Honda has invested in advanced bi-directional charging technology at its European R&D site in Offenbach, Germany, which is helping to balance demand and store energy more efficiently across the facility.

The new charging system incorporates renewable energy generation and is a test bed for hardware that will be available to private households in the future.

The technology installation in Germany follows the debut of the domestic Honda Power Manager Concept at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The concept previewed a fully integrated energy transfer, which takes power from the grid and can return stored energy from electric vehicle (EV) batteries – through ‘Vehicle-to-Grid’ or ‘V2G’ technology. This latest trial installation at Honda’s Offenbach site applies the same principles on a larger scale.

Through bi-directional energy transfer, electricity is drawn from the grid or is generated by photovoltaic solar panels and is used to charge EVs plugged in to the system. While an EV is plugged in, the energy held in its battery can be transferred back to help stabilise the grid at times of short or surplus supply.

Jörg Böttcher, Vice President of Honda R&D Europe, said: “With the installation of the latest bi-directional charging technology at our R&D site in Germany, we are adding the next technology to our Smart Company project, which will further enhance our research activity in the field of zero-emission society and future mobility.”

With the help of the bi-directional hardware and with the technology of The Mobility House*, Honda aims to optimise energy management at its European R&D campus, maximising the use of renewable solar power in particular. The project is testing the interaction, compatibility and power flow between specific electrical components, including the renewable energy cells and the EV batteries. The installation represents a collaboration between Honda R&D Europe, energy service provider The Mobility House and Swiss technology company EVTEC.

The investment in the bi-directional energy transfer technology further enhances the world’s most advanced public charging station for plug-in vehicles, which was launched at Honda R&D Europe in summer 2017. Its state-of-the-art 940V capability can deliver up to 150kW of energy, enabling as many as four vehicles to charge simultaneously with different types of connectors. Since its installation in June, the EV charging station has supplied power for 447 charge sessions and has saved 3.87 tonnes of CO2.

Honda Australia’s family oriented CR-V SUV has received a 5-star safety rating in the latest Australasian New Car Assessment Program.

As Australia’s leading independent vehicle safety organisation, ANCAP rated the Honda CR-V as one of the top choices among the latest tests. Honda Australia Director, Stephen Collins said: “The fifth-generation Honda CR-V already offers an unsurpassed combination of style, versatility, technology and value.

“As a family-oriented SUV, CR-V customers and those considering purchasing a new CR-V can be assured that the CR-V’s Advance Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure puts a priority on crash safety.”

The ACE body structure offers energy-dispersing crash stroke front frame rails, hot-stamped ultra-high-strength steel door rings and sills, and tailor-tempered B-pillars and rear frame structures, which help to protect occupants in a collision, while also helping minimise weight.

The structure uses the engine compartment to efficiently absorb and disperse collision energy during a head-on vehicle-to-vehicle collision. It features a frame structure composed of a highly efficient energy-absorbing main frame, a bulkhead upper side frame that absorbs the upper part of the collision energy, and a lower member that helps prevent misalignment of the frames of the vehicles involved. This design disperses collision forces over a larger frontal area, which enhances energy absorption of the engine compartment, reduces the chance of deformation of the passenger compartment and results in enhanced occupant protection. At the same time, the structure reduces the chance of vertical or lateral misalignment between the vehicle and other vehicle's safety structures.

During a frontal collision, a conventional body structure generally concentrates the loads from the impact through two pathways running longitudinally through the lower portion of the frame. The body structure’s front side frame is designed to prevent cabin deformation by distributing forces through multiple major load bearing pathways and away from the passenger compartment. The overall result is a high level of bending and twisting rigidity for the body, combined with enhanced crash-worthiness with no additional weight penalty.

ANCAP’s specialised safety rating program provides Australian consumers with transparent information on occupant and pedestrian protection levels and the collision avoidance capabilities different vehicles would deliver in the most common types of serious crashes.

Honda Sports EV Concept:

Honda exhibited the world premiere of the Honda Sports EV Concept, a concept model that combines EV performance and AI (artificial intelligence) inside a compact body with the aim to realise the joy of driving the user can feel with a sense of unity with the car.

Honda Urban EV Concept:

Built on a newly-developed dedicated EV platform, the Honda Urban EV Concept is a concept model which indicates the technology and design directions for Honda’s future mass-production EV models. A new model based on this concept will go on sale first in Europe, and then in Japan in 2020.

Honda NeuV:

The Honda NeuV is an EV concept model that explores the potential of mobility products, which will be further expanded by automated driving technologies and AI. NeuV makes judgments about the driver’s state of stress based on facial expressions and/or tone of voice and provides assistance to the driver to support safe driving, and by learning the driver’s lifestyle and preferences, provides suggestions to the particular driver, realising communication between driver and mobility.

