The Genesis brand has introduced its all-new luxury G70 sedan. The Genesis brand officially launched the G70 at the Hyundai Genesis Design Centre within the Namyang R&D Centre, with Dr. Woong-Chul Yang, Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group and key officials of the brand. The G70 is set to go on sale on 20th September in the Korean market.

“The Genesis G70 is the latest demonstration of our dedication to delivering innovative, customer-oriented vehicles,” said Vice Chairman Yang. “We will continue to focus our R&D efforts on the development and expansion of the Genesis brand. It is a great point of pride to have Genesis showcase what a true luxury brand of Korean origin can present to our customers.”

The Genesis G70 is an athletic and elegant luxury sedan offering a graceful and dynamic exterior, function-oriented interior with three different powertrains – the 3.3 litre V6 twin- turbo petrol, 2.0 litre turbo petrol and 2.2 litre diesel. The 3.3 litre V6 twin- turbo engine boasts an impressive 0-100 kph acceleration time of 4.7 seconds.

The G70 also features high levels of advanced driver assist systems such as Highway Driving Assist (HDA), best-in-class safety with nine standard airbags and active hood function, and a high level of connectivity with server-based voice recognition technology, using Kakao’s artificial intelligence platform.

Hot stamping methods, extended use of structural adhesives and torsional rigidity, have been enhanced to improve overall body stiffness. Genesis will offer a differentiated customer experience to be provided through Genesis membership programs.

Completing the Genesis sedan lineup

The G70 is a luxury sedan completing the Genesis brand’s sedan lineup, along with the flagship G90 and G80, and will further establish the brand’s presence in the luxury market.

In November 2015 the Genesis brand was born with its sights set to compete with the world’s top luxury car manufacturers, as a Korean brand. The Genesis brand strives to make a positive difference in the lives of discerning customers, becoming an important element of their lifestyle. Furthermore, its goal is to deliver excellence in performance and design through progressive and innovative approaches.

Initially, Genesis launched its flagship G90 sedan in December 2015 and large G80 sedan in July 2016 in Korea. Since the brand’s inception, Genesis has made significant strides, selling more than 150,000 units to date with strong performance in both the Korean and U.S. markets.

Genesis has also received many accolades, most recently, ranking highest among premium car manufacturers in the J.D. Power 2017 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS) study, topping all 13 brands in the premium segment.

The G70 marks the completion of Genesis sedan line-up and the brand will now start strengthening its model range with the introduction of SUVs, and potentially alternative powertrains. Genesis plans to roll out new products to expand its presence and coverage across the global market, and by 2021 six models are expected to feature in its product portfolio.

An Exterior with Genesis’ Unique Design Identity

The all-new G70 represents the future direction of the Genesis brand’s design identity. Athletic elegance is represented in the exterior design as the car captures both beauty and tension, like an athlete poised to perform.

Luc Donckerwolke, Head of Genesis Design, said, “At Genesis, we shape fascination and desire with the passion, dedication and talent from our designers. We modulated all parameters from the Genesis DNA to tailor a sports sedan. This challenge required the highest skills and know-how. The G70 is designed to captivate all senses with its sensuous and tensioned muscular volumes.”

The long hood and short front overhang, elegant roofline and multi-spoke alloy wheels characterize a sleek, dynamic profile view subtly highlighted by dark/smoke-chrome fender aero trim.

The hockey stick daylight opening and parabolic sidelines further express the unique design signatures of Genesis, displaying fast and dramatic energy with voluptuous forms and smooth surfaces.

In the front and side views, the G70’s large crest-type grille, character lines beginning from the emblem of the voluminous hood, air intake functions, and LED daytime running lights (DRLs) express the muscularity/solidity of the car.

Two distinctive linear LED DRLs on each side of the large crest grille foreshadow the future Genesis signature quad lamps.

In the rear, the LED rear combination lamps, which continue the quad lamp theme, along with a raised trunk lid and compact bumper designs give the G70 a poised character. The rear lamps, evolved from the preceding G80, have been stretched to the end of the rear to convey a wide and dynamic stance.

