The 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show hosts the world premiere of the SYMBIOZ – Renault’s vision of the car and its role in society looking ahead to 2030. Electric. Autonomous. Connected. It is designed to be fully integrated in the human ecosystem. Renault’s new concept car actively explores the future of mobility and offers a completely new travelling experience with features, technology and design that interact with its ecosystem.

“The way we use our cars is changing. Already a car is more than just a way to get from one place to another. Full of technology, it’s becoming an interactive and personalised space that connects passengers to other cars, people and objects around them” said Thierry Bolloré, Chief Competitive Officer, Groupe Renault.

From mobility of the future to pure driving enjoyment, Renault’s vision of the car is people-centred for an easier life experience.

The Renault SYMBIOZ concept is powered by all-electric motors in line with Renault’s intent to continue to pursue its Zero Emissions strategy. Renault, the European leader in electric vehicles, developed SYMBIOZ to ensure the home and car share energy. Kilowatt-hours are distributed through a smart grid shared by the car and the home in an artificial intelligence environment that anticipates people’s needs. For example, it’s possible to programme the system to use the power stored in the car batteries temporarily for the lights, screens and home appliances during peak times. If there is a blackout, this happens automatically and power sharing can be monitored and adjusted.

Both cars are electric, autonomous and fully connected to their environment. ‘Travellers’ – the driver and passengers – enjoy a cabin that feels like home and has been designed for autonomous motoring. On the road, the car becomes an extension of the home. When parked inside the home, it doubles as an extra mobile, modular and multi-purpose room.

The Renault SYMBIOZ marks an industry first

Renault is the first car manufacturer to present a complete home at a motor show that evokes future possibilities of how the car will deliver new features inside the home and will be an extension of the home on the road. Visitors to the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show were able to explore SYMBIOZ and the unprecedented display which embodies Renault’s vision of how mobility might evolve in years to come and new-generation mobility and connected services solutions.

Renault showed the house and concept in static and dynamic modes. In the first scenario, SYMBIOZ drives into the house to become an additional, modular room in the form of a useful, mobile and connected space, parking inside and then outside the physical structure.

SYMBIOZ also shows Renault’s vision of the car as an extension of the home when travelling. Generous cabin space is attributed to SYMBIOZ’s rear-wheel drive configuration, with two electric motors located on the rear axle, and the batteries housed beneath the floor. The combination of the retracting dashboard, and pivoting front seats make it ideally suited to ‘Mind-off’ autonomous driving. In this mode, drivers can easily relax and chat, read a book or enjoy total access to their personal digital world. Additional personalisation technology allows automatic detection of passengers, customized seat settings, music streaming, and entertainment options.

“After an initial series of concept cars based on Renault’s ‘Cycle of Life’ design strategy which sought to prefigure the styling of our upcoming models, our new concept cars set out to explore what mobility might resemble in the future,” said Renault SVP Corporate Design Laurens van den Acker.

“No longer can we think of car design in isolation from the ecosystem surrounding us. Renault SYMBIOZ truly is a unique project that allowed us to work with planners, designers, engineers and architects. Our goal was to explore new boundaries in customer experience, technology, energy use and design harmony to form a completely new global experience.”

A real demo car based on Easy Life of SYMBIOZ – on the road soon

An electric, autonomous and connected demo vehicle that makes real many of the elements of SYMBIOZ will be available for testing later this year. This demo vehicle embodies the brand’s mid-term vision before 2023 and previews technology Renault customers may find in its production car range in the near future. This includes an evolved version of MULTI-SENSE technology, which adapts the ambiance and driving experience to customer mood in the Mégane, Scénic, Talisman and Espace in our current range. The demo car will also showcase features from the “EASY CONNECT”, new-generation mobility and connected services solutions, and it will preview the Renault Autonomous drive technology that will be progressively deployed in the range under the name “EASY DRIVE”.