Honda CR-V:

The Honda CR-V is an SUV model enjoyed by customers in more than 160 countries around the world. The lineup of this all-new CR-V includes a series-first hybrid model equipped with Honda’s original “SPORT HYBRID i-MMD” two-motor hybrid system, which will be available in front-wheel drive and 4WD variants. The all-new CR-V is already on sale in various markets, including Australia and is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in 2018.

Clarity PHEV:

Based on Honda Sport Hybrid i-MMD, the output and capacity of the battery were increased, and the EV range of more than 100 km was made possible. The Clarity PHEV, a new-generation plug-in hybrid model, features an exterior form with low vehicle height, spacious cabin that seats 5 adults and a large-capacity cargo area. The Clarity PHEV is scheduled to go on sale in Japan in summer 2018.

Honda RoboCas Concept:

The Honda RoboCas Concept is a small-sized electric mobility product created to make people’s dreams and ideas come true. Different types of carrying space with a canopy can be freely combined with a compact-sized vehicle body base which has a driving function.


Honda Riding Assist-e:

The Honda Riding Assist-e is an experimental motorcycle model Honda developed by applying proprietary balance control technologies Honda amassed through its research in the field of robotics. Honda’s aim for this model is to offer motorcycle riders greater peace of mind and make life with motorcycles more fun for people by mitigating the risk of a fall.

Neo Sports Café Concept:

Honda exhibited the world premiere of the Neo Sports Café Concept, which is a concept model for a naked sport model that combines the fun and beauty of a sport bike with a new-generation motorcycle package.

PCX Electric:

The PCX Electric is an electric scooter equipped with a high-output motor developed independently by Honda as well as the Honda Mobile Power Pack, a detachable mobile battery pack. Honda PCX Electric is scheduled to go on sale in 2018 in the Asia region including Japan.

PCX Hybrid:

Honda newly-developed an original hybrid system designed for motorcycles. This compact hybrid system employs a high-output battery and ACG starter to assist the engine and enables PCX Hybrid to realize a “torqueful” riding performance. Honda PCX Hybrid is scheduled to go on sale in 2018 in the Asia region including Japan.

Gold Wing Tour /Gold Wing

Honda exhibited the Japan premiere of the Honda Gold Wing grand touring model, which has been evolving as a flagship motorcycle model of Honda, and will underwent a full model change. The all-new Gold Wing features new technologies including a newly-developed horizontally-opposed 6-cylinder engine, 7-speed DCT and Honda’s original double wishbone suspension. The GOLDWING is planned to go on sale through Honda's new "Honda Dream" sales channel to be launched in April 2018.

Super Cub 110, a commemorative model recognising the 100 million-unit milestone

The Super Cub 110 is a special model Honda produced exclusively for the Tokyo Motor Show to commemorate the achievement of the 100 million-unit global production milestone this year and the 60th anniversary next year for the Super Cub series.

Super Cub C125

The Super Cub 125C inherited and evolved the attractive design and functionality as a personal commuter from the first-generation Super Cub (C100). This new 125 cc model features the latest equipment such as a smart key and electric seat opener and yet realizes ample power for a comfortable riding experience.

Cross Cub 110

Featuring a crossover style which will look good for both urban area riding and outdoor activities, the Cross Cub 110 proposes a new value of Honda Cub motorcycles. As a model oriented toward recreational use, the “tough” image is being emphasised with the adoption of a leg shield and wider tyres.

Monkey 125:

A 125cc horizontal, single-cylinder engine was installed to the signature body of the Honda Monkey with a sense of intentional deformation which comes from the short & tall body proportion unique to the Monkey series. Adopting unique features such as LED lights and digital meters, the Monkey 125 explores the new appeal of the Honda Monkey model.

Honda Exhibits at the TOKYO CONNECTED LAB 2017

Honda Ie-Mobi Concept (pronounced: ee-a mo-bee – “Ie” is a Japanese word for “home”): Honda Ie-Mobi Concept is an electrical mobility product that seamlessly connects a home and the car. Honda Ie-Mobi Concept makes it possible to supply electricity from the car to the home and from the home to the car. Moreover, this vehicle can be used also as a small room with the size of approximately 4.95m2.

Honda Fure-Mobi Concept (pronounced: foo-ray mo-bee – “Fure” comes from the Japanese word “Fureai” which means interaction, contact or touch):Honda Fure-Mobi Concept was developed under the theme of human-to-human interaction. This model has a size equivalent to that of a one-person electric wheelchair, but seats two people and realises smooth travelling on walkways or indoor spaces. Honda developed this model with the hope that this vehicle, which enables two people to move around together, will make people more proactively want to enjoy an outing.