A Sophisticated, Driver-Focused Interior

G70’s interior achieves both high-function and excellent fit and finish. To emphasize functionality, interior packaging is driver-focused with simplicity being prioritised. A horizontal layout brings a sense of stability and the driver-focused packaging provides a comfortable driving environment.

The three dimensional switches of the centre fascia and dials enhance functionality, while the sport-grip steering wheel adds to a driver-friendly and enjoyable driving experience. For materials Genesis designers chose aluminum door handles, quilted leather door panels, metal speaker grills and many quality soft touch materials throughout the interior. Quilted patterns and Nappa leather seats further add to the dynamic yet elegant interior.

The G70 offers a wide range of unique and sophisticated colour options that properly reflect global trends to meet client demand. The G70 will offer customers ten exterior colours: Platinum Silver, Carbon Metal, Marble White, Titanium Black, Racing Gray, Graceful Gray, Lapis Blue, Royal Blue, Blazing Red and Umber Brown.

A new finishing method separates small, evenly distributed aluminium particles and high luminosity colours, maximising the brilliance of the exterior colours. Five interior colours will be available: Obsidian Black, Sandstorm Gray, Velvet Burgundy, Tobacco Brown and Vanilla Beige. Two additional interior colours, Sports Gray and Sports Red, will be dedicated to the 3.3T Sport and the high trim 2.0T models.

Driving Character - Agile Yet Safe, Dynamic Yet Quiet

The G70 offers three powertrains – 3.3 litre V6 twin-turbo petrol, 2.0 litre turbo petrol and 2.2 litre diesel. The 3.3 litre V6 twin-turbo is at the heart of the enthusiast-focused “3.3 Turbo Sport models,” with 272 kW and 510 Nm.

G70 3.3T Sport’s dynamic and powerful performance includes 0-100 kph acceleration of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 270 kph. Variable ratio steering and electronically controlled suspension are standard, providing agile steering response and an optimal ride and handling experience.

The G70 turbo petrol model is equipped with the Theta-II turbo 2.0 litre GDI engine, with 185 kW and maximum torque of 353 Nm (Sports package: 188 kW).

The G70 2.2 litre diesel model features the R-FR 2.2 VGT engine with 149 kW and 441 Nm.

Dynamic performance features include:

  • Launch Control - maximizes power control during acceleration

The seat positions have been adjusted to lower the center of gravity of the car to maximise performance. To augment the driving experience, the Active Sound Design (ASD) system creates an aural character that reflects the engine load and driving mode settings.

Noise, vibration and harshness have been minimised in the G70 through enhancements in multiple areas, including: vehicle body structure, exhaust system, sound absorption and isolation, suspension and body frame connection, design of side mirrors and door sealing systems.

The performance-focused sedan has been tested under the most challenging environments and surfaces in the world - including Death Valley (U.S.), northern Sweden, the Nürburgring (Germany) and the Alps (Austria) - for driving stability, handling, durability and power delivery.

Best-in-Class Safety

Following the trend of the G90 and G80, the G70 offers the most comprehensive levels of safety in its class. Overall body stiffness and rigidity have been dramatically strengthened. The G70 has also been designed to help protect other pedestrians – when imminent impact with a pedestrian is detected, its active hood function triggers lifting the hood to absorb shock and minimise the risk of injury.

An unparalleled suite of advanced driver assist systems such as Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), Highway Driving Assist (HDA), Blind spot Collision Warning (BCW) and Driver Awareness Warning (DAW) have been added as part of the ‘Genesis Active Safety Control’ to offer the highest level of safety and convenience in its class.

The FCA system provides added safety with newly developed technology designed not only to protect vehicles and pedestrians, but also cyclists on the road. It automatically activates emergency braking through integrated radar-camera sensors when detecting bicycles.

‘Genesis Active Safety Control’ is the brand’s newly labeled advanced driver assist system package previously known as ‘Genesis Smart Sense.’

Genesis aims to receive the highest ratings from both international and domestic organisations including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Korea New Car Assessment Program (KNCAP).