The demo version of SYMBIOZ was made in partnership with technology and creative industry leaders in an Open Innovation approach:

  • LG is involved in the development of the human-machine interfaces.
  • Ubisoft is providing on board virtual reality experience for autonomous driving mode.
  • Devialet is developing a new user experience through advanced sound system.
  • Sanef is working on the way the car communicates with road network infrastructure.
  • TomTom is contributing its geo-positioning expertise.
  • IAV is providing autonomous driving engineering expertise.

Suzuki Motor Corporation’s all-new Swift Sport has made its global debut during a press conference at the 67th IAA Frankfurt Motor Show on September 12.

The latest generation of the Swift Sport brings with it a myriad of changes which include a lower, wider stance, more aggressive styling, and a torque-to-weight ratio that catapults the Sport into true hot hatch territory.

Engineers have also bid adieu to the 1.6L naturally-aspirated motor in favour of the same 1.4L Boosterjet turbo engine seen in Vitara; a welcome addition to an increasingly powerful line-up with turbo now available in five models across the range. That, coupled with compact dimensions and a kerb weight that’s sub one-tonne should be music to the ears of sports-minded drivers.

Swift Sport chief engineer Masao Kobori said, “We know that our customers value a dynamic driving experience above everything else, so for the third-generation Swift Sport our development concept was Ultimate Driving Excitement.”

Kobori continued, “It’s lighter, sharper, and quicker. It’s more aggressive and emotive, but we’ve also refined the elements that make it practical to use every day—the clutch feel, the manual transmission shift throw, the seats and steering wheel. Everything that puts the driver at the heart of the experience.”

Whilst power and appearance were obvious key considerations, so too were safety and technology with the Sport featuring a Bluetooth®-compatible Smartphone Linkage Display Audio Display unit with a multimedia 7-inch touchscreen and sat nav together with advanced safety including lane departure warning, weaving alert, adaptive cruise and high beam assist.

This is the world’s first model in the premium compact class that can accommodate up to seven people across three rows of seats – in addition to a generously sized and variable-use luggage compartment. All of which allows the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer to meet the mobility requirements of young families and – thanks to the five newly developed turbocharged engines producing from 85 kW/116 hp to 141 kW/192 hp (fuel consumption combined: 6.4 – 3.9 l/100 km; CO2 emissions combined: 149 – 104 g/km)* and the BMW EfficientDynamics package – offer sporting dynamics combined with outstanding efficiency and the lowest CO2 emissions in the segment.

The torquey and high-revving engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology team up with rear-wheel drive – still a unique selling point in the compact segment – to deliver a suitably intense driving experience.

One highlight of the BMW stand at this year’s Auto Shanghai is the Chinese premiere of the new BMW 6 Series model range. The combination of intoxicating sports performance, majestic ride comfort, a luxurious interior ambience and innovative equipment features marks out the members of the BMW 6 Series line-up. The new BMW 6 Series Convertible, the new BMW 6 Series Coupe and the new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe meet the highest expectations of a sporting luxury car in terms of driving dynamics, comfort, advanced technology and imposing elegance. Supreme power development, impressive refinement and exemplary efficiency are attributes shared by all of the engines available for the new 6 Series Convertible, new BMW 6 Series Coupe and new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe. The range consists of a petrol V8 producing 330 kW/450 hp (fuel consumption combined: 9.1 – 8.6 l/100 km / 31.0 – 32.9 mpg imp [with xDrive 9.5 – 9.1 l/100 km / 29.7 – 31.0 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined*: 213 – 199 g/km [with xDrive 221 – 213 g/km])*, a 235 kW/320 hp six-cylinder in-line petrol engine (fuel consumption combined: 7.9 – 7.4 l/100 km / 35.8 – 38.2 mpg imp [with xDrive 8.4 – 7.9 l/100 km / 33.6 – 35.8 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined*: 184 – 172 g/km [with xDrive 195 – 183 g/km])* and a straight-six diesel with 230 kW/313 hp (fuel consumption combined: 5.8 – 5.2 l/100 km / 48.7 – 54.3 mpg imp [with xDrive 6.0 – 5.5 l/100 km / 47.1 – 51.4 mpg imp]; CO2 emissions combined: 153 – 139 g/km [with xDrive 158 – 146 g/km])*.