Honda Chair-Mobi Concept:

Honda Chair-Mobi Concept is a chair-type mobility product that can be casually used in indoor or outdoor spaces. Its compact size and ability to turn in a small radius enable it to come into a tight space. The height-adjustable seating face features a function to maintain a level seat even while it is driven uphill or downhill. Honda developed this model as a mobility device that is capable of manoeuvering as flexibly as a pedestrian so that it can be used in various occasions.

Honda Ai-Miimo Concept

Honda Ai-Miimo Concept was developed based on the Honda Miimo, an electric self-propelled robotic lawn mower. By installing AI, it was turned into a model that communicates with its user and supports the user in their everyday life. Honda developed this model with the hope to create an existence that goes beyond the framework of a “product” but brings smiles and pleasant moments in people’s lives just like a pet or family member.

The eagerly anticipated, all-new Honda Civic Type R delivers an unrivalled combination of every day useability and track-honed dynamism. Powered by a 2.0-litre VTEC Turbo engine producing 228 kW of power and 400 Nm peak torque, and mated to a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission with rev-matching function, the Type R has been tuned to deliver flexible and exhilarating performance.

The Honda Civic Type R has been engineered from the ground up to deliver the most rewarding driving experience in the hot hatch segment – both on road and on the race track. It retains the heritage of Honda’s high performance hatchback bloodline, combining expertly-tuned front-wheel drive chassis dynamics with aggressive design and finely-honed aerodynamics.

The move to one global platform for all models in the 10th-generation Civic line-up paved the way for the return of the Civic Type R to Australia. Globally, this is the fifth-generation of the legendary Civic Type R – the original Civic Type R was launched as a Japan-only model in 1997, while only the third generation model was previously available in Australia.

The new Civic Type R was developed in parallel with the regular Civic hatchback, as part of the same development program that delivered mutual benefits to the dynamics and refinement of both variants.

A new single-mass flywheel coupled with the slick six-speed manual gearbox reduces clutch inertia weight by 25 per cent and combines with a seven per cent lower final gear ratio to enhance response under acceleration. The rev-matching function smooths shifts, eliminating undesirable transmission ‘shock’ associated with excessive or insufficient revving. The rev-matching function further enhances the joy of driving a manual transmission sports car.

A lightweight, highly rigid bodyshell – the product of innovative new engineering and construction techniques – complements the lower centre of gravity and a sophisticated new suspension system, contributing directly to the vehicle’s rewarding dynamics.

The advanced Dual-Axis Strut Front Suspension system reduces torque steer and enhances on-the-limit cornering and steering feel. At the rear, Type R’s new multi-link suspension enhances ride comfort as well as high speed stability. Dual-pinion variable-ratio Electric Power Steering is new to the Type R, using a similar system as featured on the core Civic range, but optimising the variable ratio to deliver a more direct and secure feel at high speed.

Maximum power output from the optimised and refined 2.0-litre VTEC Turbo engine is 228 kW at 6500rpm, while peak torque of 400 Nm is developed from 2500-4500 rpm. It is both the quickest-accelerating and fastest car in its class, as well as the fastest front-wheel drive car ever around the Nürburgring Nordschleife with a record lap time of 7min 43.8sec.

The 2017 Type R has a new selection of driving modes, adding a ‘Comfort’ setting to the default ‘Sport’ and track-focused ‘+R’ modes – all of which tailor the suspension compliance, steering geometry and throttle response of the car on demand. Compared to the previous Type R, the more significant difference between the damping forces of each driving mode gives the new car greater useability across a wider range of road surfaces. Notably, Comfort mode affords a high degree of compliance, coupled with a less urgent level of steering and throttle response.

The aggressive silhouette makes a confident statement about the Civic Type R’s dynamic character. Wider, longer and lower than any of its predecessors, the all-new Type R has short overhangs and muscular, taut lines, while a sharp and aggressive ‘face’, pronounced wheelarches and sculpted front and rear intakes point to its performance and sporting intent.

A comprehensive aerodynamics package includes a smooth underbody, front air curtain, a slim rear wing and vortex generators at the trailing edge of the roof line. These features contribute to a best-in-class balance between lift and drag, delivering superior levels of high speed stability.

The all-new interior of the 10th-generation Civic has significantly improved levels of quality, comfort and refinement. Front and rear seat occupants benefit from greater visibility and more space than ever before in which to experience the Type R’s blistering performance, while the large boot and innovative side-sliding tonneau cover ensure the car retains its position as the most practical and versatile of high-performance hatchbacks.

