The Genesis brand has introduced its all-new luxury G70 sedan. The Genesis brand officially launched the G70 at the Hyundai Genesis Design Centre within the Namyang R&D Centre, with Dr. Woong-Chul Yang, Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group and key officials of the brand. The G70 is set to go on sale on 20th September in the Korean market.
“The Genesis G70 is the latest demonstration of our dedication to delivering innovative, customer-oriented vehicles,” said Vice Chairman Yang. “We will continue to focus our R&D efforts on the development and expansion of the Genesis brand. It is a great point of pride to have Genesis showcase what a true luxury brand of Korean origin can present to our customers.”
The Genesis G70 is an athletic and elegant luxury sedan offering a graceful and dynamic exterior, function-oriented interior with three different powertrains – the 3.3 litre V6 twin- turbo petrol, 2.0 litre turbo petrol and 2.2 litre diesel. The 3.3 litre V6 twin- turbo engine boasts an impressive 0-100 kph acceleration time of 4.7 seconds.
The G70 also features high levels of advanced driver assist systems such as Highway Driving Assist (HDA), best-in-class safety with nine standard airbags and active hood function, and a high level of connectivity with server-based voice recognition technology, using Kakao’s artificial intelligence platform.
Hot stamping methods, extended use of structural adhesives and torsional rigidity, have been enhanced to improve overall body stiffness. Genesis will offer a differentiated customer experience to be provided through Genesis membership programs.
Completing the Genesis sedan lineup
The G70 is a luxury sedan completing the Genesis brand’s sedan lineup, along with the flagship G90 and G80, and will further establish the brand’s presence in the luxury market.
In November 2015 the Genesis brand was born with its sights set to compete with the world’s top luxury car manufacturers, as a Korean brand. The Genesis brand strives to make a positive difference in the lives of discerning customers, becoming an important element of their lifestyle. Furthermore, its goal is to deliver excellence in performance and design through progressive and innovative approaches.
Initially, Genesis launched its flagship G90 sedan in December 2015 and large G80 sedan in July 2016 in Korea. Since the brand’s inception, Genesis has made significant strides, selling more than 150,000 units to date with strong performance in both the Korean and U.S. markets.
Genesis has also received many accolades, most recently, ranking highest among premium car manufacturers in the J.D. Power 2017 U.S. Initial Quality Study (IQS) study, topping all 13 brands in the premium segment.
The G70 marks the completion of Genesis sedan line-up and the brand will now start strengthening its model range with the introduction of SUVs, and potentially alternative powertrains. Genesis plans to roll out new products to expand its presence and coverage across the global market, and by 2021 six models are expected to feature in its product portfolio.
An Exterior with Genesis’ Unique Design Identity
The all-new G70 represents the future direction of the Genesis brand’s design identity. Athletic elegance is represented in the exterior design as the car captures both beauty and tension, like an athlete poised to perform.
Luc Donckerwolke, Head of Genesis Design, said, “At Genesis, we shape fascination and desire with the passion, dedication and talent from our designers. We modulated all parameters from the Genesis DNA to tailor a sports sedan. This challenge required the highest skills and know-how. The G70 is designed to captivate all senses with its sensuous and tensioned muscular volumes.”
The long hood and short front overhang, elegant roofline and multi-spoke alloy wheels characterize a sleek, dynamic profile view subtly highlighted by dark/smoke-chrome fender aero trim.
The hockey stick daylight opening and parabolic sidelines further express the unique design signatures of Genesis, displaying fast and dramatic energy with voluptuous forms and smooth surfaces.
In the front and side views, the G70’s large crest-type grille, character lines beginning from the emblem of the voluminous hood, air intake functions, and LED daytime running lights (DRLs) express the muscularity/solidity of the car.
Two distinctive linear LED DRLs on each side of the large crest grille foreshadow the future Genesis signature quad lamps.
In the rear, the LED rear combination lamps, which continue the quad lamp theme, along with a raised trunk lid and compact bumper designs give the G70 a poised character. The rear lamps, evolved from the preceding G80, have been stretched to the end of the rear to convey a wide and dynamic stance.
A Sophisticated, Driver-Focused Interior
G70’s interior achieves both high-function and excellent fit and finish. To emphasize functionality, interior packaging is driver-focused with simplicity being prioritised. A horizontal layout brings a sense of stability and the driver-focused packaging provides a comfortable driving environment.
The three dimensional switches of the centre fascia and dials enhance functionality, while the sport-grip steering wheel adds to a driver-friendly and enjoyable driving experience. For materials Genesis designers chose aluminum door handles, quilted leather door panels, metal speaker grills and many quality soft touch materials throughout the interior. Quilted patterns and Nappa leather seats further add to the dynamic yet elegant interior.
The G70 offers a wide range of unique and sophisticated colour options that properly reflect global trends to meet client demand. The G70 will offer customers ten exterior colours: Platinum Silver, Carbon Metal, Marble White, Titanium Black, Racing Gray, Graceful Gray, Lapis Blue, Royal Blue, Blazing Red and Umber Brown.