Exceptional Comfort and Convenience

The G70 incorporates a diverse range of advanced technologies that deliver ultimate convenience and connectivity.

An example of this technology is the smart posture control system, initially introduced in the G90. When the driver’s body information is input, the system automatically adjusts the seat, steering wheel, outside mirror and heads-up display to the optimal position, ensuring minimal stress even on long journeys.

The G70 provides a diverse range of advanced convenience and connectivity, including an 8-inch touch screen display supporting MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The G70 will also be the first vehicle in Korea to feature server-based voice recognition technology, using Kakao’s artificial intelligence platform ‘Kakao I.’

For the best audio performance, a 15-speaker Lexicon surround-sound system is equipped to provide an audiophile-level acoustic experience.

“There is a unique energy and diverse global culture to New York that is fitting for Genesis, and we are excited to unveil the GV80 Concept here,” said Head of Genesis Brand, Manfred Fitzgerald. “This concept is an important milestone for the brand to share our vision of the future, introducing a further expansion of our product portfolio.”

Exterior Design & Inspiration

The GV80 Concept presents a modern and refined interpretation of a capable sport utility vehicle, building on the strength of architecture and the beauty of natural elements. The design team thoughtfully expressed these ideas throughout the exterior and interior of the vehicle in utilizing exceptional materials and purposeful forms to create a feeling of desire. The concept’s overall shape is distinguished by its proportions, finely balanced with dominant surfaces, exhibiting sophistication and functionality that conveys the SUV’s infinite versatility to the driver.

The front of the GV80 Concept showcases the signature Genesis crest grille proudly presented by the lower grille surround, which establishes a dominant centre spine that runs through the length of the vehicle. The diamond motif mesh grille and wide-set horizontal quad headlamps that encase jewel-like graphics assert the SUV’s powerful stance and stately presence. Below the lower setting, an aerodynamic fascia channels air through precision facet cut-outs around the front wheels and side rocker panels.

These warm-toned alloy elements signal key structural components and technical features alluding to the GV80 Concept’s functionality and alternative powertrain. The rest of the exterior panels’ bespoke Ice Granite finish provides a subtle contrast against the rest of the precision detailing.

The elegant posture of the GV80 Concept is defined by a parabolic line that establishes the confident side profile, and visually connects the front and rear to further reveal the SUV’s athletic and nimble nature. Muscular fenders house bold 23-inch mesh alloy wheels designed to reduce weight and cool the large brake system. Electronic door handles sit flush underneath the concept’s dynamic crease line for enhanced aerodynamic performance and simplicity.

The core of the vehicle is extended through the rear, visualized by the centre spine detail in the upper rear brake light. Further fortifying the GV80 Concept’s athleticism, slim quad lamps elongate towards the powerful rear quarter panel for a planted stance. Laser fibre optic technology in the tail lamps produces a truly unique Genesis lighting signature at night. The lower rear fascia provides soft visual intrigue and function with purposely integrated vents to cool elements of the alternative powertrain.

Interior Design Concept

Designed in harmony with the refined exterior, the interior of the GV80 Concept creates a sophisticated environment for its passengers through superior craftsmanship, creative attention to detail and advanced technology.

The interior cabin immediately greets passengers with a bridge instrument panel that stretches from door to door creating a welcoming and spacious ambience. A wide 22-inch curved display set in the instrument panel cascades into the driver’s cluster, which combines the precision of a classic speedometer with the immersive flow of information from a digital display.

Further uniting the interior and exterior, the GV80 Concept’s side pillars are constructed with a structural truss design viewable from inside and outside the vehicle. This detail brings in the exterior environment, promoting a unique interaction with the outside landscape. Additional versatile storage compartments are creatively integrated throughout the SUV concept in the lower doors for ultimate convenience.

Interior HMI Concept

The GV80 Concept’s interior features an innovative Human Machine Interface that offers users intuitive operation and function control through the use of a new multi-function interactive controller with capacitive touch. Each passenger is invited to a tailored seat with access to the capacitive touch inlays and an individual entertainment system allowing for control of a customized user experience.