New Civic Type R was engineered as part of the core development program for the 10th-generation Civic range – the largest global project for a single model in Honda’s history. Its arrival in North America marks the first time that any Honda-badged Type R has been officially sold there, while it returns to Australia for the first time since the third-generation Civic Type R was discontinued in 2012.

Honda Australia has sharpened the customer appeal of the Honda Jazz, announcing a national Drive Away price for the spacious, versatile hatch. Jazz VTi manual and VTi CVT automatic will benefit from Drive Away pricing on all 2017 build YM18 Jazz stock, a significant saving for first-car buyers shopping for a safe and reliable vehicle in the light-car segment. The deal will run until all MY17 build stock is sold.

Jazz VTi (MT) will be $15,990 Drive Away and the Jazz VTi CVT automatic will be $17,990 Drive Away. Metallic and Pearlescent paint is $495 extra.

Overall, the Drive Away deal represents a significant saving for customers. The Jazz has recently benefited from a host of upgrades, including the addition of a 7-inch touch screen audio system and satellite navigation for the VTi-S and VTi-L models.

Honda has revealed an all-new electric vehicle, the Urban EV Concept, at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. The concept car is built on a completely new platform, and sets the direction for the technology and design that will appear on a future battery electric Honda production model.

The concept was officially introduced by Honda Motor Co. President and CEO, Takahiro Hachigo, during his press conference speech. “This is not some vision of the distant future; a production version of this car will be here in Europe in 2019,” he added, confirming that the concept is set to be launched within two years.

Exterior design

Honda’s Urban EV Concept showcases advanced technology within a simple and sophisticated design. Its low and wide proportions give the car a planted, muscular stance that hint at sporty driving performance. Its compact proportions mean it has a total vehicle length 100mm shorter than the Jazz supermini.

The Honda emblem on the concept is backlit in blue, which previews a new styling feature for the company‘s future EVs. At the front of the car, interactive multilingual messages can be displayed between the headlights, including greetings, advice for other drivers on the road, or charging status updates.

Interior design

The driver’s outward visibility from the Urban EV Concept is excellent thanks to slim A-pillars and a wide windscreen that appears to sweep around the entire front of the car. Entry and exit from the vehicle is via rear-hinged coach doors. The electric charging cable connection is housed on the bonnet.

Honda’s Urban EV Concept can accommodate four occupants, across two bench seats finished in different materials. To create a lounge feeling, the front row is upholstered with natural grey fabric, with the seat backs, squabs and arm rests embellished with contemporary wood finish accents. The seatbelts for the rear bench are fixed in the middle of the seat, allowing the belt to retract out of the way before a passenger exits the car.

The same wood finish wraps around a large ‘floating’ dashboard console. This houses the steering wheel column, a set of simple control buttons, and a panoramic display screen. The dashboard itself is completed by a wrap-around screen that runs behind the console and extends into the doors. The main dashboard screen presents a range of vehicle information including remaining battery level. Whilst the extended door screens function as the car’s wing mirrors through digital camera displays.

Honda Automated Network Assistant concierge

Honda’s Urban EV Concept showcases the company’s vision for a world where mobility and daily life are seamlessly linked. The on-board advanced Honda Automated Network Assistant acts as a personal concierge, which learns from the driver by detecting emotions behind their judgments. It can then apply what it has learnt from the driver’s past decisions to make new choices and recommendations.

Honda Power Manager

New methods for managing energy transfers between the grid, homes and electric vehicles could provide revenue opportunities for EV owners in the future. Honda’s Power Manager Concept, revealed alongside the Urban EV Concept in Frankfurt, is a smart system that can store energy more efficiently, releasing electricity generated by renewable sources back into the home or selling it back to the grid.

Electric Vision

Honda’s ‘Electric Vision’ strategy, launched at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, includes the development of a dedicated electric vehicle platform, featuring fully-electric powertrain technology. Key parts of the powertrain development will include a high-density, lightweight battery pack, integrated heat management and the evolution of energy transfer functions – both to and from the vehicle.

After more than six years since it was last offered for sale on a Honda vehicle locally, the famous red ‘H’ badge has made its long-awaited return to Australia, with the first shipment of the all-new Civic Type R arriving into Melbourne over the weekend. The first car to drive off the ship at Port of Melbourne’s Webb Dock facility and officially mark the return of the Type R name to Australian shores was a striking Rally Red example, which is earmarked to serve as a media evaluation vehicle over the coming months.