A new finishing method separates small, evenly distributed aluminium particles and high luminosity colours, maximising the brilliance of the exterior colours. Five interior colours will be available: Obsidian Black, Sandstorm Gray, Velvet Burgundy, Tobacco Brown and Vanilla Beige. Two additional interior colours, Sports Gray and Sports Red, will be dedicated to the 3.3T Sport and the high trim 2.0T models.
Driving Character - Agile Yet Safe, Dynamic Yet Quiet
The G70 offers three powertrains – 3.3 litre V6 twin-turbo petrol, 2.0 litre turbo petrol and 2.2 litre diesel. The 3.3 litre V6 twin-turbo is at the heart of the enthusiast-focused “3.3 Turbo Sport models,” with 272 kW and 510 Nm.
G70 3.3T Sport’s dynamic and powerful performance includes 0-100 kph acceleration of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 270 kph. Variable ratio steering and electronically controlled suspension are standard, providing agile steering response and an optimal ride and handling experience.
The G70 turbo petrol model is equipped with the Theta-II turbo 2.0 litre GDI engine, with 185 kW and maximum torque of 353 Nm (Sports package: 188 kW).
The G70 2.2 litre diesel model features the R-FR 2.2 VGT engine with 149 kW and 441 Nm.
Dynamic performance features include:
- Launch Control - maximizes power control during acceleration
- Rack-mounted, motor-driven power steering (R-MDPS) and multi-link rear suspension - provides precise handling and ride comfort
- Dynamic torque vectoring system - improves vehicle cornering control
- Mechanical limited slip differential (M-LSD) – allows safe driving capabilities in low friction road conditions such as rain, snow and ice
The seat positions have been adjusted to lower the center of gravity of the car to maximise performance. To augment the driving experience, the Active Sound Design (ASD) system creates an aural character that reflects the engine load and driving mode settings.
Noise, vibration and harshness have been minimised in the G70 through enhancements in multiple areas, including: vehicle body structure, exhaust system, sound absorption and isolation, suspension and body frame connection, design of side mirrors and door sealing systems.
The performance-focused sedan has been tested under the most challenging environments and surfaces in the world - including Death Valley (U.S.), northern Sweden, the Nürburgring (Germany) and the Alps (Austria) - for driving stability, handling, durability and power delivery.
Following the trend of the G90 and G80, the G70 offers the most comprehensive levels of safety in its class. Overall body stiffness and rigidity have been dramatically strengthened. The G70 has also been designed to help protect other pedestrians – when imminent impact with a pedestrian is detected, its active hood function triggers lifting the hood to absorb shock and minimise the risk of injury.
An unparalleled suite of advanced driver assist systems such as Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA), Highway Driving Assist (HDA), Blind spot Collision Warning (BCW) and Driver Awareness Warning (DAW) have been added as part of the ‘Genesis Active Safety Control’ to offer the highest level of safety and convenience in its class.
The FCA system provides added safety with newly developed technology designed not only to protect vehicles and pedestrians, but also cyclists on the road. It automatically activates emergency braking through integrated radar-camera sensors when detecting bicycles.
‘Genesis Active Safety Control’ is the brand’s newly labeled advanced driver assist system package previously known as ‘Genesis Smart Sense.’
Genesis aims to receive the highest ratings from both international and domestic organisations including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Korea New Car Assessment Program (KNCAP).
Exceptional Comfort and Convenience
The G70 incorporates a diverse range of advanced technologies that deliver ultimate convenience and connectivity.
An example of this technology is the smart posture control system, initially introduced in the G90. When the driver’s body information is input, the system automatically adjusts the seat, steering wheel, outside mirror and heads-up display to the optimal position, ensuring minimal stress even on long journeys.
The G70 provides a diverse range of advanced convenience and connectivity, including an 8-inch touch screen display supporting MirrorLink, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The G70 will also be the first vehicle in Korea to feature server-based voice recognition technology, using Kakao’s artificial intelligence platform ‘Kakao I.’
For the best audio performance, a 15-speaker Lexicon surround-sound system is equipped to provide an audiophile-level acoustic experience.

Additional exterior options for an individual look
The updated BMW 3 Series range receives a vibrant new metallic paint option, known as Sunset Orange. As before, Sport Line is standard on BMW 318i, 320i, 330i and 330e. A new, 18-inch double-spoke light alloy wheel finished in Jet Black accents is available as a no-cost option for Sport Line-equipped models.
Opting for the M Sport Package also opens up a new cost-option 19-inch bi-colour light alloy wheel, with Orbit Grey the prominent colour. Based on Australian customer feedback, the BMW 340i is now fitted with responsive fixed-ratio power steering in line with the rest of the range. Variable Sports Steering – previously fitted as standard to the BMW 340i – remains as an option for those seeking an adaptive system.
Those opting for the 340i can choose between Luxury Line or the M Sport Package at no extra cost. Both Luxury Line and M Sport Packages are optionally available across the rest of the range, with Luxury Line at no-cost for 330i and 330e variants.
Latest infotainment system showcases driver-focused interior geometry
Following on from the BMW 4 Series LCI, the BMW 3 Series range is now updated with the latest iDrive6 infotainment system. This system is integrated into the 6.5-inch colour display of Navigation System Business (standard to 318i, 320i and 320d) or the 8.8-inch colour touchscreen on vehicles fitted with the Navigation System Professional.