Interior Colour and Materials

To complement the refined exterior, the GV80 Concept’s beautifully crafted interior environment showcases a curated combination of high-quality materials, vibrant colours and rich textures that lend themselves timeless sophistication. The GV80 features exquisite semi-aniline leather interior, with quilted diamond stitching on the interior door panels, seat inserts and centre console side, harmonizing with the facet details on the exterior.

The meticulously-wrapped rich leather on the upper instrument panel is contrasted with distinctive Architexture suede on the instrument panel bridge that elegantly surrounds the front passengers for an interesting tactile accent. Echoing the warm alloy metal from the exterior, the trim detail below the bridge indicates the flow of cabin air and is highlighted by polished aluminium trim pieces.

Embracing its urban and outdoor spirit, the GV80 Concept’s ash wood centre console and floorboards provide a contemporary organic element to contrast against the other authentic materials. Finally, the SUV’s cargo area features an elegant tonal and texture effect by Architexture suede, dark grey leather and slate ash wood that are both visually appealing and functional with contrasting sleek metal tie downs.

Revealing the concept in New York is a fitting opportunity for GENESIS.”

Design Inspiration

The design teams took inspiration for the New York Concept from modern luxury lifestyles and products, plus the early success and progression of the GENESIS brand. They merged this confidence with forms from nature, and the process of transforming raw materials to create an uncompromised expression of pure technological art.

Designed to express the GENESIS modern view of luxury, the New York Concept brings a fresh perspective to the segment by offering the unexpected, yet still satisfying the needs of modern luxury buyers. Alongside the car’s inherent performance and comfort characteristics, the New York Concept adds fresh, daring and unexpected touches through blending cultural heritage with modern art and technology.

Exterior design

The nature-inspired character of New York Concept is seen through simple yet powerful forms with voluminous surfaces and coherent features. The overall shape of the concept is characterised by a long bonnet and expansive dash-to-axle ratio, visualising the car’s performance-oriented nature and its resulting athletic stance.

At the front of the car, the New York Concept demonstrates power and confidence as growing attributes of the GENESIS line-up. The prominent, upright grille is visually supported by sleek, horizontal headlights. The deep inner edge of the light is characterised by a pixelated light guide, giving a sophisticated, vibrant appearance. Air flow guides sit below the lights, channelling air through the forward wheel housing. Pronounced front guard volumes, enhanced with longitudinal crease lines, complete the concept’s road-focused attitude.

From the side, the sleek and tapered cabin emphasises powerful shoulders, bringing visual power over the rear wheels and quarter panels, adding to the impression that the New York Concept can deliver the power expected of the luxury sports sedan. Short front overhangs contrast with longer rear overhangs, completing the proportions of an elegant and refined performance car.

The rear perspective of the New York Concept is distinguished by a low and sleek rear deck, further enhanced by strongly tapered body flanks. The slim, elongated tail-lights echo the headlights’ vibrancy, reinforcing the sensuous and luxurious character of the exterior. With its visually expressive form, the New York Concept is complemented by thorough and creative attention to detail. The unique treatment of the bonnet and side vents blend function with style, creating a new precision aesthetic. The integrated vents for the bonnet, front guards and quarter panels improve aerodynamic performance, a reflection of the hybrid GENESIS model’s fuel efficiency capabilities.

The front and rear door handles sit flush with the bodywork, integrated along the belt line of the New York Concept, further enhancing aerodynamic performance with simplicity in design. The exterior panels are finished in a custom-designed Ceramic Blue colour, while copper-coloured inlays in the lower bumper fascia and sills convey the uniquely modern approach of GENESIS design and material language.

Interior design concept

The interior of the New York Concept further projects the future design direction of GENESIS. It expresses a high-tech and sophisticated ambience, emphasised by the use of an advanced information control unit with a distinctively curved display.

