Just a few months after the launch of the radical saloon, PEUGEOT have unveiled the Touring (SW) version of New PEUGEOT 508. A profound change.

New PEUGEOT 508 SW rewrites all the design cues in the highly competitive segment D estate car market; it draws its inspiration from the world of the shooting break.

New PEUGEOT 508 SW's design is incisive with its low-lying sporty bodyline. It forms the perfect balance between sporty elegance and practicality, providing plenty of passenger space and a large, easy-access boot. It features the latest generation PEUGEOT i-Cockpit® and, with its small turning radius, it will perform well wherever you please - from urban city streets to the open highway.

Embedded in the brand's DNA, New PEUGEOT 508 SW's running gear excellence combines remarkable road handing and perfect body movement control. The vehicle, designed to produce top-of-the-range performance, safety and comfort, promises to provide powerful sensations.

A segment dominated by estate cars 
Segment D represents of market of 1.400, 000 vehicles in Europe. For the last ten years, estate cars have made up the majority of this segment, despite the constant increase in new market offerings and body-lines, notably SUVs. In Europe, one vehicle out of every three sold in segment D is an estate car.
This segment includes traditional large-capacity estate cars, most of which are from the mainstream car manufacturers and a premium offering that combines the practicality of an estate car with a much more vibrant design.

The PEUGEOT choice is clear and unambiguous: to create an object of desire, to break with conventional design cues and to adopt a muscular, modern body shape that to date has been the reserve of premium car manufacturers.

As for PEUGEOT 504, created fifty years ago, the Brand has always designed estate cars based on saloon car body lines. Consequently, New PEUGEOT 508 SW enjoys all the styling traits of the saloon's radical design. Its new proportions give it an extremely dynamic body shape

Thanks to the functional roof bars, styled to match the design, the vehicle is almost as low as the saloon - just 1.42 m. This is almost 6 cm less than the previous generation, which makes for optimum aerodynamics whilst ensuring enough headroom in the rear to meet the segment standards.

It is 4.78 m long (only 3 cm more than the saloon version and 5 cm less than the outgoing generation); New PEUGEOT 508 SW reveals smooth, flowing lines, topped by a sleek, low roof.

Frameless doors, a unique estate car feature for a mainstream car manufacturers, hone and enhance the body line whilst permitting a lower glazed surface area. Gaps and flush fittings have been reduced in size with first-class know-how, the wheels have been adjusted to perfectly fill the wheel arches, the roof antenna has been removed (now silk-screened). The body line is both powerful and is redolent of the high end of the market.

Just as for the saloon, the front end is incredibly impressive. With Full LED headlights and the vertical visual signature of the opalescent LED daytime running lights, New PEUGEOT 508 SW projects a distinct, exclusive identity, highlighted by the famous lion centred on the radiator grill and the 508 logo on the nose of the bonnet.

From the rear, the feel is of power and modernity, with the glossy black horizontal strip framed by three-dimensional Full LED rear lights taken from the saloon, which are illuminated throughout the night and day by adaptive intensity, making the coloured claws constantly visible from the side or full rear view. The chrome twin exhaust tailpipe seats the vehicle and further enhances the sporty design.

Boot access is via a practical tailgate (that can be powered and hands-free). The boot sill is low and wide (6 cm lower than the saloon and only 63.5 cm from the ground, 2.4 cm wider). The quick-draw baggage cover provides an immediate view of the entire boot, which has a capacity (with luggage cover closed) of 530 litres. It is designed to be simple in shape and entirely usable. The boot under-baggage cover capacity is very close to that of the outgoing vehicle (560 litres).

Apart from its practical nature, the boot entry has been enhanced by a stainless steel boot sill to facilitate loading. The GT spec level features aluminium floor rails and a backstop net for efficient boot compartmentalisation.