The iDrive6 operating system uses a customisable screen that offers intuitive app-style live ‘tile’ displays that can be reordered by the user, via the traditional iDrive controller, by natural voice recognition or by touching the screen on models equipped with Professional Navigation.
For added peace of mind, BMW’s latest Speed Limit Info system is also fitted as standard.
Also new is the multi-functional instrument display, which is optionally available on 3 Series Sedan and Touring variants. This system adapts the display to the chosen driving mode, providing key information to the driver whether in Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport or Sport+. Inside the 3 Series, the cabin has been redesigned with a driver-focused geometry, while elegant double-stitching for the instrument panel creates further interior ambience.
Additionally, a new Cognac Dakota leather upholstery has been added as an option across the range. A dark Aluminium Carbon trim package with Pearl Chrome finishers is now exclusively available for vehicles equipped with the M Sport Package.
Innovations package further advances technology
Available across both 3 Series Sedan and Touring ranges, the Innovations Package blends key additional technologies into one value-added option package. These are tailored to the model grade as below. The BMW 318i Innovations Package adds the Navigation System Professional as well as Parking Assistant, Extended Smartphone Connectivity and the new multi-functional instrument display.
Opting for the BMW 320i or 320d (in Sedan or Touring form) brings the above refinements as well as Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function.
The 330i gains Parking Assistant, Extended Smartphone Connectivity, multi-functional instrument display and Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, while the 330e mimics the 330i barring the multi-function display, instead using a specific instrument set that integrates with the 330e’s iPerformance eDrive system.

Condition Based Servicing
All maintenance requirements for the BMW 3 Series range is controlled by the Condition Based Servicing (CBS) system.
With CBS, sensors and advanced algorithms monitor and calculate the conditions in which a vehicle is used, including mileage, time elapsed since its last service, fuel consumption and how a vehicle is driven. Based on the information captured, maintenance requirements are determined, identifying whether an annual vehicle inspection or oil service is due.
Selected BMW service and maintenance costs can be covered by a single, one-off advance payment with BMW Service Inclusive (BSI), which is available in two packages: Basic or Plus.

Holden has announced the next step in its rejuvenated small-car strategy, with confirmation the all-new Astra sedan will launch in 2017. Astra sedan joins Astra hatch and Astra coupe siblings to expand Holden’s world class small-car line-up, giving customers their choice of world-class small car offering.
Utilising the same Delta 2 architecture as the Astra hatch (with GM Europe’s Russelsheim HQ as the homeroom), Astra sedan is a great example of Holden’s ability to handpick the best vehicles for Australia from the GM global portfolio, being the only brand to offer both the Opel-based hatch variant and Chevrolet-based sedan variant in its line-up.
Holden’s Director – Planning and Program Management, Marinos Panayiotou, said Holden is leveraging GM’s global product portfolio and, with Astra sedan, customers have a vehicle that effortlessly blends functionality and comfort, with more than a touch of luxury.
“Last year, Holden committed to launching 24 new products by 2020, and Astra sedan represents the thirteenth of those, joining Astra hatch and Astra coupe to continue building a world-class small car range,” said Panayiotou.
“Astra sedan is a truly global vehicle, developed in Europe, manufactured in Korea and finished with design elements and significant engineering input from Holden.
“Astra’s luxurious interior is complemented by advanced driver and connectivity technology in addition to progressive exterior styling which, when you add to the hatch variant, gives Holden a strong line-up in the small-car segment.”
Based on the US-designed, Chevrolet Cruze, Holden’s Astra sedan boasts key local input to give this global vehicle a uniquely Australian flavour to appeal to Australian customers.
Local Input Key To Astra Sedan Identity
Designed in North America, Astra sedan also received bespoke styling treatment from the renowned GM Australia design team, with a sophisticated front grille and fascia to give the Astra range a more cohesive appearance.
“Sharing the same architecture as the Astra hatch, the new Astra Sedan assumes a rational, sophisticated persona to expand on the appeal of the sports styled hatch,” said Ferlazzo.
“Our Australian designers have styled a unique Holden face with exclusive new front fascia and grille, closely aligning with the next generation Commodore to give a more cohesive look to not Astra, but to the wider Holden product range.”
Astra sedan also benefits from in-depth local engineering carried out at Holden’s Lang Lang proving ground to ensure it exhibits the refinement and composure displayed by its sibling, Astra hatch.
Holden’s Executive Director – Sales, Peter Keley, said Astra sedan grows Holden’s small-car line-up whilst the move would also simplify Holden’s small-car strategy.
“Whether it’s the world-class sports hatch, stylish coupe or sophisticated sedan, the Astra nameplate communicates European engineering and global design strength a strong reputation for reliability, earned over a 30 year association with Holden,” said Keley.
“With the addition of Astra sedan, Holden’s small car range is looking stronger than ever, couple that with the recently launched Trax, Colorado and Trailblazer, and our focus on bringing the best new vehicles for our customers is crystal clear.”