Eliminating some of the negatives often associated with increased technological content in a luxury vehicle, the design team took an innovative direction for the instrument panel design. A 21-inch floating, curved screen incorporates driver instruments and multimedia functions, creating potential for new, sculpted forms for the front seat occupants. The digital display is combined with classic analogue driver instruments. The concave screen and the convex instrument panel complement each other in an aesthetic interaction while transmitting visual lightness to the interior. The open steering wheel design is ergonomically formed to facilitate visibility of the instruments while enhancing handling control.

A logical and spacious centre console divides the interior space lengthwise into two separate halves. Combined with the curved, floating screen, the Central Control Panel (CCP) creates a new user experience through a tactile and considered control layout. Finely polished GENESIS Concept aluminium inlays for the interior incorporate a handful of essential functional switches and reflect the GENESIS commitment to deliver high-quality design through exceptional attention to detail.

Four individually sculpted single seats reflect the dynamic attributes of the exterior while acknowledging the GENESIS focus on human-centred luxury.

Interior colour and materials

The concept’s interior showcases meticulously-wrapped full leather interior, with accents of anthracite contrasted with rich tan leather on seats and doors, while sliced suede leather used on the headrest brings a soft tactile accent. Highlighting the visual connection between the instrument panel and the floor console, which to the eye looks as if it is visually floating, the New York Concept uses metal for contrasting effect. Copper-toned, stainless-steel mesh echoes the copper accents of the exterior and demonstrates a new, lightweight textile approach. The New York Concept also features polished aluminium switchgear and functional elements, with small touches of copper applied on exterior accents.

Interior HMI concept

The New York Concept presents a unique Human Machine Interface (HMI) concept. With this innovative concept, GENESIS sets a new standard for user experience and function control. The New York Concept showcases how the instrument cluster and centre stack are merged into one curved horizontal display, allowing a unique driver-oriented architecture.

On top of the instrument panel, embraced in a sleek aluminium casing, hovers a super-wide, curved 21-inch 4K display made by LG. Unique LG Advanced High Performance In-plane Switching technology allows for a greater viewing angle and exceptional richness in colour, resulting in a more spacious ambience. The bowl-shaped Central Control Panel with 3D geometry is ergonomically optimised for usability and forms an electronic centrepiece of this unique HMI concept. This ergonomic optimisation allows for intuitive single- and multi-touch finger swipes, while also enabling handwriting recognition and circular finger movements - particularly useful when scrolling through long music or telephone lists.

The user interface presents all relevant information at a glance, combining touchpads with the advantages of modern rotary dial-based interfaces. Additionally, a 3D gesture-control sensor allows the operator to ‘throw over’ specific content from one area of the screen to another, raising the freedom for personalising the display information.

The New York Concept provides a glimpse into the next-generation driver interface, ready to handle the growing complexity of a connected, digital world, where user-friendliness safety and functionality set the standard.

01) Styling

Led by key design members of Hyundai Motor’s new Prestige Design Division, the distinctive appearance of the G90 exudes both confidence and originality. Under the oversight of Chief Design Officer Peter Schreyer, G90 expresses the first interpretation of the design theme ‘Athletic Elegance,’ which harmonises beauty and elegance of movement with dynamism and an explosion of energy.

The G90 exterior design conveys a natural dignity evident in both static and dynamic perspectives. In crafting the G90, the Prestige Design Division aimed to capture the car’s strength and originality, while presenting fresh appeal through innovative styling and sporting proportions.

From the front perspective, the G90 identity is conveyed through a Genesis-family design feature, the ‘CREST’ grille, and crowned with the winged Genesis emblem. Powerfully proportioned, the G90 combines a prominent hood with short overhangs, an unequivocal manifestation of its performance rear-drive architecture. Available full-LED signature headlights (V8 model) flow from fascia to fender – a key design element of the new Genesis brand. On the lower fascia, standard LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) add to the distinctive illumination signature. A unique interpretation of the hexagonal grille also supports a bold and confident front visage.