Modularity is essential for an estate car and New PEUGEOT 508 SW is fitted with a 2/3-1/3 rear bench seat with a Magic Flat function. With this system, the two sides of the bench can be instantly folded back by means of two controls located on either side of the boot. This results in a virtually flat boot floor providing a total load space of 1780 litres.

An incomparable cabin enhanced by the PEUGEOT i-Cockpit® 
Just like the new Peugeot 508 saloon, the SW version is fitted with the latest generation PEUGEOT i-Cockpit®.

The attention to detail, the flush fitting accuracy and the choice of materials immediately place the New Peugeot 508 SW driver's position in a desirable, high-tech world imbued with elegance.

The essential components are:

  • a full-grain leather compact steering wheel (perforated on GT Line and GT) ,
  • an automatic transmission with flick-shift control integrated in a central console which also contains countless storage areas,
  • extensive decoration on the dashboard, central console and the door panels, which, depending on the spec level, are covered in a carbon- or a natural wood-like finish (Grey oak on  GT Line/GT and Zebrano on GT only),
  • satin chrome on the steering wheel, the door panels, the air vents, and also on the seven toggle switches and the central touch screen surround,
  • flocked fabric covering on the inside of the passenger storage pockets (all levels) and storage bins in the front door panels (GT Line and GT).

Great care went into the positioning and size of the different storage solutions. It is therefore possible to stow two 1.5 l bottles in the cooled glove-box, a 1 l bottle in each door storage bin and two 0.5 l bottles in the central storage area under the arm-rest (in addition to the cup holders). Thanks to clever cable-tray positioning, the extensive area next to the EAT8 gear stick provides enough space for the largest of smartphones (if they are not being induction-charged in the under-console recess).
The front passengers can sink into ergonomic, wrap-around seats (with the AGR label) and enjoy the five multipoint massage programmes. There is a wide range of rich and sophisticated trim and upholstery materials, such as Alcantara® or full-grain Nappa leather. The latter is offered in two colours - black or dark red (referred to as Sellier).

Rear passengers can benefit from the extra comfort of a seatback that tilts to 27°. There is an extra 4 cm of headroom compared to the saloon and passengers can also enjoy the panoramic clear-glass sun-roof.

Access to the rear bench seat is wide and easy thanks to the frameless rear doors incorporating the quarter-lights.

As for all the passenger compartment lighting, the individual reading lights embedded in the roof panel are LED touch-operated lights.

The top of the range hi-fi system was designed by FOCAL®, the major French signature brand. With 10 loud-speakers fitted with exclusive FOCAL® technology, this system provides pure, fine sound that is perfectly distributed throughout the vehicle. The tweeters are finished with brushed metal grills located on the four doors.
New PEUGEOT 508 SW's interior confirms the perception of quality and excellence projected by the vehicle exterior. This standard of excellence is also evident in the car’s many comfort and safety features.

Tip-top safety thanks to an impressive array of driving aid technology 
New PEUGEOT 508 SW offers a wide range of latest-generation driving aids that notably meet EuroNCAP criteria, which are ever more demanding. The new features compared to the rest of the PEUGEOT range are:

  • a Night Vision system, a first for the segment. The system utilises an infra-red camera to detect living beings in front of the vehicle at night time or in low-visibility conditions. The system ensures detection up to a 200 m range, beyond the headlights’ scope, with central display of the infra-red vision in the digital head-up display unit, in the driver's field of vision to maximise safety.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go function (with the EAT8 automatic gearbox) with an adjustable inter-vehicle distance instruction. When in lane, vehicle restarting is automatic following a stop of more than 3 seconds. Otherwise, the function is re-initiated by depressing the accelerator pedal or on the end of the steering wheel control. The function is available from 0 km/h,
  • Lane Keeping Assist, with the choice of lane positioning made by the driver (associated with ACC Stop & Go),
  • Full Park Assist with the Flankguard perimeter feature (only with EAT8 automatic gearbox). The system automatically manages the direction, acceleration and braking to enter and leave a parking space,
  • Full LED headlights with EVS (static cornering lighting),
  • Permanent ARS (adaptive rear light system).