Going on sale at the start of February, Trax will be the next vehicle introduced to the Holden range and the latest to demonstrate a renewed focus on in-car technology and stylish design.
With Astra sedan hot on the heels of Trax, it’s clear Holden showrooms are in the midst of a major product overhaul.
The next-generation Astra sedan has been confirmed for an Australian release in May.
Alfa Romeo Australia has confirmed a four-model line-up for the highly anticipated Giulia premium sedan range when it launches in Australia in February 2017. Based on an all new rear-wheel drive architecture, all Giulia models benefit from perfect 50/50 weight distribution, best in class power-to-weight ratios, and innovative engine and driver technologies.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia stands out for its distinctive Italian design, which is expressed through an impeccable sense of proportions drawn from the flexible technical architecture, as well as the sophisticated simplicity and quality surfaces used both inside and out.
The all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia’s Australian line-up will comprise of five models across four equipment grades – Giulia, Super, Veloce and range-topping Quadrifoglio. There are three petrol and one diesel engine variant, all with an eight-speed automatic transmission standard.
The entry level Giulia is powered by a new turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 147kW and 330Nm, the latter on tap from 1750-4000rpm. This endows the Giulia with both performance and efficiency: 0-100km/h in just 6.6 seconds, and a combined cycle fuel economy of 6.0L/100km.
Standard safety specification includes new efficient active safety systems, including Forward Collision Warning (FCW) with Autonomous Emergency Brake (AEB) and pedestrian recognition, Integrated Brake System (IBS), and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) – all of which contributed to the all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia being awarded a five-star EuroNCAP rating, with 98 per cent protection result for adult occupants, the highest score ever achieved by a car, despite the more severe EuroNCAP evaluation system introduced in 2015.
The entry-level Giulia comes generously equipped with leather upholstery, 18-inch alloy wheels, bi-Xenon headlamps, keyless go, stop/start technology, satellite navigation, dual-zone climate control, rain sensing wipers, cruise control, rear parking sensors and a reverse parking camera.
As with all Alfa Romeos, the Giulia’s interior focus is on the driver with the Alfa DNA rotary driving mode selector, a 3.5-inch TFT colour cluster instrument panel, UConnect 6.5-inch display infotainment system with DAB and Bluetooth connectivity, and an 8-speaker audio system.
Next in the range is the Giulia Super, available with a choice of 147kW/330Nm petrol engine or a new-generation 2.2-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel which produces 132kW and 450Nm (from 1750-3750rpm). This engine is a veritable fuel miser, rated at just 4.2L/100km on the urban/country combined cycle, yet still capable of 0-100km/h in 7.1 seconds.
In addition to the base Giulia’s already generous specification, the Giulia Super sports an even higher grade of leather which also adorns the dash and doors, an eight-way power driver’s seat, active cruise control and heated steering wheel. Safety also steps up with the inclusion of blind spot monitoring.
Australians looking for even more sporting prowess in their distinctly Italian sports sedan will be drawn to the Giulia Veloce, powered by a higher-performance version of the turbo 2.0-litre petrol engine, tuned for 206kW and 400Nm. The Giulia Veloce accelerates to 100km/h in 5.8 seconds, yet sips just 6.1L/100km on the combined cycle.
The Giulia Veloce also gains a number of specification advantages over the Giulia Super, including Alfa SDC adjustable suspension, limited-slip rear differential, 19-inch Veloce alloys and an uprated braking package, with calipers distinctively finished in red.
Inside, the Veloce’s cabin steps up the visual performance with aluminium dash inserts and pedals, a sports leather seats and steering wheel, and a premium sound system.
Those who want the best in life will have eyes only for the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, the pinnacle of the Giulia range and the Nurburgring lap record holder. The Quadrifoglio packs peerless performance and a class-leading power to weight ratio thanks to Alfa Romeo’s lightweight technology and its Ferrari-inspired 375kW twin-turbo V6 engine.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio accelerates to 100km/h in just 3.9 seconds and has a top speed beyond 300km/h. Thanks to clever cylinder deactivation technology, the Quadrifoglio’s fuel economy rating is just 8.2L/100km.
The Giulia Quadrifoglio sets new benchmarks in sophisticated performance with its sports bodykit-enhanced silhouette, 19-inch forged alloy wheels, and bi-Xenon headlamps with Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFLS) and automatic high beam.
Like the exterior, the Giulia Quadrifoglio’s interior evokes the twin themes of passion and premium performance typically the preserve of thoroughbred Italian supercars. The leather-wrapped surfaces throughout feature contrast stitching, along with aluminium and carbonfibre highlights.
The leather and Alcantara front sports seats are eight-way, electrically adjustable, and generously bolstered to help occupants withstand the Giulia Quadrifoglio’s prodigious cornering forces. Premium appointments include a Harmon Kardon 14-speaker sound system, and a bespoke 8.8-inch multimedia screen housing the entertainment system, satellite navigation and climate air-conditioning controls – easily accessed via a centrally mounted rotary dial.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio was named Top Gear UK’s 2016 Car of the Year.
The all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia range will go on sale in Australia in February 2017. Full specification details and pricing will be confirmed closer to launch.