It was followed by around 60 customer cars that will soon be on their way to Honda dealerships across Victoria, South Australia and the Northern Territory, before being delivered to their new owners. More shipments of the all-new Honda Civic Type R will arrive over the coming weeks, with more than 400 vehicles scheduled to arrive before the end of the year to satisfy the significant early demand for the Nürburgring Nordschleife lap-record holder.

Honda Australia’s new product onslaught continues unabated with the announcement of a refreshed Honda Jazz range, which will start arriving into dealerships this month. In an 18-month period that has seen the complete line-up of Honda vehicles in Australia either refreshed, updated or all-new models arrive, the updated Honda Jazz is the latest Honda model to receive an array of styling and technical upgrades.

Featuring an enhanced sporty design, the 2018 Year Model Honda Jazz is fitted with new front and rear bumpers, a new front grille and, on the VTi-L grade, new bi-LED headlights with LED high and low beam, as well as LED daytime running lights (DRLs).

Fresh wheel designs and colour treatments, along with a new paint colour, Phoenix Orange* pearlescent, complete the exterior enhancements. In total there are seven colours available: Rally Red, Phoenix Orange*, Brilliant Sporty Blue*, White Orchid*, Lunar Silver*, Modern Steel* and Crystal Black*.

The refreshed 16-inch alloys are available on both the VTi-S and VTi-L models while power continues to be provided by Honda’s reliable and fuel efficient 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine, which produces 88 kW of power and 145 Nm peak torque. Inside there are a host of visual upgrades across the range, the biggest being the addition of a 7-inch touch screen audio system. Built in satellite navigation is now standard in both the VTi-S and VTi-L.

Both the VTi-S and VTi-L come standard with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).

The Honda Jazz is also one of the most versatile light cars available, with its renowned Magic Seats offering 18 different configurations for customers who need a vehicle that not only is easy on the pocket to own, but can easily be converted into a versatile load lugger when required.

Customers can also add a level of individualisation with the keenly priced Luxe Pack, available on all variants. The Luxe Pack adds black alloy wheels, door visors, bonnet protector, alloy pedals, carpet mats, door sill garnish and a luggage tray. The Luxe Pack has a Recommended Fitted Retail Price (RFRP) of $1,498.

Honda Australia has announced pricing for the hotly anticipated all-new Honda Civic Type R ahead of its arrival in October.

The all-new Honda Civic Type R will offer an unrivalled combination of every day usability and track-honed dynamism. Standard equipment for Australia features a 228 kW 2.0 VTEC Turbo engine, six-speed manual transmission with rev-matching function, adaptive dampers with three driving modes, Brembo brake package, 20-inch alloys, Honda Sensing safety suite, plus class-leading interior space.

Celebrating 25 years of the famed Type R badge, the fifth-generation Civic Type R will arrive in a single feature-packed specification at $50,990*.

“Type R is the ultimate expression of Honda putting the enthusiast at the centre of everything it does. So it was very important for Honda Australia to bring the famed Type R name back with the all-new Civic Type R,” Honda Australia Director, Stephen Collins said.

“As a record-holder around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, it’s clearly the fastest, most dynamic Type R model ever sold in Australia. Enthusiasts across the country are going to absolutely love it.

Importantly, the 2.0-litre VTEC Turbo Civic Type R also completes an exciting all-new Honda Civic line-up following the recent arrival of the dynamic Honda Civic sedan and hatch.

“It’s the fundamental strength of the all-new Honda Civic platform, which enables Type R to achieve such remarkable performance,” Collins said.

Building on the tenth-generation Civic, Type R brings model-exclusive spring, damper and bushing settings, a new Dual-Axis front suspension set-up with aluminium lower arms and steering knuckles for improved at-the-limit cornering and reduced torque steer, while a new multi-link rear suspension enhances stability under braking. There is also an adaptive dual-pinion electric power steering system with variable gear ratio and a helical limited-slip front differential.

The Honda Civic Type R features with three driving modes: Comfort, Sport (default) and +R. The driver-selectable modes adjust steering and throttle response, transmission rev-matching, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) threshold, and Adaptive Damper System. The hero colour for the all-new Honda Civic Type R will be the iconic Championship White premium paint, however, customers will also have the choice of Rally Red (flat), two pearlescent colours in Crystal Black or Sonic Grey, plus a metallic Brilliant Sporty Blue. Since Honda opened the Type R order books in May, the response from customers had been very strong.

“We’ve already taken more than 250 customer orders and more than 5,000 people have registered their interest. So it’s clear there’s a lot of pent-up customer demand for the return of the Civic Type R,” Collins said.

The 2018 Honda Civic Type R will be sourced from the Honda of the UK Manufacturing facility in Swindon, UK.
