Los Angeles. MINI’s appearance at the Los Angeles Auto Show 2017 will focus on the diversity of its current model programme as well as its vision of future driving fun, so typical of the MINI brand.

The highlight of the show will be the US premiere of the MINI Electric Concept. The British premium brand’s concept vehicle is the precursor to emission-free mobility, MINI-style. The MINI-typical go-kart feeling takes on a whole new level thanks to the purely electric drivetrain.

From 1 – 10 December 2017 MINI will also be presenting its entire spectrum of models to visitors of the LA Auto show. The new, limited Ice Blue Edition, which has been produced especially for the US market, will also be on display.

For 15 years now MINI has been consistently exciting a growing fan base with efficient driving fun, distinctive design and individual style. During this time the brand has not only succeeded in further strengthening its model programme, but has also conquered new customer target groups. This development will be reflected at the MINI stand at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The MINI Hardtop 2 door, the MINI Hardtop 4 door and the MINI Convertible represent the pinnacle of the premium small car segment. The brand has established itself furthermore in the premium compact segment with the MINI Clubman and MINI Countryman.

MINI Electric Concept: Urban Driving Fun with zero-emissions.

MINI has once again chosen the Los Angeles Auto Show to stage its vision of future mobility MINI-style with the US premiere of the MINI Electric Concept.

In November 2008 the International Auto Show in California became showcase for the world premiere of the MINI E. For the first time ever the British premium automotive producer presented a purely electrically- driven vehicle, based on the predecessor of the current MINI Hardtop 2 door.

The MINI E was originally produced as a small series of 600 electric vehicles and was field-tested in real, everyday driving situations. The BMW Group incorporated the knowledge drawn from this trial into the development of the BMW i3 among other vehicles.

Electro-mobility MINI-style – to be experienced on the road soon

The design and vehicle concept of the MINI Electric Concept illustrate perfectly how electric mobility in the urban environment can enrich the distinctive charm, individuality and driving experience of a MINI. The MINI E’s powerful electric engine excites with quick reactions at the touch of the accelerator. Its energy is derived from a lithium-ion battery. MINI-typical agility as well as maximum range is, therefore, ensured when driving emission-free.

The MINI Electric Concept epitomizes a distinctive form of electro- mobility which will soon be experienced in every day driving. The BMW Group has already announced the development of a purely electrically driven MINI series vehicle. The first of these large-scale produced MINIs with battery-electric drivetrains will be available from 2019 – exactly 60 years after the launch of the classic Mini.

This model ensures electro-mobility is a MINI-typical experience of driving fun, style and individuality. The electric drivetrain will be built at the BMW Group’s e-mobility centre at Plants Dingolfing and Landshut in Bavaria before being integrated into the car at Plant Oxford, which is the main production location for the MINI 3 door model.

Forerunner for electric driving fun: The MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4.

The MINI Electric Concept will be presented side-by-side with the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4. The British brand’s first Plug-in-Hybrid model is already paving the way for pure electric driving fun.

The MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 is an all-rounder with a difference. With five seats, a generous boot and numerous mod cons it ensures on-brand driving fun, either side of the city boundaries. Its power is derived from a combustion engine and an electric motor, which combined reach a system performance of 221hp. In pure electric mode the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 reaches a top speed of 78mph, ensuring a large part of the daily driving can be completed emission free.

When an increase in performance is required the combustion engine is activated. The precisely steered interaction of the power to the front wheels through the combustion engine, and to the rear wheels through the electric motor ensures an intelligent all-wheel drive. Superior driving fun in all weather conditions and on all road surfaces is, therefore, guaranteed.

MINI Countryman and MINI Clubman: Two individual characters in the premium compact segment.

The Plug-in-Hybrid drivetrain renders the new MINI Countryman a pioneer in the area of sustainable mobility. Furthermore, two additional engine variants of the largest and most versatile MINI model in the US American market are available.