Lighter, more dynamic, more economical and fully connected
The seventh generation of the BMW 5 Series Sedan will cut a sporty, elegant and stylish figure when it hits the roads in markets around the world in February 2017. Further enhanced dynamics, an unbeatable line-up of assistance systems, an unmatched degree of connectivity and a new and innovative operating system are the most important new features. The new BMW 5 Series Sedan therefore has all the tools it needs to continue the remarkable success recorded by its predecessors; more than 7.6 million BMW 5 Series cars were sold across its first six generations.
“The seventh generation of the BMW 5 Series points the way into the future, as we have defined it with our NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy. We see technological leadership, emotionally rich products and digitalisation as essential factors in achieving success. With the expansion of our model portfolio in the large- vehicle classes, we are satisfying the wishes of many customers. I’m in no doubt that the new BMW 5 Series will set new benchmarks technologically, but also have huge emotional appeal. It remains the epitome of the business sedan,” says Harald Krüger, Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW AG.
Superior driving pleasure and unsurpassed aerodynamics. Rigorous application of the BMW EfficientLightweight lightweight design concept, with increased use of aluminium and high-strength steels, reduces the weight of the 5 Series Sedan by up to 100 kilograms from that of its predecessor.
The newly designed chassis, a low centre of gravity, BMW’s hallmark even weight distribution and a lightweight body offering exceptional torsional stiffness combine a wonderfully dynamic driving experience with the long-distance comfort for which the BMW 5 Series is renowned. Various chassis options such as Integral Active Steering, which can now be teamed with xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive, add further talents to a dynamics- focused overall package designed to ensure the BMW 5 Series once again stands at the top of its class. The drag coefficient of the new, 4,935 millimetre-long BMW 5 Series Sedan (Cd = 0.22 at its most efficient) sets the benchmark in its class.
The next step to automated driving
A wealth of assistance systems are on hand in the new BMW 5 Series to offer the driver unbeatable support – not only at critical moments but also in less demanding situations at the wheel, such as traffic jams, slow-moving traffic and monotonous stretches of motorway. To this end, it is fitted as standard with a stereo camera, which teams up with optional radar and ultrasound sensors to monitor the area around the car. New features in the BMW 5 Series alongside the evasion aid and Crossing traffic warning are the Lane Change Assistant and Lane keeping assistant with active side collision protection.
The latter keeps an eye on the lane markings and the area around the car, and actively helps the driver to avoid looming collisions by applying corrective steering inputs.
The BMW 5 Series also takes another step towards automated driving with extended functions for the optional Active Cruise Control (ACC) system and Steering and Lane keeping assistant. These include adoption of speed restrictions, which the optional Intelligent Speed Assist communicates to the cruise control system (the driver can adjust this figure by +/– 15 km/h / 9 mph). From rest to 210 km/h (130 mph), the car can relieve the driver of acceleration, braking and steering duties, as desired.
The intelligent Auto Start Stop function now adjusts its responses to the route and traffic conditions and therefore offers even greater driving comfort.
Intuitive usability and extensive comfort
With even greater user-friendliness as its goal, the new BMW 5 Series is equipped with the latest-generation iDrive system. In top specification, it displays navigation, telephone and entertainment features, plus vehicle functions, on a high-resolution 10.25-inch screen.
The system can be operated using the iDrive Controller, by voice command or gestures, or by touching the display controls directly, as the driver wishes. The large, tile-style panels can be arranged as desired and show the content of the underlying menus in constantly updated form. The latest-generation full-colour BMW Head-Up Display has a projection surface that is 70 per cent larger than before and displays traffic signs, telephone listings, radio stations, music tracks, navigation instructions and warnings from the assistance systems.
Maximising the levels of on-board comfort are extended storage options, greater legroom for rear-seat passengers and comfort seats with massage function, not to mention innovative seat operation using touch sensors and four-zone climate control complete with ionisation and discreet air fragrancing. Special Synergy Thermoacoustic Capsule (SYNTAK) engine encapsulation technology, the acoustic glazing for the windscreen and the acoustic headliner bring about another noticeable reduction in noise levels inside the car. All headlight variants specified for the BMW 5 Series Sedan come as standard with LED technology. Available as an option are Adaptive LED Headlights with variable light distribution including adaptive roundabout lights and BMW Selective Beam anti-dazzle high beam with a range of up to 500 metres.
Advanced link-up of man, machine and environment
The new BMW 5 Series also offers a compelling proposition in terms of connectivity. Extensive BMW ConnectedDrive features are joined by new services which lavish business travellers with extra comfort and save them time. These include the new ParkNow technology for digital parking space reservation and payment, the On-Street Parking Information intelligent parking space search function and the optional Parking Assistant, which detects empty spots and parks the vehicle automatically. Plus, the Microsoft Exchange service now enables Microsoft Office 365 users to sync emails, calendar entries and contacts and edit them inside their car.
Meanwhile, the optional Remote Parking system allows the BMW 5 Series Sedan to be manoeuvred into even the tightest parking spaces remotely using the car key. And smartphone integration has been further improved – from Apple CarPlay (which, in a first for a carmaker, has been incorporated fully wirelessly), to inductive phone charging and the WiFi hotspot for up to ten devices.
