The fifth generation of Subaru’s best-selling model, the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Forester Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV), has been unveiled at New York International Auto Show. Forester will debut with a long list of new features, including the Driver Monitoring System (DMS) - Subaru’s first-ever driver recognition technology.
DMS will deliver a safer and more comfortable driving experience than ever before, underlining Subaru’s top-of-class safety credentials. It will also be the roomiest, most capable and most versatile Forester ever made. Forester launches on the Subaru Global Platform (SGP) - which has already won accolades in Impreza and XV - and enhances comfort and safety even further.
Every Forester will be powered by the newly-enhanced direct-injection 2.5-litre horizontally opposed, normally aspirated, four-cylinder Boxer engine.
With around 90 per cent new components, the engine offers the perfect balance of excellent driving and environmental performance. Symmetrical AWD and enhanced X-Mode provide outstanding driving, combined with the off-road drivability expected of an SUV. Reverse Automatic Braking helps to avoid collisions when reversing and reduces damage in collisions.
Forester will also offer its roomiest cabin to date, with innovative packaging enhancing comfort and practicality. The new model features packaging that allows all occupants to share comfort and enjoyment, balancing easy handling with a spacious interior, and user-friendly features including, the DMS.
Australian Forester specifications will be announced in the second half of 2018, with vehicles expected in showrooms around September. New Forester is a key part of Subaru Corporation’s global strategy. In line with Subaru’s “Dynamic x Solid,” design philosophy, the new design combines the hardiness of an SUV with user-friendly comfort and convenience.
The SGP is expected to achieve class-topping collision safety and hazard avoidance, along with handling that responds exactly as the driver intends, plus comfortable drivability. Other core technologies include the latest generation of the award-winning EyeSight driver- assist system.

Subaru Corporation has unveiled the Subaru VIZIV Tourer Concept at the 88th Geneva International Motor Show. Since the debut of the first Subaru VIZIV Concept in 2013, Subaru has produced a series of themed models embodying the brand’s vision for the future of making cars that deliver “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind to its customers.”
Designed on a tourer theme, the VIZIV Tourer Concept unites Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive layout and Boxer engine with Subaru’s expertise in driving performance, practicality and safety. In anticipation of widespread future deployment of automated driving technologies, advanced driver-assist functions include the next-generation EyeSight driver-assist system and other devices to reduce driver fatigue on long journeys.
Subaru’s design and development will advance in directions indicated by the VIZIV Concept models. The name VIZIV has been coined from the phrase “Vision for Innovation.”

By also incorporating further enhancements to EyeSight driver-assist technology, radar, and highly accurate GPS and navigation systems, Subaru continues to pursue ultimate levels of safety in the aim of eliminating accidents.
Steve Glenney and Andy Sarandis have taken out this year's Targa North West in a 2015 Subaru WRX Sti.
The overnight leaders stretched their lead over the final five stages to finish clear of Paul Stokell and Jason Page in a 2014 Lotus Exige by just under four minutes, with Tony Quinn and Kate Catford claiming third, a further 52 seconds back in a 2001 Porsche 911 Turbo. After taking a 37 second lead, GT2 frontrunners Paul Stokell and Jason Page extended their lead over Peter Nunn and Keith Johnstone in a Porsche GTS, to take out the class by a comfortable one minute 39 seconds. Alan Roe and Michael Lloyd finished third.
Glenney and Sarandis also took the honours in GT4, with Crichton Lewis and Adam Kudra finishing second, also in a Subaru WRX Sti almost ten minutes back. Nathan and Nicholas Stokes finished third, to make it a Subaru trifecta on the podium. For Glenney, he was thrilled at how the car performed over the whole weekend.
"The weekend went well, brand new car, reliable, fast, safe and easy to drive as ever, so great weekend and good to get a good result, and Andy did a fantastic job next to me," Glenney said. "It was a great podium result; one, two, three for Subaru, so the Buckby boys are going well," Glenney added.
It was a tremendous weekend for Graham Copeland and Josh Herbert in their 1941 GMC Jimmy Special, as they led from start-to-finish to take out Shannons Classic by a margin of eight minutes 29 seconds. Nik Prieston and Dylan Braithwaite, in a 1976 Fiat Abarth 131 Rallye had a consistent weekend, to claim second place.
Copeland was understandably thrilled with the result.
"It's awesome; it's my first Targa North West title and Josh did such a fantastic job also," Copeland said. "The roads were fantastic; the Hellyer Gorge North stage is probably the best Targa stage I've ever done," Copeland added.
The 1975 Holden Torana of Michael and Daniel Bray extended their overnight lead to take out Shannons Classic GT comfortably by almost 12 minutes from Mick Downey and Jarrod Van Den Akker in a 1977 Holden Commodore, with Geoff Goodwin and Phillip Smith third.
Just 14 seconds separated Tony Quinn and Kate Catford in their 2001 Porsche 911, and Jon Mitchell and Joshua Sutcliffe in a 2006 Subaru WRX S204 after the opening day in Early Modern, however Quinn dominated the final day, increasing his lead over the five stages to claim victory by 55 seconds. Richard Woodman and Marcus Towle have taken out the GT Sports Trophy in a 2004 Subaru WRX Sti. They increased their lead over Geoff Storr and Steve Caplice in their 1978 Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV at every stage, to take out the class by over 16 minutes.
In TSD Trophy it was Jeffrey Wilson and Ian Samson in a 2010 Subaru WRX Sti who finished well clear of Luke Anear and Alan Stephensen in a 2017 Ford Focus RS. Round two of the 2018 Australian Targa Championship is the running of Targa Tasmania from 16th - 21st April, to be followed by the inaugural Targa Great Barrier Reef from 31st August to 2nd September. The Championship finishes with Targa High Country from 9th - 11th November.