In addition to all these new features, New PEUGEOT 508 SW is endowed with many other driving aids:

  • The latest Active Safety Brake system (detects pedestrians and cyclists by day and by night from 5km/h up to 140 km/h) and warns of a collision risk,
  • Active Lane Keeping Assist (including roadsides) with course correction as from 65 km/h,
  • Driver Attention alert, to detect the driver's attention during protracted periods of driving and at speeds above 65 km/h based on analysis of steering wheel micro-movements,
  • Automatic High Beam assist,
  • Speed limit recognition and recommendation,
  • Extended traffic sign recognition (Stop, prohibited direction),
  • Active Blind Spot Monitoring System (with course correction).This function is available from 12km/h.

Connected equipment possibilities on board New PEUGEOT 508 SW is just as impressive:

  • 3D connected navigation with TomTom® Traffic,
  • Mirror Screen, compatible with Mirrorlink®, Android Auto™ and Apple Carplay™ protocols enables voice recognition via the smartphone,

A unique, instinctive driving experience 
At PEUGEOT, driving sensations are an integral part of the Brand's DNA. As a true technology standard-bearer, New PEUGEOT 508 SW bears the fruit of top PSA Group engineering expertise:

  • Use of the EMP2 platform - reduction in weight (an average of 70 kg less than the outgoing generation) to the benefit of fuel consumption, passive safety and performance,
  • Introduction of a new body welding technique strengthened by the use of 24 m of structural adhesive providing greater rigidity and a guarantee of better durability,
  • Installation of a damped engine mount, for optimal suspension damping (according to version),
  • Adaptation of a multi-link rear axle linked to variable damping controlled suspension - Active Suspension Control - as standard on the GT,
  • Widespread introduction of the new eight-speed EAT8 automatic transmission, associated with an electric gear lever and one-touch control.

So we applied the same technical package - wheelbase, damped engine mount, multi-link rear axle and electronically controlled damping, depending on the model. We then proceeded to make specific adjustments to compensate for the difference in mass breakdown in the SW. The result is the same as for the saloon - a perfect balance between sportiness, comfort and safety."

In every area from vehicle architecture, space breakdown, carefully controlled dimensions, weight reduction, aerodynamics to the power trains, no effort has been spared to deliver intense driving sensations and to achieve best-in-class CO2 emissions values.

New PEUGEOT 508 SW enjoys the new generation PureTech and BlueHDi engines (with extended SCR technology) as presented on the saloon.
There are two new petrol options developed on the basis of the PureTech 1.6L engine:

  • PureTech 180 S&S EAT8,
  • PureTech 225 S&S EAT8.

Four Diesel options are available based on the BlueHDi 1.5L and 2.0L engines:

  • BlueHDi 130 S&S BVM6,
  • BlueHDi 130 S&S EAT8,
  • BlueHDi 160 S&S EAT8,
  • BlueHDi 180 S&S EAT8.

All these engines have already been certified to Euro6.d temp standards, in anticipation of the Euro 6 provisions applicable from January 2020, specifically with regard to nitrogen oxide emissions. The CO2 values are Best in Class; they take into account new technical provisions of the WLTP procedure, which seeks to harmonise test-approved consumption levels and customer-usage consumption levels.

In ECO mode, the Pure Tech engine family mated with the EAT8 automatic gearbox switches automatically to freewheeling mode. This function is available from 25 to 130 km/h, when conditions permit. It is triggered if no a foot-on-pedal signal is detected; it is totally transparent for the driver. It eases internal friction in the gearbox and reduces fuel consumption by around 3 per cent.

In the second half of 2019, the range will be supplemented by an efficient Plug-in Hybrid petrol powertrain with an extended ZEV range of 50 km (WLTP cycle). The batteries will be located under the row 2 seats to preserve the roomy boot.