Personalised content through BMW Connected Onboard
BMW Connected, the personal digital mobility assistant from BMW, has been available in Europe since July 2016. The next development stage of the system, complete with additional services, is set to be introduced with the new BMW 5 Series. BMW Connected Onboard gives drivers an overview of their mobility-related information.
Relevant content such as the upcoming navigation destinations and estimated arrival time recorded in their personal mobility agenda are transferred seamlessly into the car from their smartphone and displayed on the personalised screen. Remote 3D View allows drivers to call up three-dimensional views of the area around their car on their smartphone while on the move. And that means they need never lose sight of their car.
BMW 530i and BMW 540i: the new petrol engines
All the engines in the 5 Series Sedan line-up belong to the newly developed, modular BMW EfficientDynamics family of power units. BMW TwinPower Turbo technology imbues all the members of the family with outstanding performance combined with exceptional efficiency. Two diesel engines and two petrol variants will be available from launch, working in tandem with either rear-wheel drive or BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.
The new two-litre four-cylinder in-line engine in the BMW 530i develops peak torque of 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) and maximum output of 185 kW/252 hp. Its fuel consumption in the combined cycle comes in at 5.4 litres/100 km (52.3 mpg imp)*, which means CO2 emissions of 126 g/km – down more than 11 per cent on its predecessor’s figures. The BMW 530i accelerates from 0 - 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).
The flagship engine at launch will be the 250 kW/340 hp unit under the bonnet of the new BMW 540i. This three-litre straight-six produces torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft). Despite its extra output and sharper dynamic edge, average fuel consumption stands at only 6.5 l/100 km (43.5 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions are kept to just 150 g/km*. In xDrive guise, the BMW 540i powers from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in a mere 4.8 seconds.
BMW 520d and BMW 530d: the new diesel engines.
The four-cylinder diesel engine powering the BMW 520d develops 140 kW/190 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft). Fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are 4.1 l/100 km (68.9 mpg imp)* and 108 g/km with the manual gearbox specified or 4.0 l/100 km (70.6 mpg imp)* and 107 g/km with the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The sedan accelerates from 0 - 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.6 seconds (Steptronic). Top speed is 237 km/h (147 mph).
The new BMW 530d likewise does a nice line in dynamics and efficiency. Producing 195 kW/265 hp and peak torque of 620 Nm (457 lb-ft), the six- cylinder in-line unit is clearly superior to the equivalent model in the outgoing range. And yet the BMW 530d also makes do with average fuel consumption of 4.5 l/100 km (62.8 mpg imp)* and CO2 emissions of 118 g/km – an approximately 13 per cent improvement on its predecessor. The new BMW 530d races from 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.7 seconds, and on to an electronically governed 250 km/h (155 mph).
The CO2 champion, the plug-in hybrid and the eight-cylinder sports star.
Not long after the launch of the new 5 Series Sedan, BMW will be adding another three engine variants to the line-up. The 140 kW/190 hp four-cylinder diesel engine will be presented in its most efficient form in the BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition with eight-speed Steptronic. Its CO2 emissions of just 102 g/km are the lowest in the sedan’s class (average fuel consumption: 3.9 l/100 km [72.4 mpg imp]*).
Also to come in March 2017 is a BMW 5 Series Sedan with plug-in hybrid drive system, in the form of the BMW 530e iPerformance. The combination of the BMW eDrive electric drive concept and a four-cylinder petrol engine produces extremely low CO2 emissions of just 46 g/km (2.0 l/100 km)*. System output is 185 kW/252 hp.
In March 2017 the BMW M550i xDrive will take over as the sporting highlight of the new BMW 5 Series range, for the time being at least. Its V8 engine – developing 340 kW/462 hp and 650 Nm (479 lb-ft) of torque – impresses not only with its remarkable performance but also when it comes to efficiency (fuel consumption, combined: 8.9 l/100 km [31.7 mpg imp], CO2 emissions 204 g/km*). The BMW M550i xDrive dispatches the 0 – 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in 4.0 seconds.

Mercedes-Benz Australia has announced pricing and specification for the newest members of the C-Class performance family, the AMG C 43 Sedan, Estate and Coupé. Athletic, sporty and striking in design, the new C 43 models deliver an attractive entry into the world of Mercedes-AMG, and fulfil the brand’s promise of 'Driving Performance' in every respect.
Dynamic growth characterises the corporate philosophy of Mercedes-AMG. A key component is the continual extension of the product range to include all-new models. “The extension of the C-Class family to include the new C 43 models is another component in our growth strategy” says Mercedes-AMG GmbH chairman Tobias Moers. "The ‘43’ models boast the characteristic AMG genes, which are also included in our GT and ‘63’ vehicles, and thus consistently interpret our brand essence of 'Driving Performance' in their segment". Sports car technology and motor racing flair thus become more attainable and appeal to a broader customer base.