The MINI Cooper Countryman is powered by a 134 hp 3-cylinder engine. The 4-cylinder engine of the MINI Cooper S Countryman enables a top speed of 189 hp. Both models come as standard with a 6-speed manual transmission and optionally with either a 6-speed automatic transmission or 8-speed automatic transmission (MINI Cooper S Countryman only). Furthermore, both the MINI Cooper Countryman and MINI Cooper S Countryman can be combined with all-wheel drive ALL4.

With an identical drivetrain, the new MINI Clubman also ensures unique driving fun in the premium compact segment. Moreover, its unique body concept ensures it stands out in this vehicle category. Four side doors and the two Split Doors at the rear present a modern interpretation of the classic Shooting Brake. Its suitability for daily driving use is underlined with five fully-fledged seats, a large luggage compartment and flexible configuration of its floor space.

MINI Hardtop 2 door, MINI Hardtop 4 door and MINI Convertible: three Originals in the premium small car Segment

The foundation for the success of the MINI brand over the last 15 years in the USA has been laid thanks to the premium models in the small car segment. The Original in this vehicle segment distinguishes itself through its high-quality engine, chassis technology, premium quality and individuality. The hatchback body shell is represented as always by the MINI Hardtop 2 door. It is available in the USA as a MINI Cooper with 134hp and as a MINI Cooper S with 189 hp.

The latest limited edition model will draw visitors’ attention to the MINI Hardtop 2 Door. At the Los Angeles Auto Show 2017 the limited
Ice Blue Edition, produced especially for the USA will also be on display.

With MINI Ice Blue Edition, one of the most popular and iconic MINI body colors returns as an exclusive MINI Hardtop 2 Door. Available as a Cooper with a white roof and mirror caps, or as a Cooper S with the sporty punch of Bright Orange side stripes and mirror caps, it’s pure classic cool, with essential modern upgrades.

The principle of clever use of space, used ever since the classic Mini, has been consistently developed with the MINI Hardtop 4 door. In addition to the two extra doors, the functionality of the vehicle is increased by the 161 mm longer body and three rear seats.

Similar to the MINI Hardtop 2 door, the MINI Hardtop 4 door is available with two engine variants. The trio of small car Originals are completed with the MINI Convertible. It combines brand-typical driving fun with exclusive open air pleasure and also in the current generation, it is the only premium cabriolet in its vehicle category. The open-air 4-seater is also available with two engine variants – as MINI Cooper Convertible and as MINI Cooper S Convertible.

MINI is shaping the future of urban mobility by providing driving fun in increasing diversity. At the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show, the British premium brand gives visitors an impression of how the unmistakable MINI feeling will develop in future to cover a broader range beyond the current model program. Innovative concepts and technologies provide additional room for individual flair and highly emotional experiences, while continuing to enhance the thrilling agility and exemplary efficiency that are typical of MINI.

The MINI Electric Concept showcased in Frankfurt for the first time embodies a whole new dimension of the brand's characteristic go-kart feeling, now combining it with locally emission-free mobility. The concept vehicle conveys a message of sustainable urban transportation in MINI style while at the same time previewing a volume production model that will follow soon. The first purely electrically powered MINI to be manufactured in large-scale production will go on the road in 2019 – precisely 60 years after the classic Mini was first launched. It will make electromobility a highly emotional experience that combines driving fun, style and individual flair – as is characteristic of the MINI brand.

Lots of driving fun on a small surface area – this traditional principle will remain an integral part of MINI in the future, too. It is a fundamental element of its character that is derived from spectacular motor racing success. 50 years ago the classic Mini achieved its third outright victory at the Monte Carlo Rally. The MINI ACV 30 concept study presented 20 years ago, demonstrated just how much the model's racing career influenced not only the history of the classic Mini but also the development of the modern MINI.

The Anniversary Concept Vehicle that came out right on time to mark the 30th anniversary of the car's third triumph at the "Monte" showed how the classic Mini's characteristic design features – such as the hexagon radiator grille and the large circular headlamps – could be transferred to a modern vehicle concept. The foundation stone was laid for a new era full of driving fun and individual style in a variety of forms.