Like the saloon, New PEUGEOT 508 SW will be manufactured at the Mulhouse plant and as from launch will bear the "Origine France Garantie" certifying that it is made in France.

It will be unveiled at the next Paris Motor Show and will be available in Europe from January 2019 and internationally in the second half of the year.

Additional exterior options for an individual look

The updated BMW 3 Series range receives a vibrant new metallic paint option, known as Sunset Orange. As before, Sport Line is standard on BMW 318i, 320i, 330i and 330e. A new, 18-inch double-spoke light alloy wheel finished in Jet Black accents is available as a no-cost option for Sport Line-equipped models.

Opting for the M Sport Package also opens up a new cost-option 19-inch bi-colour light alloy wheel, with Orbit Grey the prominent colour. Based on Australian customer feedback, the BMW 340i is now fitted with responsive fixed-ratio power steering in line with the rest of the range. Variable Sports Steering – previously fitted as standard to the BMW 340i – remains as an option for those seeking an adaptive system.

Those opting for the 340i can choose between Luxury Line or the M Sport Package at no extra cost. Both Luxury Line and M Sport Packages are optionally available across the rest of the range, with Luxury Line at no-cost for 330i and 330e variants.

Latest infotainment system showcases driver-focused interior geometry

Following on from the BMW 4 Series LCI, the BMW 3 Series range is now updated with the latest iDrive6 infotainment system. This system is integrated into the 6.5-inch colour display of Navigation System Business (standard to 318i, 320i and 320d) or the 8.8-inch colour touchscreen on vehicles fitted with the Navigation System Professional.

The iDrive6 operating system uses a customisable screen that offers intuitive app-style live ‘tile’ displays that can be reordered by the user, via the traditional iDrive controller, by natural voice recognition or by touching the screen on models equipped with Professional Navigation.

For added peace of mind, BMW’s latest Speed Limit Info system is also fitted as standard.

Also new is the multi-functional instrument display, which is optionally available on 3 Series Sedan and Touring variants. This system adapts the display to the chosen driving mode, providing key information to the driver whether in Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport or Sport+. Inside the 3 Series, the cabin has been redesigned with a driver-focused geometry, while elegant double-stitching for the instrument panel creates further interior ambience.

Additionally, a new Cognac Dakota leather upholstery has been added as an option across the range. A dark Aluminium Carbon trim package with Pearl Chrome finishers is now exclusively available for vehicles equipped with the M Sport Package.

Innovations package further advances technology

Available across both 3 Series Sedan and Touring ranges, the Innovations Package blends key additional technologies into one value-added option package. These are tailored to the model grade as below. The BMW 318i Innovations Package adds the Navigation System Professional as well as Parking Assistant, Extended Smartphone Connectivity and the new multi-functional instrument display.

Opting for the BMW 320i or 320d (in Sedan or Touring form) brings the above refinements as well as Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function.

The 330i gains Parking Assistant, Extended Smartphone Connectivity, multi-functional instrument display and Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, while the 330e mimics the 330i barring the multi-function display, instead using a specific instrument set that integrates with the 330e’s iPerformance eDrive system.

Condition Based Servicing

All maintenance requirements for the BMW 3 Series range is controlled by the Condition Based Servicing (CBS) system.

With CBS, sensors and advanced algorithms monitor and calculate the conditions in which a vehicle is used, including mileage, time elapsed since its last service, fuel consumption and how a vehicle is driven. Based on the information captured, maintenance requirements are determined, identifying whether an annual vehicle inspection or oil service is due.

Selected BMW service and maintenance costs can be covered by a single, one-off advance payment with BMW Service Inclusive (BSI), which is available in two packages: Basic or Plus.

Additional flexibility, individual style

Complementing the technologically-advanced all-new BMW 5 Series sedan range, the latest generation BMW 5 Series Touring variants combine all the innovations of the sedan with additional flexibility and storage capability, wrapped in a compellingly unique body style.