Inspired by clean, modern lines and effortless elegance, the sedan’s bold lines are accentuated along a distinctive chrome character line to the rear. From there, dual asymmetrical chrome exhaust tips surrounded by a lower fascia chrome accent provide a substantial reminder of power, while vertical full LED light signature elements complete the design message of athletic elegance. Even more, the clean lines of the G90 yield the additional benefit of an exceptional 0.27 Cd for minimised wind noise and enhanced fuel efficiency, a best-in-class for the segment.

With luxurious interior spaciousness, the G90 is available in five colours created to accentuate its distinctive lines. Ranging from Casablanca White and Caspian Black to Manhattan Brown, Santiago Silver and London Gray, the colour palette was painstakingly matched to a wide spectrum of interior environments and sophisticated material selections.

Effortless ergonomics, interior design harmony, convenience and luxurious comfort helped craft the G90 interior design. From the graceful layout of driver controls and genuine, premium material selection, to meticulous craftsmanship, precision leather-stitched instrument panel and an elegant material colour palette, virtually every element of the interior focuses on the passengers.

Extensive consideration has been given to material selection for the G90. The highest-quality, authentic materials adorn the cabin, with ease of operation and intrinsic beauty as fundamental priorities for the interior. Throughout the cabin, the controls for these latest technologies are luxuriously ensconced amid Nappa leather and genuine wood accents, delighting the senses and cosseting the occupants in a first-class ambience. Even the Lexicon® audio speaker grilles convey an ultra- luxury ambience, precision-machined of high-grade aluminum alloy.

Passenger space is a key component of interior comfort and design, and the new G90 has significantly improved spaciousness, derived in part from a generous 11cm increase in wheelbase for greater passenger comfort. This increase in wheelbase also resulted in reduced overall overhangs when compared with the previous model. Inside the cabin, this translates to superior front headroom (104cm) and legroom (117cm) compared with key competitors.

02) Powertrains

Tuned for maximising driving confidence, a rigorous engine testing regime focused on overall responsiveness, while retaining luxury-class refinement levels. G90 is fitted with a choice of two petrol engines: a 3.3-litre direct-injected, twin-turbocharged V6 engine developing an estimated 272kW @ 6,000 rpm (premium fuel), or the top-trim 5.0-litre direct-injected V8 engine developing an estimated 314kW @ 6,000 rpm (premium fuel). 03) Driving Performance

A fundamental brand characteristic of all Genesis models is the careful melding of sporty agility and refined performance. At the pinnacle of the Genesis line, G90 achieves these often competing goals via an extensive research, development and testing regime.

G90’s engineers worked closely with the company’s European Test Centre based at Germany’s demanding Nürburgring circuit, and also put the car through its paces in controlled environments at Hyundai’s California Proving Grounds in the Mojave Desert. Through an intensive program of testing and development, the engineering team refined G90 ride, handling, steering feel and suspension damping to deliver an exhilarating driving experience with overall dynamics that are simultaneously luxurious, sporty and refined. G90 also features Intelligent Drive Mode with four distinct driving settings: Eco, Smart, Sport, and Individual (driver-specified parameters).

These four driver-selectable modes provide unique calibration settings for suspension, steering, stability control, engine, transmission and available AWD, allowing the driver to determine G90 driving character based on personal driving preferences, road quality, or traffic conditions. Further, G90 includes proprietary “Smart Shift and Drive Control” automatic transmission technology that analyses driving style and adjusts shift character, engine torque response and suspension damping in real-time driving conditions.

As a foundation for better handling precision, G90 body rigidity has been increased, with an overall bending rigidity six-percent higher than the Mercedes-Benz S550. To achieve this impressive rigidity, G90 utilises 52 percent Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS), a full 300 percent more than the previous generation, along with more than 183 metres of advanced structural adhesives.

To achieve the smoothest possible ride comfort while retaining engaging dynamics, G90 is fitted with a multi-link suspension design for minimised camber and toe changes throughout the suspension travel range. Rear cross member bushings were also improved from a rubber to a hydro construction. In addition, the Genesis Adaptive Control Suspension system with electronic damping control smoothly and precisely controls body motions throughout the range of dynamics with minimal compromises to ride comfort. This adaptive control suspension, sourced from Sachs/ZF®, offers independent damping control for both rebound and compression strokes of suspension travel for improved body and yaw control.