Diversity and individual character are also embodied by the other elements of the MINI trade fair showcase in Frankfurt. From 14 to 24 September, the British premium manufacturer presents a broad cross- section of its range, containing elements drawn from the current model program, its rich selection of optional equipment and the latest additions in the area of accessory and lifestyle products. The setting for this display of both current and future items is Hall 11 at the main entrance to the Frankfurt trade fair centre, a site that will be shared by the BMW, MINI and BMW Motorrad brands.

More driving fun, more style, no emissions: MINI Electric Concept.

The MINI Electric Concept is modern, purist and efficiently dynamic, providing a look ahead to a new form of urban mobility free of local emissions that still guarantees unmistakable driving fun. The spontaneous response of the electric motor to every movement of the accelerator adds a whole new dimension to hallmark brand agility. The powerful drive of the MINI Electric Concept draws its energy from a lithium-ion battery, ensuring maximum range and typical MINI agility combined with emission-free mobility.

The MINI Electric Concept not only stands for increased driving fun, it also adds a touch more style in local emission-free city traffic. Its design combines hallmark brand proportions and design features with specific details reflecting the fact that is purely electrically powered. Since the electric motor does not require cooling air, the hexagonal front grille is closed in order to enhance the car's aerodynamic properties. There are also fibre glass attachment parts that reduce aerodynamic drag. The paint finish in Reflection Silver and Interchange Yellow is reminiscent of the MINI E presented in 2008. Produced in a small series of some 600, the latter was subjected to field tests in everyday driving conditions, thereby providing key insights for the development of the purely electrically powered BMW i3.

The MINI Electric Concept is the next step along the way to sustainable urban mobility. The BMW Group announced in July 2017 that the expansion of its model range to include electrically powered vehicles was to be a central pillar of its corporate strategy. In this connection, start of production of the first purely electric MINI was announced for 2019.

Based on the MINI 3 door, the electric vehicle will be manufactured at the MINI plant in Oxford. Its drivetrain will be produced at the Dingolfing and Landshut sites – the competence centres for e-mobility within the BMW Group production network.

Paving the way for electric driving fun: the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4.

The world premiere of the MINI Electric Concept comes just a few months after the launch of the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 (combined fuel consumption: 2.3 – 2.1 l/100 km; combined power consumption: 14.0 – 13.2 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions from fuel: 52 – 49 g/km). The first plug-in hybrid model of the British brand is already paving the way for purely electric and therefore locally emission- free driving fun. Thanks to its battery range of up to 42 kilometres in the NEDC test cycle, the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 effortlessly overcomes the limits of urban mobility without producing any CO2 emissions at all. And sustainable MINI feeling is ensured beyond city limits, too: a top speed of 125 km/h is possible in electric driving mode.

This means that pure electric power is already sufficient to take care of most everyday driving. The combustion engine comes into play if a higher level of performance is required. Together the two power units produce a system output of 165 kW/224 hp. Here again, the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 offers an entirely distinctive experience. The precisely controlled interplay between the combustion engine driving the front wheels and the electric motor powering the rear wheels makes for an intelligent all-wheel drive system that guarantees supreme driving fun in all weather conditions and on all road surfaces.

Four new safety ratings have been awarded by the independent vehicle safety authority, ANCAP, to a mix of European brands - the Skoda Kodiaq, Audi Q5, Mini Countryman and Audi Q2 all achieving 5 stars. The release of the rating for the new Skoda Kodiaq mid-size SUV coincides with its entry onto the Australasian market, and applies to all 4x4 variants.

“The Kodiaq has been assessed against the latest criteria offering a range of important safety technologies as standard including autonomous emergency braking, multi-collision braking and speed limiter,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, James Goodwin.

Publication of the Audi Q5 rating also corresponds with local vehicle availability, and applies to all Q5 and SQ5 variants.

“A top safety score and impressive array of standard safety features are offered on all Q5 and SQ5 models. It has an advanced autonomous emergency braking system which operates at city and highway speeds, with the added ability to detect and assist in avoiding pedestrians up to a speed of 85km/h,” Goodwin added.

The new Mini Countryman, which was introduced into Australia and New Zealand in March, takes a step in the right direction improving on its predecessor’s 4 star rating achieving the maximum 5 star level of safety as assessed against the latest criteria.