The 5 Series Touring range features an automatic tailgate function, with a twist: For additional loading flexibility, the rear windscreen can also open, while the rear luggage cover automatically retracts and returns to place upon closing.

For further convenience, contactless tailgate opening is also possible by sweeping a foot under the car’s rear bumper.

In addition to the already high level of standard equipment, Touring models gain further bespoke details. Roller sunblinds for the rear side windows and Silver Matte roof rails feature, as well as the specialised Luggage Compartment Package.

Comprising two sliding rails and four mounted fastening points, securing luggage has never been safer or easier. In addition the rear seat backs can be remotely folded, thanks to a tailgate-mounted button.

The Luggage Compartment package builds on the already-generous 570L luggage space (up 10L on the predecessor model), which expands to 1,700L with the rear seats folded flat via a 40:20:40 split. In addition a through-loading system built into the centre rear seat backrest allows storage of long items such as skis, while still accommodating two rear seat passengers.

Further increasing individuality, there are a total of 13 exterior paint options (two non-metallic, 11 metallic) offered across the BMW 5 Series Touring range. The Steering and Lane Control assistant is functional from 0-210km/h, offering occupants the ability to drive hands free for periods up to 30 seconds. A further function debuting in the 5 Series is Speed Limit Assist, which incorporates speed restrictions into the Active Cruise Control or the driver-selectable Speed Limiter function.

The Active Cruise Control system – with innovative Stop & Go function that brakes and accelerates according to traffic flow including traffic jams, retaining the cruise function – forms part of the range-wide standard Driving Assistant Plus package and can accelerate the vehicle as well as bring it to a complete stop without driver intervention.

Front cross-traffic warning, lane keeping assistant, evasion aid and cross-roads warning form additional systems within this package.

Parking Assistant Plus offers Active Park Distance Control to the rear, with Surround View and Panorama View offering expansive virtual imaging of the vehicle’s surroundings. A full suite of stability control systems are standard, including dynamic stability control, anti-lock braking with brake assist, cornering brake control and dynamic traction control.

Airbags are installed for driver and front passenger, as well as full-length side airbags and a driver’s knee airbag. Additional side and headliner bags provide further head protection in the event of an accident.

The latest in connectivity

Debuting BMW’s iDrive 6 infotainment system, the new 5 Series is the most connected BMW ever.

System interaction can be conducted via the impressive 10.25-inch colour touchscreen, the traditional iDrive circular controller (which also features a sensitive touchpad to ‘handwrite’ commands) and console-mounted buttons, or via a new voice control system that uses natural language recognition software for a new level of understanding. BMW’s futuristic Gesture Control, which debuted in the 2015 BMW 7 Series, is also optionally available in the 5 Series.

The central screen displays information in an app-style format, with information ‘tiles’ that can be reordered simply by swiping the touch screen to suit the user.

Wireless phone charging, and the world-first ability to wirelessly connect to (optional) Apple Car Play offer further third-party connectivity options and the extended Bluetooth system can connect to two separate smartphones simultaneously.

In addition to the new Head-Up Display, the dashboard now features a 12.3-inch Multi-Function Screen (530i Touring; optional on 520d) that adapts to the selected drive mode. Eco Pro, for example, offers blue-lit displays that focus on efficient driving, while Sport engages red dials and a focus on revs and speed.

A full array of BMW ConnectedDrive services is fitted across the range, with access to BMW Online and BMW Apps for seamless third-party app integration (for example, Spotify). The service also includes advanced real-time traffic information, intelligent emergency call, TeleServices, Concierge Services and phone app-based Remote Services.

Remote Services is particularly powerful, allowing the user to control key aspects of the vehicle while in a different location. Through the BMW Connected App, one can pre-condition the vehicle’s cabin, lock or unlock the doors and flash the headlights. A Find Car function is also possible, meaning you’ll never be stranded in a crowded car park again.