For the highly dynamic driving experience that is the hallmark of the AMG brand, the Affalterbach-based development teams have put together a scintillating engineering package: the 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine is combined with the new 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission to provide agile gearshifts. Together with the AMG Performance 4MATIC all-wheel drive and the model-specific chassis technology, this provides the optimum basis for high agility and exhilarating lateral dynamics.
AMG-specific: the 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine
The new 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo engine is part of the BlueDIRECT engine family from Mercedes-Benz. Technical advances including a modified boost pressure allowed the AMG engineers to increase the engine's power output and torque as well as its dynamism and flexibility to typical AMG levels. With up to 270 kW and 520 Nm, the V6 engine sets new standards in its segment. The NANOSLIDE® coating of the cylinder liners is also used in the Formula One engines of MERCEDES-AMG PETRONAS. Especially tough and, therefore, wear-resistant, this coating also reduces friction, thereby contributing to higher efficiency. The AMG powerplant can be identified by the red aluminium insert in the engine cover.
Short shift times, high efficiency: 9G-TRONIC
The 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission has been modified to meet the demands of the Mercedes-AMG C 43 4MATIC. Thanks to the model-specific software application, the AMG developers managed to substantially reduce the shift times of the 9-speed transmission. The multiple downshifts allows even faster short bursts of speed, while the double-declutching function in the "Sport" and "Sport Plus" transmission modes makes for an even more emotive driving experience.
The new AMG C 43 models incorporate high quality materials and an outstanding array of standard equipment to underscore the brand's performance and progressive nature. Arriving as standard across all models are: a Head-up display, AMG Night Package, AMG 19-inch wheels, AMG RIDE-CONTROL sports suspension, Sports exhaust system, LED Intelligent Light System, Panoramic glass sliding sunroof, Burmester® surround sound system and COMAND Online Navigation and Infotainment. "The 2016 Q70 delivers on all accounts – attention to detail, highly crafted materials, exceptional ride comfort, and superior levels of interior quietness."
The refined elegance of the Q70 takes on a new dramatic design which gives the premium sedan an even more upscale image. Its flowing, emotional lines evoke a premium sleekness. At first glance, the new headlights impress immediately. Infiniti's signature LED headlights imply inner intelligence and human insight, leaving an unforgettable impression. The distinctive headlights accentuate the new double arch grille, which now takes on a more three-dimensional look due to the elaborate detail of the high-quality waved mesh finish and chrome surround. The same solid feel is echoed in the new front bumper with integrated fog lights, giving the Q70 a dignified presence on road.
From the front, a strong body line rises from the grille, flowing through the side of the body like a wave and blending into the shape of the new rear LED combination lights, forming a compelling profile that highlights the Q70's sporty stance. At the rear, the new design of the tail lights creates a horizontal flow in motion while the high-quality lighting signature evokes a fresh and classy image. The top line of the boot lid has been flattened while the rear bumper has been slimmed down to create a longer and lower visual impression, further emphasising the premium sedan's sporty and powerful styling. The chrome rear finisher adds a touch of class to the entire rear view.
The top-grade S Premium model grade features a specially designed front bumper that gives an even lower and wider stance with its 20-inch wheels and tyres, while the lower part of the rear bumper is finished in high-gloss black paint to make it look even more athletic. Engine – 3.7-litre Petrol V6
Two powerful and highly efficient powertrains are available, starting with the 3.7-litre V6 petrol engine, which is equipped with Variable Valve Event & Lift (VVEL®) that combines hydraulically-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake side to help improve performance and response. The refined 3.7-litre aluminium-alloy DOHC 24-valve V6 is rated at 235 kW @ 7,000 rpm and 360 Nm of torque @ 5,200 rpm. The 0-100km/h time for the Q70 fitted with the 3.7-litre petrol V6 is 6.2 seconds. Combined-cycle fuel consumption (according to ADR 81/02) is 10.2 litres per 100km travelled in the Q70 GT and 10.8 litres per 100km in the range-leading Q70 S Premium.
Engine – 3.5-litre Petrol Hybrid V6
Also available is an award-winning hybrid powertrain featuring the Infiniti Direct Response Hybrid® system with Intelligent Dual Clutch Control. It combines a 3.5-litre 24-valve DOHC aluminium-alloy V6 and compact laminated lithium-ion battery design with an innovative one-motor/two-clutch motor control. The system's V6 is rated at 225 kW @ 6,800 rpm and 350 Nm of torque @ 5,000 rpm, while the advanced 50 kW electric motor develops an impressive 290 Nm of torque. Infiniti's approach to petrol-electric hybrids is to use the electric motor to boost performance and power, much like how a traditional supercharger would function. This gives the Q70 an immediate surge of torque in the low revs before the 3.5-litre V6 kicks in to push the overall power output to 268 kW.
This hybrid powertrain propelled the then Infiniti M® Hybrid into the Guinness World of Records® as the world's fastest accelerating full-hybrid car in September 2011, and went on to be the only hybrid named in the prestigious "Ward's 10 Best Engines" list in 2012. Billed as a "driver's hybrid", the powertrain delivers speeds that appeal to the sporty driver, and clean power that pleases everyone. The Q70 GT Premium Hybrid travels from 0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds. Fuel consumption in the Q70 GT Premium Hybrid is 6.9 litres per 100km (according to ADR 81/02).