“Not only has Mini improved on the structural performance of the Countryman – they’re offering the highest level of safety assist features seen from the brand with autonomous emergency braking including pedestrian detection, and a speed sign recognition and warning system,” he said.

Introduced in February, the Audi Q2 also holds high safety credentials. This 5 star ANCAP safety rating applies to all variants.

“This new market entrant in the Small SUV segment is another good example of key safety technologies being provided not just in the luxury, larger-sized end of the market. Consumers should be buoyed by these ratings which show brands are keeping pace with increasing safety standards,” Goodwin added.

MINI Australia has announced pricing and specification details for the MINI John Cooper Works (JCW) Countryman. Priced from $56,900*, the flagship Countryman combines range-topping specification with a premium, dynamic driving experience.

The JCW Countryman is the fourth model to be added to the JCW range, and the second model that combines the 170kW JCW engine package with the All4 intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

“The all-new MINI Countryman range has been very well received, both in Australia and internationally,” said MINI Australia General Manager, Tony Sesto. “Now with the flagship JCW version’s fantastic combination of performance and usability, we expect even more excitement to be generated across the range.”

Trademark JCW performance touches

The 170kW/350Nm MINI TwinPower turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is capable of propelling the JCW Countryman to 100km/h in 6.5 seconds, with either the eight-speed sports automatic transmission or six-speed manual, available to enthusiasts as a no-cost option.

Combined fuel consumption sits at 7.8L/100km for the manual and 7.4L/100km for the automatic, with the driving experience personalised via three selectable driving modes: Normal, Sport or Green. The high-performance 17-inch Brembo brake package comes as standard, nestled behind the 19-inch JCW Course Spoke light alloy wheels. The exterior is highlighted with a piano black finish to the roof rails and side sill mouldings, while JCW side scuttles add further differentiation. The JCW-specific dual exhaust pipes are given a chrome finish.

Exclusive JCW touches continue inside the JCW Countryman, with front passengers welcomed into Dinamica/Leather-trimmed JCW sports seats as the driver grips a three-spoke JCW sports leather multi-function steering wheel.

Characteristic MINI driving fun is now available in fascinating, sustainable form.

The MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 is the first model of the British premium brand in which a plug-in hybrid drive provides the option of mobility that is purely electric and therefore emissions-free, in addition to offering the thrill of athletic agility and supreme versatility.

The job of providing efficient forward propulsion is shared between a 3-cylinder petrol engine and a synchronous electric motor. Together they produce a system output of 165 kW/224 hp. Equally impressive is the average fuel consumption of 2.1 litres per 100 kilometres and the CO2 emissions figure of 49 grams per kilometre (EU test cycle figures for plug-in hybrid vehicles). The MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 is thus the perfect vehicle for urban target groups who wish to enjoy the benefits of purely electric mobility when commuting between home and work every day, for example, while at the same time benefiting from unlimited long-distance suitability at the weekend.

The MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 combines the variable space concept of the new model generation’s largest member with the sustainability of BMW Group eDrive technology and an electrified all-wheel drive system. The front wheels are powered by the combustion engine, the rear wheels by the electric motor. The MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 is able to run on electricity alone not just in urban traffic but far beyond, too – at a top speed of 125 km/h and with a range of up to 42 kilometres.

Drawing on the power of both drive forms, it offers driving fun away from surfaced roads, too. “The plug-in hybrid concept perfectly matches the new MINI Countryman because it offers intelligent all-wheel drive as well as being able to run on electricity alone both in urban areas and over longer distances, too. This is unique in the segment,” says Uwe Seitz, Project Director MINI Plug-in Hybrid.

The BMW Group’s technological expertise and range of models have given it a leading role in the area of electric mobility. MINI was an early pioneer here: the MINI E presented in 2008 was the BMW Group’s first ever purely electrically powered automobile and was driven by private users in everyday traffic as part of a large-scale field experiment. More than 600 of this vehicle based on the MINI Cooper were used for practical testing purposes worldwide. The project yielded vital insights into the use of electrically powered automobiles, and these were incorporated in the development of the BMW i3.