Journey management is another highlight of the BMW Connected app, enabling sending of destinations directly to the 5 Series’ navigation system as well as integrating with your calendar and providing ‘Time to Leave’ notifications, ensuring you will make your next engagement on time.

The advanced Remote 3D View, which uses the vehicle’s surround-view cameras to show BMW Connected App users the car on a smartphone, will be rolled out shortly for Australian 5 Series Touring variants.

Further advanced connectivity is realised when the BMW 5 Series is optioned with the Display Key. This device – which debuted with the 7 Series in 2015 – now takes things a step further by allowing access to BMW’s Remote Parking functionality, a system that allows the driver to stand outside the vehicle while the car does the parking; particularly useful when navigating tight spaces.

Key option packages

Available on either variant, the Innovations Package adds the BMW Display Key, Remote Control Parking and Gesture Control for $1,600*. For the 520d, the Comfort Package ($2,700* with Luxury Line, $2,100* with M Sport) brings Dynamic Damper Control, High Beam Assist, Lumbar Support for driver and front passenger, and front-row seat heating.

A $6,400* Exclusive Package for 520d Luxury Line offers 19-inch light-alloy wheels in a choice of two styles, Nappa leather upholstery, Dynamic Damper Control, High-beam Assist and heated Comfort seats for the driver and front passenger.

Finally, the $3,400* Precision Package adds the 16-speaker harman/kardon surround sound system, Adaptive LED Headlights, Multi-Function Instrument Display and High-Beam Assist.

Condition Based Servicing

All maintenance requirements for the BMW 5 Series Touring are controlled by the Condition Based Servicing (CBS) system.

With CBS, sensors and advanced algorithms monitor and calculate the conditions in which a vehicle is used, including mileage, time elapsed since its last service, fuel consumption and how a vehicle is driven. Based on the information captured, maintenance requirements are determined, identifying whether an annual vehicle inspection or oil service is due.

Selected BMW service and maintenance costs can be covered by a single, one-off advance payment with BMW Service Inclusive (BSI), which is available in two packages: Basic or Plus.

The new BMW 5 Series Touring celebrates its world premiere in March 2017 at the Geneva International Motor Show. Four engines from the BMW Group’s latest generation of power units will be available to order when sales begin in June 2017, while the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system will be fitted in two models from day one. Additional variants with both classical rear- wheel drive and all-wheel drive will join the line-up over the course of the year.

Weight reduced, agility enhanced, efficiency optimised

The sporty driving characteristics of the new BMW 5 Series Touring are the product of new chassis technology and a commitment to reducing weight. Rear air suspension with automatic self-levelling is part of standard specification. Included on the options list, meanwhile, are Dynamic Damper Control, the Adaptive Drive system with active roll stabilisation, Integral Active Steering (now available in conjunction with xDrive) and M Sport suspension with a ten-millimetre drop in ride height.

The suspension side members and tailgate are now made from aluminium, which is also employed alongside high-strength steels in many other chassis components and the extremely torsionally-stiff body. This use of materials, together with the efficient drive-system technology already mentioned and optimised aerodynamics, results in fuel consumption and emissions 11 per cent lower than the figures recorded by the new 5 Series Touring’s predecessor.

Athletic design for a versatile sports machine

With surface contouring that creates a clearly defined athletic build and dynamically stretched lines, the exterior design of the new BMW 5 Series Touring clearly expresses the blend of sportiness and versatility for which this model is renowned. Precise contours mark out the front end of the new Touring, and the standard LED headlights extend up to the forward-surging BMW kidney grille. The flanks, meanwhile, combine the car’s distinctive geometry with harmonious proportions. Another contributor to the sporting aura exuded by the new BMW 5 Series Touring is its long roofline, flowing into heavily raked D-pillars. The rear window is framed by a roof spoiler with integrated auxiliary brake light and air deflectors at the sides. Lower down, a series of prominent horizontal lines and the L-shaped rear lights reaching deep into the car’s flanks accentuate the body’s width.

