 2017, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) will celebrate the world debut of the MITSUBISHI e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT. The all-electric high performance SUV embodies MMC’s new brand strategy under the new “Drive your Ambition” global tagline, a strategy that reflects an adventurous and progressive mindset for inspirational design and product.
The MITSUBISHI e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT is a technical prototype to illustrate the strategic directions of a renewed MMC brand that incorporates the strengths of SUV, EV, and the ability to integrate new systems for a connected mobility customer experience.
Under this new ethos, MMC will expand its customer base, leveraging its strong pedigree of driving performance and reliability with breakthrough SUVs and crossovers. As a first-mover in electric vehicles, MMC will expand and accelerate its EV deployment. MMC will push the technological envelope with a tightly integrated system of AI, connectivity, on-board and cloud computing.
"Robust & Ingenious": The design philosophy of Mitsubishi Motors
MMC has adopted a design philosophy under the title "Robust & Ingenious.”
“We aim to provide vehicles that fulfill our customers' desires through outstanding design, combined with the power, authenticity and carefully-considered functionality Mitsubishi Motors is known for,” said MMC Head of Global Design Tsunehiro Kunimoto.
Robust & ingenious, the design language of the MITSUBISHI e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT, is a study in contrasts. MMC vehicles of the future are meant to be sincere, tough, and functional. At the same time, they will be clever, resourceful, style-setting and technologically advanced.
The design of the MITSUBISHI e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT
MMC has a long and strong heritage. Think of “Mitsubishi Motors,” and proven off-road performance, along with superior 4WD control come to mind. Now, the banner of superior, high-performance 4WD control is carried forward by the MITSUBISHI e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT. The design expresses the readiness to grip the ground with all four-wheels, and the agility of a high performance cross-country tourer.
The front face design of the MITSUBISHI e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT is a fresh take on MMC’s archetypal DYNAMIC SHIELD design. The black grille is shielded under glass, a subtle hint that this car is a high performance electric vehicle. Protected under the glass, and accentuated by blue lines for emphasis, sit cameras and sensors. Large air intakes are located beneath the headlamps, ready to cool the electric brake calipers. Adding to the vehicle’s excellent aerodynamics, the drawn-in air passes jet tailfins on the C-pillars before exiting on either side of the rear bumper.
A sharply slanted front windshield and short overhangs give the e- MITSUBISHI EVOLUTION CONCEPT a unique side profile that has not been possible before the arrival of electric propulsion. High ground clearance, short overhangs, strong shoulders, and narrow hips project nimbleness and agility. Muscular tires that protrude at the four corners communicate powerful 4WD torque. Bars running from front to rear along either side of the roof enhance the vehicle’s muscular attitude.
The large hexagon shape at the rear draws inspiration from the spare tire cover of the quintessential SUV, the legendary Mitsubishi Pajero, a hallmark of off-road driving, and one of the most iconic chapters of MMC’s heritage.
Inside, the cockpit of the MITSUBISHI e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT shows that its designers suddenly had the freedom to go beyond the traditional firewall. The MITSUBISHI e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT is powered by three torqueful electric motors, and the absence of a big internal combustion engine under the hood gave designers the space to realize a radically novel cockpit. Its instrument panel appears to float in front of the driver. It is a MMC vehicle, and the instrument panel adopts MMC’s trademark horizontal styling, with the focus on information above the axis and on operation below. Acting like a level in an electronic viewfinder, the horizontal instrument panel makes it easier to sense the state of the vehicle during driving – form follows function well down the road.
A large flat screen spans the full width of the dashboard. It displays outside conditions, navigation and coaching information. The large screen is flanked by two smaller screens, showing images from front and rear cameras. Full-glass windows provide near unobstructed 360-degree visibility, for a feeling more akin to a jet fighter than a car.
The technologies of the MITSUBISHI e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT
EV system: The MITSUBISHI e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT uses high-torque, high-performance electric motors, fed by a high-capacity battery system to deliver the smooth and powerfully responsive performance that distinguishes EVs from ICE-powered vehicles. The drive battery is located under the floor mid-ship of the vehicle, providing a low center of gravity for the utmost driving stability.
4WD system: For exceptional driving performance, the triple motor 4WD system employs a single motor to drive the front wheels, complemented by a new Dual Motor Active Yaw Control (AYC) system that couples two rear motors through an electronically controlled torque-vectoring AYC unit. All of this is integrated into MMC’s unique Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) vehicle dynamic control system. Cornering performance and traction performance are improved. The brakes of the MITSUBISHI e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT responsively and precisely control the driving forces with the help of electric calipers that supersede the conventional hydraulic caliper. The effects of the system can be felt and appreciated immediately, even at low speeds when G-forces are low. Whether driving around town, on expressways, or winding roads, the fully electric vehicle always provides crisp and nimble handling that faithfully mirrors driver intent.
AI system: The brain of the MITSUBISHI e-EVOLUTION CONCEPT is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system that augments the driver’s capabilities. An array of sensors allows the AI system to instantly read changes in road and traffic conditions, as well as the driver’s intent. Seamlessly coordinating driver intent with vehicle performance, the system supports drivers of all abilities. By making it easier and safer to control the vehicle, the motoring experience is brought to a new level. A special coaching function allows the AI system to transfer knowledge to the driver, and to unobtrusively enhance the driving expertise. After building a picture of the driver’s skill level, the system constructs a training program that provides advice through voice dialogue and a large dashboard display. As a result, drivers of all abilities quickly experience a vehicle that behaves the way they want it, and soon they find themselves enjoying the driving experience to an even greater degree.
Mazda Motor Corporation unveiled two concept models, the Mazda KAI CONCEPT and the Mazda VISION COUPE at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show. Organized by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, the show will be open to the public from Oct. 28 through Nov. 5.
The Mazda KAI CONCEPT compact hatchback heralds a new generation of Mazda cars. Featuring the next-generation SKYACTIV-X petrol engine, SKYACTIV-Vehicle Architecture and a more mature expression of the KODO design language, the model embodies the technology, engineering and design concepts that will define the next generation of Mazda cars.
Refinements in all areas of dynamic performance have produced a dramatically quieter, more comfortable ride and an enhanced performance feel. The KAI CONCEPT features muscular, solid proportions and its form is brought to life by a delicate flow of reflections over the body sides.
The VISION COUPE represents Mazda’s design vision for next-generation models; a more mature expression of KODO applies a Japanese aesthetic to achieve more elegant and premium styling. The exterior features a “one motion” form that exudes a sense of speed and the interior combines three-dimensional depth with a strong longitudinal axis to create a relaxed space that maintains a sense of speed.