Completing the new-generation MINI range, the latest MINI Countryman has arrived in Australia. Four models will be available from launch, with a range of petrol and diesel drivetrains and front- or all-wheel drive options ensuring an adventurous level of versatility.

“The new MINI Countryman introduces the excitement of the MINI range to the Premium Compact segment,” said MINI Australia General Manager, Tony Sesto. “It’s the perfect car for families to enjoy an active lifestyle, with ample space, comfort and high efficiency from the new engine family. The standard advanced safety systems add further peace of mind.”

An adventurous new look, crafted to personal taste

At 4,299mm the second-generation MINI Countryman is 199mm longer than the predecessor model. Width has increased 33mm to 1822mm, height gains 13mm to 1557mm and the wheelbase has grown 75mm to 2670mm, increasing both road presence and interior space. The MINI Countryman offers a bold appearance that retains typical MINI design DNA, while embracing its position as the brand’s premier Sports Activity Vehicle.

Satin silver side mouldings and attention-grabbing roof rails express the Countryman’s multi-faceted capabilities. Front styling follows that of the current-generation MINI Hatch range with a redesigned grille and front apertures, while at the rear a wider ‘Aeroedge’ D-pillar and redesigned tailgate further modernise the aesthetic.

An optional revised LED headlight design is further enhanced by a fresh set of daytime running lights. Countryman owners can also specify specific exterior appearance sets that best reflect their lifestyle. The standard ‘Elegant’ exterior theme can be altered to an ‘Offroad’ style via the optional MINI All4 off-road styling package. A sports-led aesthetic can be delivered via the optional John Cooper Works Chili Package.

Sophisticated new interior offers an abundance of space and luxury

Generous proportions are a MINI Countryman highlight. With 59mm additional elbow room, 50mm more shoulder room, 9mm more headroom and an impressive 50mm increase in rear legroom, the new-generation Countryman is more spacious than ever. The full five seats are easily capable of transporting five adults in comfort and the Countryman’s increased dimensions ensure the entry/exit points are easily accessed.

Further enhancing the SAV ambience is the higher-set driving position. Set a substantial 9cm higher than in the MINI Clubman, the Countryman’s visibility is commanding. Second-row passengers benefit from unprecedented adjustability, with up to 130mm of fore-aft adjustment. The seat angle can also be adjusted from -1.5 degrees to 28.5 degrees in the luxurious ‘comfort’ setting. The second-row also has a 40/20/40 split-fold, further enhancing versatility.

Storage has not been neglected, with various storage sections – including under the driver’s seat and in the full centre console – offering a flexible solution. The rear luggage area is variable in layout, with a maximum capacity of 450 litres representing a 100-litre uplift on the predecessor model. The redesigned interior features a mix of high-quality materials and horizontal design segments that create a modern look and feel. Of course, a wide array of internal and external personalisation is achievable via the MINI Yours programme.

Latest generation All4 system provides surefooted traction

The latest version of MINI’s competition-proved All4 system is fitted as standard to the flagship Cooper SD variant. Working in conjunction with the stability control system, the electronically-controlled All4 system can react quickly to the given situation to ensure maximum drive in a wide range of conditions.

Consisting of a power take-off that is integrated in the front differential, drive is transferred to the rear wheels via a propeller shaft and ‘hang-on’ clutch that can precisely apportion drive to the rear axle as demand requires. As an example of the system’s flexibility, drive is apportioned 100 per cent to the front axle. In dynamic cornering situations, the system can split drive to minimise the onset of understeer or oversteer, aiding stability. On slippery surfaces, up to 100 per cent of drive can be sent to the rear axle.

The first plug-in hybrid model of the British premium brand hits our roads in 2017 – the all-rounder for town and country now also offers the option of purely electric and therefore locally emissions-free mobility.