Improved spaciousness and intelligent functionality

Inside the new BMW 5 Series Touring, a driver-focused cockpit design shares the stage with the premium ambience generated by a combination of contemporary elegance, precisely finished high-quality materials and a devotion to detail. The instrument panel rises up less prominently than in the outgoing 5 Series Touring, helping to create a generous feeling of space. The Control Display now comes in freestanding, flatscreen form. All seats benefit from appreciably greater head-, shoulder- and legroom, while optimised backrest contours, longer seat surfaces and extended kneeroom elevate comfort for the rear passengers. Further upgrades to the soundproofing provided by the windscreen, headliner and load compartment raise the acoustic comfort on board the new BMW 5 Series Touring to sedan levels.

The increase in interior width allows up to three child seats to be fixed securely and comfortably across the rear

The boot capacity of the new BMW 5 Series Touring has grown to 570 – 1,700 litres and its permissible load by up to 120 kilograms, depending on the model variant (to 720 – 730 kilograms). Similarly impressive is the high degree of functionality rooted in an array of practical details, such as the 40 : 20 : 40 split/folding rear seat backrest, electric remote backrest release (operated by pressing a button in the boot), separately-opening rear window and automatic tailgate operation – which, as an option, allows hands-free opening and closing. The load compartment cover and luggage partition net are now contained in separate cartridges that can be stowed away in matching recesses underneath the load compartment floor.

Driving pleasure, just as you like it: four engines and BMW xDrive available from launch

The engines available to customers from the market launch of the new BMW 5 Series Touring boast BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and combine enhanced performance with reduced fuel consumption and emissions. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine under the bonnet of the new BMW 530i Touring generates maximum output of 185 kW/252 hp and peak torque of 350 Nm (258 lb-ft). The BMW 530i Touring comes as standard with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission and sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.5 seconds. Its combined fuel consumption stands at 6.3 – 5.8 litres per 100 kilometres (44.8 – 48.7 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions are 143 – 133 grams per kilometre.

A 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line petrol engine, eight-speed Steptronic transmission and intelligent all-wheel-drive system team up to whisk the new BMW 540i xDrive Touring down the driver’s road of choice. Output rising to 250 kW/340 hp and peak torque of 450 Nm (332 lb-ft) deliver acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.1 seconds. The BMW 540i xDrive Touring posts combined fuel consumption of 7.7 – 7.3 litres per 100 kilometres (36.7 – 38.7 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 177 – 167 grams per kilometre.

The four-cylinder engine in the new BMW 520d Touring extracts 140 kW/190 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) from its 2.0-litre displacement. This diesel unit teams up as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, but can also be specified with an eight-speed Steptronic transmission as an option. The BMW 520d Touring powers from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.0 seconds (automatic: 7.8 seconds), but the exceptional efficiency of its engine also allows it to record combined fuel consumption of 4.9 – 4.5 litres (4.7 – 4.3 litres) per 100 kilometres / 57.6 – 62.8 mpg imp (60.1 – 65.7 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 129 – 119 grams (124 – 114 grams) per kilometre.

Rounding off the line-up of engines available from launch is a 3.0-litre straight- six diesel unit producing maximum output of 195 kW/265 hp and peak torque of 620 Nm (457 lb-ft). This engine can send its power through either the rear wheels or xDrive all-wheel drive, and links up with the eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The BMW 530d Touring completes the dash from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.8 seconds, the BMW 530d xDrive Touring in 5.6 seconds. Combined fuel consumption is 5.1 – 4.7 l/100 km (55.4 – 60.1 mpg imp) / 5.7 – 5.3 l/100 km (49.6 – 53.3 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions come in at 134 –124 or 149 –139 grams per kilometre.