Both engines are matched to an advanced seven-speed automatic transmission that features manual mode, which allows for sportier shifts during spirited driving. Solid magnesium paddle shifters are also fitted to the range-leading Q70 S Premium. The Infiniti Q70 uses a rear-wheel drive configuration.
In line with the focus on the driver, the new Q70 features technologies that enable individuals to customise the driving feel. The unique Infiniti Drive Mode Selector allows drivers to select from four driving modes – Standard, Eco, Sport or Snow – and the integrated control system will adjust throttle sensitivity and transmission mapping to help optimise performance. To encourage eco-driving behaviour, the Eco Driving indicator lamp provides feedback to the driver to assist in optimising fuel use.
Chassis and suspension
The new Q70 uses the advanced Front Mid-ship (FM) platform, which positions the engine behind the front axle, resulting in an optimised front-to-rear weight balance. Laser welding is carried out at critical locations to help enhance lateral bending stiffness, torsional stiffness and suspension mounting point stiffness. Precise handling is provided by an independent double-wishbone design at the front and multi-link independent suspension in the rear, along with front and rear stabiliser bars.
The rear suspension geometry has been designed to provide a quiet, comfortable ride. The available double-piston shock absorbers (S Premium) control damping force according to the frequency of input from the road surface for a smoother ride. To increase ride comfort in the new Q70, Infiniti engineers have further tweaked the shock absorbers to respond with greater precision to inconsistences in the road surface so as to minimise uncomfortable "shaking and bobbing" as well as reduce the vibrations when driving on uneven roads.
The Q70 rides on newly designed 18-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels in the GT and GT Premium model grades. The Q70 S Premium is fitted with 20-inch alloy wheels in a fivedouble- spoke design. A temporary spare wheel is fitted to all model grades.
The steering system on the new Q70 is an electronically controlled speed-sensitive variable-assist power rack-and-pinion design. Helping the driver to maintain control of the vehicle at all times is Infiniti's advanced Vehicle Dynamic Control with Traction Control System. The available Active Trace Control feature also adjusts engine torque and braking at each wheel to help enhance cornering performance.
Advanced safety technologies
Infiniti places maximum value on integral safety, going above and beyond the measures assessed by safety institutions. Central to this strategy is the Infiniti Safety Shield®, a comprehensive approach to safety that offers layered technologies to help provide safety and convenience by monitoring conditions, helping drivers avoid a collision, and helping protect vehicle occupants if one occurs. The Infiniti Safety Shield is fitted to the Q70 S Premium and GT Premium model grades and comprises the following features, six of which are new in the 2016 Q70.
- Predictive Forward Collision Warning system (NEW for Q70) - New to the Infiniti Q70, this new system debuted on the Q50 and warns the driver of risks that lie beyond the driver's field of view. It can sense not only the relative velocity and distance of a vehicle directly ahead, but also of a vehicle traveling in front of the preceding one.
- Around View® Monitor (NEW for Q70) - This system helps takes the hassle out of parallel parking. The feature shows a bird'seye view of the vehicle in relation to parking lines, using four vehicle-mounted cameras that create a 360-degree view of what surrounds the vehicle and displaying it via the indash screen. The system includes Parking Guidance and Moving Object Detection.
- Moving Object Detection - This is a feature integrated with the Around View® Monitor and alerts the driver to moving objects around the vehicle when pulling out of a parking space or reversing.
- Backup Collision Intervention® (NEW for Q70) - This system is a pioneering technology which intelligently senses what the driver may miss when reversing and can apply the brakes momentarily to help avoid a collision with vehicles and objects crossing its path.
- Forward Emergency Braking (NEW for Q70) - This feature detects danger of collision with a vehicle ahead and warns the driver with visual and audible warnings. If the driver fails to decelerate, the system will apply an emergency brake and decelerate to either help avoid a collision or mitigate the damage if the collision could not be avoided.
- Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Lane Departure Prevention (LDP) (NEW for Q70) - These two systems help keep the Q70 from unintentionally drifting into an adjacent lane in case the driver is distracted. Using a small camera behind the windscreen to detect lane markers ahead, the technologies calculate the vehicle's position relative to those lane markers and warn the driver of a potential unintended lane departure with visual and audible cues. If the driver does not steer the vehicle back towards the centre of the lane, the new-for-Q70 LDP system assists the driver with a gentle application of brakes.
- Blind Spot Warning (BSW) and Blind Spot Intervention (BSI) (NEW for Q70) - The driver will also have greater confidence when changing lanes with two technologies that target the blind spots. Blind Spot Warning helps alert the driver to vehicles detected in the blind spot area, while Blind Spot Intervention®, which is new for the Q70, actively intervenes by selectively braking if the driver ignores both visual and audible warnings and attempts to steer into the path of the vehicle in the blind spot.
- Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC) and Distance Control Assist (DCA) - These two features help take the stress out of driving so the driver can arrive at their destination relaxed. The Intelligent Cruise Control covers the vehicle’s full speed range and the Distance Control Assist helps maintain a set distance from the car ahead.