Subaru unveiled its VIZIV Performance Concept at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show. The VIZIV series of concepts embodies Subaru’s vision for the future of making cars that deliver “Enjoyment and Peace of Mind.”
The first sedan body of the series, the VIZIV Performance Concept symbolizes superior Subaru driving performance and the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) layout, powered by a Boxer engine honed over more than five decades of development.
In sports sedan form, it conveys the concept of driving enjoyment that Subaru continues to pursue. In anticipation of widespread future deployment of automated driving technologies, advanced driver assist functions, combining the next generation EyeSight® system with other devices, are installed.
The name VIZIV derives from “Vision for Innovation.”

The VIZIV Performance Concept draws inspiration from previous production models symbolizing the Subaru driving experience: the Legacy (Liberty in Australia), which defined Subaru as a driver’s car, plus Impreza and WRX, which took the World Rally Championship by storm.
Based on Subaru’s “Dynamic X Solid” design philosophy, this next-generation sports sedan encapsulates driving enjoyment.
Driving performance is highlighted by a low centre of gravity, the dynamic flare of the guards, use of carbon fibre parts in the bumpers, guards and roof, and the glimpse of the exhaust in the rear bumper. The three-dimensional form of the front grille is flanked by hawk-eye headlights while the muscular guards point to the reliability of Symmetrical AWD.

Also unveiled in Tokyo was the BRZ STI Sport. While on-sale only in the Japan domestic market, some elements will be included in a yet-to-be disclosed Australian variant, which will be on sale around end of year. The new range-topping variant in Japan has been jointly developed with Subaru Tecnica International (STI), to achieve new levels of driving performance, quality feel and luxury.
The suspension features flexible V-braces and flexible draw stiffener front suspension. Exclusive 18-inch alloy wheels and high-performance tyres are used. The ZF-made SACHS shock absorbers, and coil springs specially tuned by STI, improve steering response and suppress roll - achieving flexible but highly stable driving performance.
The exterior is highlighted by an exclusive front bumper and adopts glossy black components, emphasizing strength and superb driving performance. The interior colour motif is unique to the variant, featuring Bordeaux red coordination. Quality materials include genuine leather and Alcantara® seats.
Exclusive components are used for the instrument panel and its glare shield, and for the steering wheel, creating a sporty and special space.

Subaru Corporation has completed new test tracks for advanced driver assist technologies at its Bifuka proving ground, in Hokkaido, Japan. The new test tracks will begin use next month.
The proving ground was established in 1995 as a development facility for conducting performance evaluations in cold climates and driving tests on snow. The 361-hectare site includes a variety of test and handling courses, and was expanded to include a high-speed circuit in 2003.
Designed to simulate public roads, the tracks are used to conduct a variety of tests throughout the year. Existing tracks at the proving ground have been upgraded to build the new Advanced Driver Assist Technologies test areas, making conditions closer to those on actual public roads.
BIFUKA PROVING GROUND OUTLINE
High-speed circuit: Total length 4.2 km (existing high-speed course upgraded to bring it closer to actual road conditions)
- New gentle curves simulating those on motorways
- New entry and exit lanes, simulating interchanges and service areas on motorways
- New multi-lane track, simulating a four-lane road