Operating system: extremely intuitive, more versatile than ever

The high-resolution, up to 10.25-inch Control Display used by the iDrive operating system comes in touchscreen form in the new BMW 5 Series Touring. As before, the vehicle, navigation, communication and infotainment functions can also be operated using the Touch Controller, should the driver prefer. The new tile-look menu display helps ensure intuitive usability and minimal distraction from what is happening on the road. Lending additional variety to the options available for operating the car’s functions are the further developed voice command technology and the gesture control system now also available in the BMW 5 Series. With its 70 per cent larger projection surface, the latest-generation BMW Head-Up Display represents another step forward for the car’s display and operating concept.

Ongoing progress towards automated driving

The new BMW 5 Series Touring is the latest model to point the way to automated driving with the help of new assistance systems and extended functionality. Contributing to the relentless progress in this area are Crossing traffic warning and Priority warning, Lane Change Assistant and Lane keeping assistant with active side collision protection, and the evasion aid. The new systems provide steering and lane control assistance from walking speed up to 210 km/h (130 mph), ensuring additional comfort and offering a helping hand in challenging driving situations. With the Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function activated, the driver can now factor in speed restrictions detected by the Speed Limit Info system by simply pressing a button.

Personal mobility assistant and intelligent parking space searches

The new BMW 5 Series Touring also features BMW Connected, which provides a seamless bridge between the car and its driver’s smartphone. This technology assists drivers with their personal appointment and mobility planning – both on the road and at their home or workplace. For example, navigation destinations can be sent into the car from the user’s smartphone and the ideal departure time calculated using Real Time Traffic Information. Added to which, Remote 3D View allows users to access images of the area around their car on their smartphone. And users can manage their calendar, e-mail and contact details via Microsoft Exchange. Wireless smartphone integration also enables the use of Apple CarPlay and is complemented by an inductive charging facility.

The new and comprehensive parking systems also enhance comfort. In addition to the Parking Assistant, the new BMW 5 Series Touring is now available with the Remote Control Parking function. Plus, drivers can also take advantage of the ParkNow service enabling online reservation of parking spaces and cashless payment. And the innovative On-Street Parking Information service helps users to find vacant on-street parking spaces.

The fifth-generation model of the BMW 5 Series Touring writes the next chapter in the car’s 25-year success story at the premium end of the executive class. Driving pleasure, aesthetic appeal, innovation and intelligent functionality are the defining characteristics of this 5 Series body variant. New chassis technology and BMW EfficientLightweight help the new model to build on the 5 Series Touring’s segment leadership in terms of dynamic excellence, agility and precision. The weight of each model has been reduced by up to 100 kilograms on average over its equivalent in the outgoing range.

Exterior design – including a dynamically stretched silhouette, an eye- catching front end and a rear-end design accentuating the width of the body – underlines the sporting character of the new BMW 5 Series Touring. Exterior dimensions grow by 36 millimetres to 4,943 millimetres in length, by eight millimetres to 1,868 millimetres in width and by ten millimetres to 1,498 millimetres in height. Wheelbase is 7 millimetres longer, at 2,975 millimetres.

There is significant increase in on-board spaciousness and enhanced premium ambience for the interior, optimised, sedan-level interior acoustics, more head-, shoulder- and legroom in all seats and extra comfort in the rear thanks to new backrest contours, greater seat depth and extended kneeroom. The interior is wide enough to accommodate three child seats in the rear.

Boot capacity is increased to 570 – 1,700 litres, permissible load up by 120 kilograms, to 720 – 730 kilograms. Intelligent variability and exceptional functionality provided by 40 : 20 : 40 split/folding rear seat backrest, electric remote backrest release operated by a button in the boot, stowage compartment for load area cover and partition net underneath the boot floor, separately-opening rear window, automatic tailgate opening/closing as standard (hands-free as an open).