As an alternative to sending their engine power to the rear wheels, all new BMW 6 Series model variants can also be specified with the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

*Fuel consumption figures according to ECE test cycle, may vary depending on the tyre format specified.

Another Shanghai highlight is the Chinese premiere of the new BMW M6 models. The BMW M6 Coupe and BMW M6 Gran Coupe allow BMW M GmbH to restate its leadership in the high-performance luxury segment. The outgoing models had already set new benchmarks with the flawless balance of power, efficiency, agility, comfort and luxury that is typical of M models. And now the new BMW M6 line-up is poised to write a fresh chapter in this success story, fuelled by an even more finely honed, well-resolved overall concept. Part of the credit here goes to an extended range of standard equipment (including LED headlights and Park Distance Control), the cuttingedge tech-style interior with iPhone-look Central Information Display and centre console in black panel design, and the even greater scope for individualisation brought about by new exterior colours, new leather shades, a full-leather trim variant with contrast stitching and attractive accents in black chrome.

The unparalleled 4.4-litre V8 turbocharged engine, meanwhile, delivers a two-pronged promise of extraordinary performance and outstanding efficiency. This high-tech unit boasts impressive, innovative M TwinPower Turbo technology and develops 412 kW/560 hp. At the same time, however, the new BMW M6 Coupe and the new BMW M6 Gran Coupe require a combined fuel consumption of just 9.9 litres/100 km (28.5 mpg imp)* in the ECE test cycle, which equates to combined CO2 emissions of 231 g/km*. The BMW M6 Convertible is not available in China.

Within a short space of time, the BMW i models were successfully launched in more than 30 countries and swiftly joined the ranks of the top award-winning vehicles in the world. Following the introduction of the pioneering BMW i3 and BMW i8 models in China in September 2014, BMW is now using Auto Shanghai in April 2015 to introduce a range of innovative services for every aspect of electric mobility to the Chinese market as well. Under the umbrella of BMW 360° ELECTRIC, not only is the ChargeNow charging network being extended through the addition of fast charging stations, but pilot projects in Germany, the USA and China are also driving forward the reuse and recycling of the lithium-ion batteries from BMW i cars.

BMW ConnectedDrive is using Auto Shanghai to present a wide array of new features for the Chinese market. Following the successful introduction of the Concierge Service and launch of the BMW ConnectedDrive Store, BMW is now integrating three further apps into its cars for China: the BMW Social Connected app with text and voice messaging and information on POIs, the audio streaming service Ximalaya with more than seven million music tracks and audio clips, and the music download service Xiami Music offering more than four million music tracks.

BMW Motorrad adds two innovative new models to the BMW Group stand at Auto Shanghai 2015. On show will be the new BMW R 1200 R boxer roadster and the latest-generation BMW S 1000 RR sports bike, both models marking their debut in China. The BMW R 1200 R boasts greater comfort, dynamism and touring capability than ever before. Its flat-twin boxer engine produces 92 kW (125 hp) at 7,750 rpm and develops its peak torque of 125 Nm (92 lb-ft) at 6,500 rpm. Besides ABS and Automatic Stability Control (ASC), the new BMW R 1200 R comes equipped as standard with the two riding modes “Rain” and “Road”, making it suitable not just for laidback cruising but also for dynamic rides along country roads.

Setting new standards in the super sports bike segment is the latest generation of the BMW S 1000 RR. With a weight reduction of 4 kg, a new frame structure and optimised chassis geometry, the new model lays on even further enhanced performance characteristics. The water-cooled four-cylinder in-line engine, together with its intake and exhaust system, underwent extensive modification and redesign work to prepare them for use on the new RR. Output now peaks at 146 kW (199 hp) at 13,500 rpm, an increase of 4 kW (6 hp) on its predecessor. The maximum torque of 113 Nm (83 lb-ft) comes on line at 10,500 rpm. The further developed electronically adjustable Dynamic Damping Control system (DDC) is available as an option on the new BMW S 1000 RR. Moreover, this is the first super sports bike that can be ordered with electronic cruise control.