G90 motor-driven power steering was further refined with optimised assist-and-recovery calibrations and increased steering torsion bar rigidity for more precise steering responsiveness. Large, 19-inch turbine-blade design alloy wheels with 245/45R19 front and 275/40R19 rear performance tires ensure immediate response to steering inputs and precise handling character.

An advanced H-TRAC® AWD system is available with either powertrain, for confident control under adverse driving conditions such as ice or snow. This system features an electronic transfer case with active torque control and offers dual-mode Sport or Normal calibrations that are linked to the Intelligent Drive Mode. The H-TRAC system can direct up to 40 percent of available torque to the front axle, for enhanced traction in adverse conditions such as ice or snow. In more ideal conditions, the H-TRAC Sport calibration features a high degree of rear-drive bias for sportier cornering and acceleration characteristics, with up to 90 percent of available torque distributed to the rear axle. In addition, with the H-TRAC systems’ Economy mode, up to 100 percent of available torque is distributed to the rear wheels for maximum driveline efficiency.

G90 brakes were also improved for greater fade resistance with larger, 376mm rotors (5.0 V8 model) and thicker (34mm) front rotors, with dedicated cooling vents in the front fascia for enhanced front brake heat dissipation. Rear brake performance was also enhanced with larger, 340mm rotors. G90 brake calipers use a 4-piston fixed design in front and a 2-piston fixed design in the rear.

04) Safety

‘Safety without compromise’ summarises the passenger-centred philosophy that has directed the development of the G90. Its world-class safety technologies accompanied by outstanding structural rigidity combine to increase its overall safety quotient. G90 is expected to receive a 5-star safety rating (NHTSA), and a Top Safety Pick+ (IIHS), based on preliminary internal crash tests. All individual crash scenario classifications are expected to receive a Good rating or above.

The G90 body structure has been strengthened with a dual-layer member connection design and a newly optimised load-dispersion structure for the small overlap crash test. A variety of class-leading standard safety technologies work to minimise risk and maximise protection for the driver, passenger and other road users. These advanced safety features include: Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) with Pedestrian Detection, Smart Blind Spot Detection (SBSD), Lane Keep Assist, Rear Cross-traffic Alert, Driver Attention Alert, Dynamic Bending Light headlights with High Beam Assist, and a 360-degree Multi-view Monitor. In addition, G90 also features Smart Cruise Control with stop/go capability. For enhanced visibility for the driver, the Head’s-up Display has been increased from 19cm to 25cm with enhanced illumination.

05) Convenience Features

Simplicity and intuitive function were key elements in the development of G90 convenience features, delivering the ultimate carefree ownership experience for owners. In developing the car’s specifications and trim levels, every effort was made to provide customers with everything most customers would need without anything unnecessary or overly complicated.

Seating comfort was a key development target for G90. Ergo-design seating, including an electronically-controlled, 22-way power driver’s seat with power shoulder adjustment, was approved by the German campaign for healthier backs, Aktion Gesunder Rücken. The G90 passenger seat offers 16-way adjustment for optimal comfort. All front seat positions, side mirrors and steering column position are controlled by an integrated memory system. Front seat positions offer both heating and ventilation.

The upscale rear outboard passenger seats are electronically-adjustable in 12 ways (14-ways for the right seat position) on the 5.0 V8 model, ensuring the highest levels of comfort. These luxurious seats were carefully developed via thorough analysis of the renowned “Stressless” seat design. In addition, the rear seats offer heat, with ventilation on 5.0 V8 models. The rear seats offer an unusually high comfort level on V8 models, including power: slide linked with recline, shoulder-adjusters, rear lumbar support, 4-way head restraints and a rear integrated memory system controlled by a dedicated rear console selector.