Hallmark MINI driving fun enters a whole new dimension – electrified, virtually noiseless, featuring thrillingly spontaneous power delivery and entirely without CO2 emissions. As of June 2017, the market launch of the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 makes the most spacious and versatile model of the British premium brand a pioneer of efficient and sustainable mobility. The first MINI plug-in hybrid model offers not just sporty agility on the road and beyond the asphalt but also the possibility of purely electrically powered driving, generating zero local emissions.

The MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 (combined power consumption: 2.3 – 2.1 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 52 – 49 g/km) will be available at dealerships from 24 June 2017.

The hybrid system of the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 is made up of a 3-cylinder petrol engine with MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology and a synchronous electric motor. Together they generate a system output of 165 kW/224 hp, enabling the car to sprint from standing to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. The power of the combustion engine is transmitted to the front wheels by means of a 6-speed Steptronic transmission. The electric motor powers the rear wheels via a two-stage single-speed transmission. The intelligently controlled interaction between the two power units creates an electrified all-wheel drive system that optimises agility and stability on the road as well as providing supreme traction over snow and unsurfaced terrain.

In everyday traffic the intelligent drive control of the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 makes for an intense hybrid driving experience. When setting off, only the electric motor is initially active meaning a virtually noiseless start. As is typical of electric motors, the entire torque is available from standing. Once a driving speed of 80 km/h is reached, the combustion engine is gently activated. The eDRIVE toggle switch enables the driver to continue to drive with the pure electric engine beyond this point if preferred: in MAX eDRIVE mode the MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 runs at up to 125 km/h free of local emissions. The electrical range of the first MINI plug-in hybrid model is 40 kilometres.

Completing the new-generation MINI range, the latest MINI Countryman arrives in Australia from late-Q1, 2017.

The second-generation MINI Countryman offers a bold appearance that retains typical MINI design DNA while embracing its position as the brand’s premier Sports Activity Vehicle.

Storage has not been neglected, with various storage sections – including under the driver’s seat – offering a flexible solution. The rear luggage area is variable in layout, with a maximum capacity of 450 litres representing a 100-litre uplift on the predecessor model.

The redesigned interior features a mix of high-quality materials and horizontal design segments that create a modern look and feel. Of course, a wide array of personalisation is achievable via MINI Yours.

MINI John Cooper Works Clubman All4 $53,900*

John Cooper Works Clubman All4 unleashes highest-ever torque output in a petrol production MINI. Since its 2015 introduction the MINI Clubman has been praised for its blend of unique styling, functionality and personalisation possibilities. The JCW Clubman All4 builds further on these attributes with a couple of key MINI firsts: it is the first current-generation variant to introduce All4 to the Australian market, and it generates the highest-ever peak torque output to be seen in a MINI petrol production vehicle.

At 350Nm, the JCW Clubman’s turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine generates an additional 30Nm over the JCW Hatch and Convertible variants. Peak power of 170kW remains on par with the existing vehicles. An updated All4 system works with the DSC system. All4 is electro hydraulically-operated and has been optimised for both weight and efficiency, enabling impressive traction tailored to the situation at hand.

The Clubman JCW is also fitted with an eight-speed sports automatic transmission, furthering its status as the highpoint of the current MINI JCW range. A six-speed manual is available as a no-cost option. The benchmark zero-100km/h sprint is achieved in a scant 6.3 seconds, while combined fuel consumption is an impressive 7.2L/100km.

Dynamics tuned to deliver

Combining sporting aesthetics with functionality, the MINI JCW Clubman is equipped with 19- inch light alloy wheels and run-flat tyres as standard. These sit proud of the sizeable 17-inch performance braking system, clamped by red callipers. A JCW-styled 18-inch light alloy wheel is also available as a no-cost option, fitted with non run-flat Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres.

Fitted with JCW suspension and 19-inch light alloy wheels as standard, enthusiasts also have the ability to fit fixed sports suspension at no cost, dropping the ride height by 10mm. Also available at no cost is dynamic damper control (in conjunction with 18-inch light alloy wheels and non run-flat tyres), which offers comfort-biased or sports-oriented suspension tuning at the flick of the switch.

MINI Performance Control, an electronic system designed to minimise understeer, is also standard on the JCW Clubman.