As part of initiatives to strengthen the brand, set out in its mid-term management vision, Subaru Corporation is pursuing technological development with the aim of becoming the top automotive company for overall safety.
Subaru is particularly focused on further enhancement of the EyeSight® driver assist system. The new Japan domestic market Levorg and WRX S4 models, released in August, are both fitted with Touring Assist, a new feature added to EyeSight, as standard equipment.
The new test tracks will be used to further accelerate the development needed for driver assist technologies, as they become increasingly advanced. By 2020, Subaru plans to offer an automated lane-changing function, by adding minimal devices such as digital maps, GPS, and radar to the EyeSight stereo camera.
The company also aims to develop an EyeSight-based technology that prevents collisions with vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians at intersections.
The reinvigorated Levorg range offers greater customer choice in both specification and pricing, with the entry-level 1.6 GT priced from $35,990 Manufacturer’s List Price*. Subtle cosmetic changes to Levorg’s front add to its stylish road presence, aided by newly-designed LED headlights and higher quality LED fog lights.
Subaru Australia Managing Director, Colin Christie, said: “Levorg has opened up a whole new performance niche for Subaru since we launched just over a year ago.
“We can now see even greater opportunity with the addition of two 1.6-litre turbo variants that will make this fun, flexible wagon available to an even greater cross-section of customers. Equally, by adding the prestige of the STI badge to the range-topping 2.0 STI Sport, we’re catering to customer demand for something even more exclusive at the top of the range - so the freshened MY18 line-up represents a significant opportunity for us.”
As with the entire Subaru new car range, every Levorg has an independent five-star rating for occupant safety from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).
NEW 1.6-LITRE TURBOCHARGED ENGINE
Entry-level Levorgs offer the 1.6-litre horizontally opposed four-cylinder Boxer engine, which has never previously been available on any Australian Subaru. Producing 125 Kilowatts of power at 4,800-5,600 rpm and 250 Newtonmetres of torque at 1800-4800 rpm, the compact unit offers even greater fuel efficiency within the expanded Levorg range.
The direct injection engine features direct cylinder injection and a forced induction supercharger intake. Each cylinder has a four-valve Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC) valvetrain and Active Valve Control System (AVCS). It consumes 7.4 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres in the combined cycle.
As with the 2.0-litre variants, it is mated to an efficient Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT).
SMART REARVIEW MIRROR (SRM) – 1.6 GT Premium, 2.0 GT-S, 2.0 STI Sport
The SRM offers better rear visibility. Images of the area behind the car are taken by a camera mounted inside and above the rear gate glass, and displayed in the rearview mirror. It is particularly effective when the standard rearview mirror provides poor visibility in fluctuating light conditions, such as evening or at night; or if passengers or cargo are obscuring the view.
Two modes are available:
- Mirror Mode is used as an ordinary mirror, without displaying images from the rear camera.
- Display Mode is used for displaying images from the rear camera.
SRM modes are activated using a switch at the bottom of the mirror.
FRONT VIEW MONITOR (FVM) 1.6 GT Premium, 2.0GT-S, 2.0 STI Sport
The FVM helps prevent collisions at intersections, or when parking close to walls or other objects. Images from a camera mounted at the front of the vehicle can be shown on the Multi- Function Display, to check for approaching vehicles, or pedestrians, at intersections with poor visibility; or other scenarios.
It helps the driver check for blind spots in front of the car, which can help avoid accidents occurring at intersections.
The Bilstein front and rear suspension in Levorg 1.6 GT Premium, 2.0 GT-S and 2.0 STI Sport is enhanced from the superseded model year for smoother ride comfort, while retaining sporty capabilities. Both the front and rear suspension configurations are changed for better flat ride comfort with minimal pitching.
The changes help absorb even the smallest bumps and subtle changes in the road surface, for superior ride comfort.

AUTO VEHICLE HOLD (AVH)
Another debut feature for Subaru, AVH alleviates driver fatigue by holding the vehicle in position, even when releasing the brake pedal when stopped. This means drivers no longer have to keep their foot on the brake pedal in situations like traffic congestion, traffic lights or when stopped on hills.
Instead, Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) takes over, maintaining brake fluid pressure to keep the car in position.
STEERING RESPONSIVE HEADLIGHTS
Every Levorg now features, Steering Responsive Headlights, which operate with both high and low beam. The headlight beams move to match steering input when turning corners, or at intersections - improving night-time visibility. Headlight angle is calculated from steering angle and vehicle speed.
Newly developed brake pads in Levorg 2.0-litre variants are used with a high friction coefficient material. This material improves brake efficiency by approximately 20 per cent compared to the superseded pads - giving drivers control of immense braking power with minimal effort, to help improve braking performance.
LOAD CARRYING CONVENIENCE
A significant number of Levorg customers lead active lifestyles that involve skiing, surfing and other outdoor activities, so a greater number of seat configuration options are added to enhance rear seat and cargo space usability. Levorg is Subaru’s first model with a 40/20/40 split-fold rear seat. The new layout is particularly suited to loading long items. Even with two passengers seated in the rear, the centre seat can be folded, enabling equipment such as skis to be positioned from the cargo space.
With three passengers and sizable cargo, the rear seat passenger can sit on either side of the car. As an additional safety measure, the Levorg is also the first Subaru to use oil dampers within the seats, limiting the speed at which seats fold, to prevent users from trapping their fingers.
The reclining function and one-touch folding function are retained too. The centre seat is designed so there is no step to the cargo space when folded down.
MULTI-FUNCTION DISPLAY (MFD)
The larger 5.9-inch MFD located in the centre dashboard offers a wide variety of information including:

Major changes to Subaru’s performance twins, the All-Wheel Drive turbocharged WRX and WRX STI, are set to add more white-hot thrills for drivers of the brand’s long-established pocket rockets.
Mechanical and cosmetic changes will drive the owner experience to a new adrenaline-charged level as the “Rex” pair add to their rally-backed reputation.
Driving performance, the features list and quality are all big winners in Subaru’s heavily revised Model Year 2018 line-up, which despite all the extra kit, still has a starting price of $39,240 Manufacturer’s List Price (MLP)* for WRX manual.
WRX and WRX STI share multiple external and cabin changes to produce even more sporty presence, including a revised nose with more aggressive grille design.
Even greater attention to interior quality adds to the air of exclusivity, while introduction of EyeSight® Driver Assist in WRX automatic transmission variants, extends Subaru’s dominance in bringing the potentially accident-avoiding technology to the masses.

Newly designed LED headlights for a sharper look
- Steering Responsive LED headlights, in both high and low beam modes. The use of a single light point in the headlights gives the front a sharper, more intense appearance.
- Indicator lights are moved inside the headlights, simplifying the fog light bezels, with the updated shape making the opening look larger. This produces a lower looking stance similar to a race car.

The front bumper is revamped with a design that evokes a more powerful, precise driving style. A border around the lower grille is blacked out with a spun-dyed geometric texture and the opening enlarged.

The hexagonal grille is changed and the frame painted black, producing a sharper, well-defined shape. A line running from both sides of the Subaru Constellation six-star emblem is added, with the horizontal theme flowing through to the headlights, highlighting the distinctive Subaru design.
The upgraded interiors on both WRX and WRX STI produce a sportier, prestigious feel. The cabin design adds to driving excitement and makes the cars even more enjoyable to own, with a black colour scheme that creates a sportier mood.

XV’s X-Mode feature makes it easier for drivers to safely navigate bad roads, slippery surfaces and steep hills, with just one switch. X-Mode’s status is indicated visually on the Multi-Function Display (MFD) screen. When X-Mode is engaged, at 40 km/h or less, status information is displayed on the MFD and instrument cluster, including Hill Descent Control and Vehicle Dynamics Control.
X-Mode centralizes control of the engine, All-Wheel Drive, brakes and other critical components to help ensure safe driving even on poor surfaces. Hill Descent Control helps maintain a constant speed when the vehicle is travelling down hill.
Key X-Mode Controls:
At 40 km/h or less:
- Engine Control Unit (ECU) – in low load range, the throttle opens slowly to avoid sudden torque changes and improves drivability
- Traction Control Unit (TCU) – AWD clutch pressure is increased by around 25 per cent, controlling differential rotation between front and rear wheels, improving traction
- Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) – Enhances Limited Slip Differential (LSD) Control. To improve traction on slippery road surfaces, it counteracts differential rotation between left and right wheels by accelerating brake boosting speed and delaying reduction of brake pressure when wheel rotation returns to normal.
At 20 km/h or less:
- VDC also uses Hill Descent Control (HDC) to control brakes on steep hills, so vehicle speed can be maintained when neither accelerator or brake pedals are pressed. It improves safety by allowing the driver to focus on steering without operating the brakes. HDC is automatically activated if speed is increasing on a descent, resulting in constant speed. Control is based on speed data, not hill angle. Therefore a constant speed can be maintained when the vehicle begins a descent from the flat. HDC brake control allows the driver to focus on safe steering while leaving braking to the vehicle.
Two new cars have entered the Australasian market this week with 5 star ANCAP safety ratings - the Subaru XV and Holden Astra sedan.
“The Astra sedan and XV offer high levels of protection to occupants across a variety of crash scenarios including frontal, side and rear-end crashes,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, James Goodwin. The Subaru XV achieved a ‘Good’ pedestrian protection rating and a ‘Good’ rating for whiplash protection. The 5 star ANCAP safety rating applies to all variants.
“Autonomous emergency braking, which can assist the driver by braking automatically in a critical situation, is offered as standard on the three higher XV variants however it is not available on the base variant.”
The pedestrian protection rating for the Astra sedan was ‘Acceptable’ and its whiplash rating was ‘Good’. Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) is not available on the Astra sedan.
“It is disappointing autonomous emergency braking is not available across the board on two new models and we continue to encourage consumers to ask for, and brands to offer, this potentially life-saving technology,” said Goodwin. “As our requirements become more stringent next year, it will not be possible for new models to achieve a 5 star ANCAP safety rating without an effective AEB system fitted as standard.”
Subaru’s new generation All-Wheel Drive XV* Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) has debuted in Geneva, showing off a sporty new style, advanced infotainment and technology that takes its crossover credentials to new heights. Underpinned by the same Subaru Global Platform (SGP) that has won acclaim in new Impreza, XV adds SUV ability with the introduction of X-MODE, to enhance rough road capability.
Subaru’s award-winning EyeSight® Driver Assist system also debuts on XV together with Rear Vehicle Detection, which offers blind spot detection, lane change assistance and reversing assistance, enhancing all-round preventive safety.