Many of the car’s features rely on interaction with the car’s audio visual system displayed via a luxurious 12.3-inch high-definition widescreen in the center stack, operated via DIS control knob. The screen plays a key role in enhancing the ease of parking and tight urban maneuvering for drivers. A one-megapixel digital camera is activated when parking, simultaneously sharing the screen with a high-resolution 360-degree Multi-view monitor with steering guidelines. A heads-up display helps drivers to find key driving data while keeping their eyes safely on the road ahead. In addition, a seven-inch high-resolution TFT-LCD display enhances data recognition for the driver from the center gauge cluster.

Depending on individual taste or mood, one of seven interior ambient lighting mood lamps can be selected, and LED lamps are positioned in the overhead console and cabin lighting positions. From the outside mirrors, Genesis-logo approach lamps are projected on the ground for enhanced visibility while approaching the vehicle.

Ultra-high fidelity was an absolute development requirement for the G90 audio system. Presenting a concert-like experience, the Lexicon® Premium Sound System boasts QuantumLogic® Surround sound with 17 speakers, a 10-inch subwoofer. Developed in concert with Grammy Award-winning artists and producers, QuantumLogic® Surround is a revolutionary new audio algorithm that is designed to mimic the acoustics of the original performance and recording space, identifying individual voices and instruments and re-authoring these into a precise multi-channel soundstage.

In addition, Clari-Fi® music reconstruction technology rebuilds sonic details typically lost in the compression process for digital music sources, adjusting fine musical nuances based on the overall quality of the audio signal. This helps to further maximise the high-fidelity listening experience with every track. On the 5.0L V8 model, the rear seats feature dual rear monitors with 9.2-inch high-definition screens that can be controlled from the rear seat Driver Information System controller.

Elsewhere in the finely-appointed cabin, the ventilation system offers a segment-first three distinct zones of control with a cabin CO2-level sensor and Air Quality System (AQS) that allows additional fresh air to enter the cabin when needed. The G90 steering wheel also offers a heating function as standard. G90 passengers can now conveniently charge their mobile devices with the latest Qi wireless-charging standard technology and utilise both front and rear USB ports. For ease of entry, the G90 includes a proximity key with an integrated push-button start system.

Power rear- and rear-side-window sunshades are also standard. From the outside, a power Smart Trunk with hands-free opening adds convenience whenever the owner’s hands are full for convenient loading and unloading, and all doors have power door closure function. For adverse weather, G90 also offers a windshield wiper de-icer, rain-sensing wipers and an auto-defogging windshield.

06) Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH)

Engineers focused on segment-leading low NVH as a key differentiator for G90, dedicating hundreds of hours to fine-tuning every aspect of noise reduction and comfort enhancement. This obsessive attention to detail has resulted in G90 boasting best-in-class ratings for in-cabin noise levels, a major achievement in this critical area of refinement in the luxury segment.

With special sound-absorbing materials throughout the cabin, to the application of specially laminated acoustic film glass on every window, the G90 cabin is a pleasant refuge for its passengers. Road noise was further minimized through the development of a specialised Helmholtz design, with hollow, two-piece wheel construction, and an integral sound absorption chamber for the 19-inch alloy wheels. This design produces an innovative resonance effect which provides sound absorption for reduced tire noise levels in addition to lower unsprung weight for more responsive handling and better ride comfort.

Sound engineering also extended to the suspension set-up, optimised at test centres around the world for high-speed cruising, while minimising cabin noise intrusion and body vibration. Wind noise in the cabin has been reduced through the application of a 3-layer weather-strip seal on all doors. Special sound insulation now also includes the rear glass, while carpet and headliner insulation thickness have been increased by more than 20 percent. In the rear quarter panel, a special plate foam pad has been added as a special sound block for rear passengers.

For the powertrain, the intake ducting now employs a variable-type valve for minimised intake resonance at various engine speeds. In addition, transmission-housing rigidity has been improved with external rib enhancements and increased thickness leading to reduced NVH. In the engine bay, a special single continuous powertrain seal has been applied for reduced sound penetration into the cabin. Underneath G90, underbody airflow has been improved for reduced turbulence and wind noise, greater efficiency and enhanced stability at higher speeds.