DRIVING PERFORMANCE TO ACHIEVE ENHANCED DYNAMIC FEEL AND EXCELLENT ROUGH ROAD CAPABILITY
New XV incorporates multiple improvements to achieve enhanced dynamic feel for the driver. Based on thorough and precise analysis of steering and pedal feedback, vehicle behaviour, vibration and noise - and other elements that drivers sense – XV achieves dynamic quality beyond its class. Rough road capability is also enhanced.
BODY AND CHASSIS
The new platform dramatically increases rigidity throughout the body and chassis (a 70 per cent to 100 per cent increase over present XV) and incorporates substantial improvements to the suspension system, while achieving a lower centre of gravity and highly responsive steering. Eradication of unnecessary handling movement offers superior straight-line stability and cornering performance, gripping the road surface while maintaining 220mm of ground clearance.
Optimised frame structure and stronger joints between parts allow the new platform to improve overall torsional rigidity by 70 per cent. This distributes resonance and distortion throughout the body, greatly reducing vibrations from the steering wheel, floor, and seats - achieving superior noise suppression.
The new platform increases suspension mounting rigidity, improving absorption without warping the body, and providing a smooth and comfortable drive. By mounting the rear stabilizer directly to the body, the new platform reduces body roll by 50 per cent. Steering gear ratio is modified from 14:1 to 13:1, offering superior drivability.
Active Torque Vectoring enhances turning and steering performance. An electronic parking brake is added for more convenience.
In addition to Subaru’s unique Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system, new XV is equipped with X-MODE, capable of enhancing driving performance on poor roads through optimized integrated control of engine, AWD, braking, and other functions on slippery surfaces. The majority of parts on XV’s FB 2.0-litre direct-injection Boxer engine are completely revamped, making it lighter - delivering more power and fuel efficiency. The improved Lineartronic™ Continuously Variable Transmission greatly enhances ratio coverage and weight, boosting acceleration performance and economy. As well as employing full auto-step shift control, XV features a seven-speed manual mode function, allowing the driver to accelerate as desired.
Noise and vibration are greatly reduced in both the engine and transmission, for more pleasant driving and dynamic feel.
Subaru safety performance is highly rated by third-party organizations and new XV adopts technologies to further enhance safety, including the new platform and advanced preventive systems.
The new platform achieves a centre of gravity 5 mm lower than current XV. Together with major improvements in rigidity and evolution of the suspension system, the lower centre of gravity offers outstanding hazard avoidance capabilities on a level with a high-performance sports car.
Thanks to a frame structure that enables more efficient energy absorption in the event of collision - and the enhanced body strength resulting from the increased use of high-tensile steel plates including materials formed by the hot press method - impact energy absorption is improved by 40 per cent.
EyeSight, Subaru’s innovative and highly acclaimed driver assist technology, delivers extremely reliable preventive safety and reduces driver burdens through features such as Pre-Collision Braking Control, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Lane Keep Assist.
The new High Beam Assist uses a monocular camera, automatically switching from high to low beam according to what is happening ahead of the vehicle. Steering Responsive Headlights move the beam right or left when turning, illuminating the direction of travel. XV employs the two headlight controls for the first time, dramatically improving night-time visibility and the recognition capabilities of EyeSight.
Subaru Rear Vehicle Detection is newly employed, offering blind spot detection, lane change assistance and reversing assistance to enhance all-round preventive safety.
